The Prestige just made my jaw drop

This movie is so darn good. I was amazed. Go watch the movie with an open mind and with the knowledge that it will start off slow. You will finish the movie realizing that this should have been up for best picture instead of babel (good movie but not as good as this although the departed clearly deserved to win against either of these movies). Also do not read anything about this movie before hand or you will spoil it for yourself.

Anyway, transfer is very solid and consistent. Cinematography and direction is beautiful (directed by chris nolan of batman begins and memento fame). Acting is superb. And sound while restrained sounds great in uncompressed PCM.

Maybe its just me but I think that more people need to be supporting works of art like this movie instead of crap, albeit very sharp and clear crap, like crank....

I couldn't agree more. This was one of my favorites of the year, along with Children of Men, The Fountain, and Pan's Labyrinth.

This really is an excellent transfer - it was the first title we played on the PS3 and made for an excellent introduction to optical HD in our home. I look forward to watching it again when we have an HDMI-capable receiver.

I've now watched my copy of The Prestige three times, and it's still a jaw-dropping movie every time because I'm still picking up little details in the dialogue and in the background scenery.

It's not a terribly "3D" movie, but the transfer is still incredible and really shows the power of Blu-ray's excellent bandwidth when combined with an advanced codec (AVC).

It was a blind buy on my part but the story really floored me....VERY nice ending, better than Sixth Sense IMHO...the box within box of telling the story was really ingenious. I bet ya this was from a book...there's no way a screenwriter hack could think this up

...the film that made me finally pull the trigger on getting a BD player, enough said...

I believe the Nolan brothers were entirely responsible for this movie. Just as with Memento, these guys know how to craft extremely insightful films on human nature, usually focusing on the darker realms of our psyche.

Well actually, I was right...i looked it up...it's from a book...as always, the best ideas come from books

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prestige

is a novel by British writer Christopher Priest. The novel is epistolary in structure; that is, it purports to be a collection of real diaries that were kept by the protagonists and later collated. The title derives from the novel's fictional practice[1] of stage illusions having three parts: The Pledge, The Turn and The Prestige.

Alfred Borden and Rupert (Robbie) Angier rise to become world-renowned stage magicians. Early in their careers, they meet and a bitter feud develops as they constantly try to out-do, and even sabotage, the other's acts. The frame story involves the great-grandchildren of Borden and Angier and their investigations into how their own lives have been affected by their ancestors' conflict. The events of the past are revealed primarily through each of the magicians' diaries.

I loved this movie. Sadly I bought it on DVD before I got my Blu-ray player. The story itself is excellent, and closer to the style of film that I like from Chris Nolan like "Memento" than say "Batman Begins" or "Insomnia".

You didn't watch the special features then, where the author of the book that the movie is based on is interviewed prominently.

The Prestige is absolutely amazing, one of the best movies I've watched in years.

I thought Babel was average at best (rented the DVD copy of the weekend).

A thought provoking movie, but I must say that last 'secret' is enough to make anyone really queasy. To say that it involves a very human dilemna into the question of our individuality is an understatement.

I say it is more disturbing than it is entertaining, but it is definitely not a lightweight movie you can forget easily. I won't say it is a best movie material, but I agree that Babel seems pretentiously over intellectual compared to The Prestige.

Once I found out the secret the movie nose-dived for me. Too easy, too laughable and hardly magic.

I'm waiting for the next great blu-ray sale to pop up so I can buy this. Come on, Best Buy!

same. I just don't want to drop $30 for a lot of these titles. If prices were $19.99 on blu-ray my collection would probably be twice as big.

Umm its not magic ...even one character says so it over and over. Its also a sci-fi movie and I think the quote from Arthur C. Clarke were used:

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

I'm importing this baby. Well worth the extra ducats. My lady and I were extremely impressed by The Prestige, we found it much better than The Illusionist.

I thought I figured it out, but I was a bit off. The ending they came up with was a bit better than I expected. I actually liked the film. This and insomnia are my favorites. FWIW, I met one of the nolan's a few times before they became famous and had friends that knew this guy pretty well and told me how much of an ass he is. So, I came into this film not wanting to like it, but I thought it was pretty good. I'll be buying it on Hd-dvd as an import in a couple months.

Must have missed the deal. Coming up as 24.95 ($26) after shipping. Maybe Fry's or Best Buy will have a buy 1 get 1 free deal again.

Doesn't this hold true for all "magic" tricks?
Why do you think magicians don't reveal how its done? There is no such thing as magic.

No such thing as magic? say it ain't so! The rest of the tricks used slight of hand, mechanical props etc, etc. The secret was something far from any of this and was akin to placing a machine gun in 'Braveheart' in my estimation.

I just didn't like the movie once it took this turn nearly as much as before that lil tid-bit was revealed. It just felt cheap and easy. To each their own.

Half way through the movie I figured out the surprises. It was still a very good movie. I just wish I could have been in the dark about everything until the very end.

If you've watched it already, listen to the dialog, it blatantly tells you everything you need to know. Match that with the imagery and direction, and you'll wonder why you never noticed the surprises the first time you watched it.

yeah i figured out most of the ending way in advanced. It was actually much more entertaining realizing that what i expected to happen was subtely revealing itself to be true. That's why i liked it more than the sixth sense because it doesn't come out of left field and then make you watch it again. In this case you can figure it out halfway through and then revel in the genius of the story and editing.

To me this is what made the movie so great... you were watching one big trick imho. As Micheal Caine said during the movie the people don't see it because they want to believe it is real.

In any other case I'd agree with you that it was too easy however in this case it just seemed to fit so well. The secret to a good trick is the key... once people know how it is done it loses its appeal. Yes it is still shocking and all that but it never really lives up to the anticipation built up while watching the movie.

At least that is my take.

the funny thing is when i first heard about this movie, my friend told me it was about 2 wizards fighting...so i went in with a horrible idea of what the movie was going to be...it turned out to be pretty good..
I don't think the "secrets" were intended to be super tricky to figure out, so I wasn't disappointed when I figured most out. I think the story telling is very good. I've watched it twice, and enjoyed it the second time around as much as the first. The only thing that bugged me is that when the girl drowns, if the tank is supposed to have a "fake" lock she can undo from inside, why didn't the guys just open the lid and pull her out by the hair?

Agreed 100%. My wife and I felt ripped off at the end. I don't see how anyone can feel anything but ripped off, not by the questionably "plausible" situation, but the completely implausible (read: silly).
