Tvix M-4100SH and M5100SH

I emailed Dvico about these last night. They confirmed that they should ship end of April. I won't hold my breath, but these are exactly what I have been waiting for.

Looks promising, I just wished they would also put the max bit rate in the specs as well.

Basically DVICO says that it is possible to hook up an HD-DVD or BLU-RAY drive to the USB port however they do not want to answer whether it will be possible to play original media off these drives. They do confirm it will be possible to play VC-1 TS streams from discs...

anybody see these for pre-order anywhere?

Yea, I would pre-order that in a heart beat. This is what I have been waitting for. SATA and H264 codec. Now someone will just need to invent a Terabyte drive to stick in it. Guess 750 will have to do for now.

Well you could order a new Dell XPS machine and rip the Terabyte hard drive out of it and stick it into the Tvix and then plop maybe a 500 or 750 in its place.

Anyone know if this will play .MKV files as i see it can do H.264

its not mentioned in the brochure.. but maybe. I believe there is a limit on the bitrate of the h.264 streams as well.. so this may not be the holy grail machine but it would be getting closer.

Why oh why is this holy grail just sooo hard to find.

The TVIX m4100sh supports H.264/X.264 and HDMI and it will be released
at the end of this April.

aside from h264, holy grail for this would be the a)no limit of four network connections and b)not having to name them TVIXxxxx

Excellent point! At the moment that is THE number one detractor IMO...I already have 5 different drives for video and a 6th on the way. There should not be a limitation on root drives, # of drives, # of folders ect. or share naming.

what's the diffrence between 4100 and 5100? Just the form factor, or are their also technical differences. It's nowhere to be found in the docs...

That better be bull!!!! I have already ripped a bunch of HD disc's in anticipation of a unit like the 4100 and if this can not play them from the hard drive I will be pretty upset!!!! I want to say I will not buy one because of this, but I doubt I could keep myself from buying one as I need one that will take care of my normal DVDs. But I would be on the look out for one that did.

Really I would be so upset if it did not play VC-1 from the Hard Drive or streamed off a NAS. I mean that is the whole point of the unit. To store our media in a format that is easy to access and keep us from damaging your originals. If this device just plays HD-DVDs from a player, why buy this and not just get a HD-DVD player instead? Or why buy the 4100 unit over the 4000?

We buy this product so we can rip our DVDs and store them in one place and have easy and instant access to them and protect them from damage that can happen during normal wear and tear of use and kids trying to play there favorite Disney show by themselves. My Disney DVDs are the most beat up ones I have and if I leave one of my DVDs in the player and the kids come along and pull mine out to put theres in, they do not find the case and put it way nice, they just put it on top of the DVD player!!!!

A huge factor in buying this is to play ripped DVDs and if I can not play my HD-DVDs the same way, it is a waste to me. I already have a HD-DVD player, might as well get the 4000, right?

And those that want a cheap HD-DVD solution. Buy a USB Xbox 360 HD-DVD player and hook it up to your computer. SWEET!!! XP will auto detect and down load the needed drivers. Need CyberLink PowerDVD to play them also. Under $200 bucks delivered. Plus King Kong.

It appears the main differance between the two will be PVR functionality on the 5100. So you can schudule to record your HD TV with the 5100 and the 4100 will only be able to watch live HD with its tuner.

The original post from booyoo says that it will be able to play VC-1 from disks, not from disks ONLY. What is unknown is whether the 4100/5100 will be able to play unripped (ie CSS protected) DVDs from an external DVD or Blu-ray drive. I think the point is that the units will play VC-1 from such a drive, so its a pretty safe assumption that they will play it from the HDD as well.

Didn't a recent firmware upgrade for the 4000 add support for some USB wireless adaptors? If so, the 4100 should have the same feature, since it is being positioned above the 4000 in the product line.
