Are you stating this from actually viewing titles on D-VHS or from reviews?
D-VHS was high bitrate MPEG-2 on analog tape so there is no reason it should be better than a good BD25 or BD50 using MPEG-2 at a higher rate.
The bar was different then and most D-VHS were reviewed with much smaller screens being the norm, or with front projection systems with much different technology.
Even if the quality is equal, a digital disc versus analog tape has user friendly usefullness in a different league.
FWIW, I never owned a D-VHS player, but I watched a lot of D-VHS clips. To me virtually all HD DVD titles and most Blu-ray I have seen are at least its equal in every way and most are superior to me in their background detail. But it may seem to be that hway to me because I have watched the HD DVD and Blu-ray on much larger screens than I ever watched D-VHS on.
