FYI: "Intro to HA" webinar on 4/8, 8:30-10:30am PST

For those of you who are interested in learning about how to do Home Automation, i've been doing some free webinars about it every few weeks or so. The next one is 4/8, 8:30am-10:30am PST.

One of the biggest things i've learned is that there's 101 different ways to skin the HA cat. I initially tried to writeup a "how-to" guide, but that didn't work out because there were too many different variables. So now I talk about this in "Case Study" format, and discuss how i've done it, and how if you choose the same toolset I do, you can also do it.

Fair warning: I'm not professing to know the worlds best way to do HA - all I'll tell you is how I did it using those tools. Heck, I probably don't even know the best way to use those tools, but it works for me so i'm cool.

Here's the registration link: https://www.gotomeeting.com/register/235363748

There's both a web component and an audio component. The audio component is critical as that's where the information is disseminated. The web portion is so you can visually see what i'm doing.

You can use either a landline or your PC to connect in. I'll provide the PC connection details later as we're currently looking to see if we can bridge those two. (I've been using both a telephone headset and a PC mic to hack that together). For our international brethren, we've had folks from Canada, Australia, Ireland, England, Iraq, Egypt, and Vietnam join us.

Here's the agenda:
1) Overview of what I did, why I did it, and how it helped. 5mins
2) CQC Overview & Architecture 5min
2) How to physically hook devices up to an HTPC for control - 5mins
3) How to tell CQC you have devices connected, and use it to easily create and render a screen to control them in realtime - 45mins
4) How to setup ElkRP to monitor your devices 15mins
5) How to use CQC's event manager and the Elk together to perform the following: 15mins
5a) scheduled tasks (i.e., irrigation, turn off all devices at midnight)
5b) triggered tasks (i.e., turn off all devices when you ArmAway the Elk. turn on the light when you open the closet door)

That's 90 minutes of content. The remaining 30 minutes is intentionally unallocated as questions in various places take up the rest of the time.

Thanks for reading, hope to see some of you there. We need more inductions into the HA cult!

you could use Skypeout, which would dial into your conference bridge, and if your using a usb head set, you can also send that audio out to the other program at the same time.

Reminder that this is in 45minutes (8:30am PST). See the link in my sig for details.

Here's the collateral i'll use for the first 25 mins if you want to scan it.
