As part of the Sony commitment to quality, Sony is announcing that it is extending the limited warranty (parts and labor), in the United States, on the optical block of KDS-R50XBR1 and KDS-R60XBR1 model SXRD Televisions until October 31, 2008, regardless of purchase date. This extended warranty does not apply to replaceable projection lamp and other parts that may be used in the televisions. All other terms of the Sony limited warranty continue to apply. Sony utilizes a network of hundreds of qualified independent third-party servicers to perform in-home television warranty service. Sony, through its authorized servicer network, will endeavor to repair your set within 30 days of your first contact. For diagnosis, warranty service, or if you are not provided a repair within 30 days, please contact Sony at 866-850-8674.

In addition, Sony is announcing that for any owner of a KDS-R50XBR1 or KDS-R60XBR1 model television who paid out-of pocket expenses on or before May 1, 2007 for an estimate or repair service to replace the optical block, Sony will reimburse the customer by mail for the cost of the optical block and the labor expense to replace it, subject to certain conditions. To receive reimbursement, please follow completely the directions on the claim form for reimbursement attached HERE; all claims must be postmarked by December 31, 2007. See the claim form for complete terms and conditions.

This is a great news for many xbr1 users that didn't buy EW. Plus, if you have paid any out-of-pocket repair, then Sony will reimburse it you submit the receipt before enf od Dec. 2007.

What EW gives you unlimited bulb replacements?

This sets a great precident for all SXRD owners regardless of model. Sony is willing to stand behind their product and seems to be showing confidence in the quality of their most recent optical blocks.

wow...that is great news. At least my 50XBR1 is now covered by Sony till 10/08 and I still have my 5 yr warranty at PC Richards after that.
Wonder if this will also apply to A2000 (and A2020) which apparently use much the the same OB as the XBR1?
Probably not XBR2 as XBR2 doesn't seem to have an OB problem so far.

It just means that Sony stand behind the product and the potential problems. I would rather deal directly with Sony than go through Best Buy EW. Faster, easier, etc.

Like I mentioned in the other thread, it is great news that Sony is finally stepping up and taking responsibility and earning some of the respect that the Sony name at one time held. My only hope now is that they develop an OB by Oct '08 that resolves these color uniformity problems for good.

Agreed. I don't want to have an OB replaced every 10-12 months ...

I'm curious as to whether they'll still do display replacements...

I agree it's good news, but after my year warranty expired I last week was privy to my first optical block replacement. It was a pink and blue tinted MESS! Now that it's covered by Sony, I'm wondering whether to call them up, tell them that the service center did the repair (through Best Buy...natch), but at the same time I'm not eager to have my TV go through optical blocks like candy.

Does Sony have a lemon policy? That's the only thing that might make me switch from the current Best Buy warranty plan.

Then again, my wife is keen on the part's continual failure so we can downgrade our 50" XBR1 to something more fitting for an extra room (our new TV, bought after the first optical block failure is a Mits WD-57831 DLP...and no, I don't see rainbows ). Best Buy will just give us a credit if we replace the 50" XBR1 with a smaller TV (one of the Bravia's or something else).

From other posts in the XBR1 owners thread, Sony does do replacements, but only after 2 to 3 OB replacements. A few minority have reported having to go through 4 replacements. So I guess it really depends on who you deal with. Now remember, this was all prior to Sony extending the warranty. Now that they have taken this step, there is no telling what the 'process' is.

If your having problems with your picture, why would you not call Sony to have it repaired? You spent money on what you thought was the best picture quality you could afford and now your gonna settle? Dont let Sony get off that easy. IMO, keep calling until you get what you paid for.

I'm thinking of returning my EW (will be prorated for everything but the 1 month I've been on it). The only reason I got it (right before the OEM warranty expired) was insurance "just in case."

My guess would be that they have indeed found a cure, that's why their extending the warranty which is great news for us owners.

I wonder if the class action law suite had anything to do with this

I like the optimism but do you actually have proof?...or are you just trying to stay positive with the rest of us?

I talked to a SONY tech after reading the extended warranty, and he said they believe that SONY found a perm OB solution.

Is there one for XBR2? I think some people still have green tint problem on these. I know I did until I replaced mine for another.

It's great news for all Sony fans!
