First Sub Purchase My Choices - Thoughts?

This will be my first sub purchase. I have narrowed it down to these choices but I would apprecaite any other suggestion you might have.

My HT is 18x18 aprox. 3000 cubic feet

50% music 50% movies

Your thoughts please. This is my price range as well.

HSU STF 2 : 10 25Hz $349.00

AV123 Onix X-Sub : 8 28Hz $199.00

Elemental Design A3-250: 10 18HZ $300

BIC Acoustech H-100 : 12 24Hz $249.00

Velodyne VRP 1200 : 12 29Hz $300.00

Thanks for your input!

Can't go wrong with the Velodyne

x-sub is great but, too small for your room. i speak from experience. on that list for your room size and budget- hsu. of course if you could bump to a 12" hsu you should. but that may not be possible for you. but, dont waste your money on a cheap 12" either.
You might want to rethink all of your sub choices if you truly have 3000 Cubic INCHES
post #5 of 28
LOL.. big room- didnt catch that .

stf-2 should "theoreticaly" work but yes, going up to an HSU 12" would be the best- according to the brands you have listed. but, again it is a jump in price. if you could hold off for a couple weeks and get a 12" i would. besides stf 2 is backordered for 2 more weeks anyway- i just ordered a 2.3 - backordered too.

but again, try not to be impatient and get a subpar sub simply because it IS 12". assuming you dont want to upgrade in 6 months.

good luck.

Thanks for the correction .... Your right, feet does sound better.

Anyway, thanks for the comments guys. I am in no hurry to make a purchase but I am limited to $400 & under. Kids in college etc......budgets...blah..blah...blah

What about the 12" Velodyne VRP 1200? Thats a 12 incher .... You really think a 10" would be to small? I am game for a 12" if thats what i need for this size area. I had the feeling that a 10" would be about right. I kinda thought the x-sub was to small but wanted some feedback. It gets great reviews but probably not for my size HT.

Have you looked at the offering from SVS. I am a big fan, and they have great service.

Yeah I've looked at the PB10-NSD but it is the only SVS that comes close to my budget but slightly above. I rank it right along with the Velodyne's and HSU. From what I read, which is all that I do, they are a cut above most.

I purchased the STF-2 a few weeks ago for a similarly sized room (22x15). The sub is good and is certainly more than adequate for most uses, but if you're a basshead, it might leave you wanting for more. really comes down to if you want to shake the whole house or just want good bass. Step up to the 12" if you want big-time bass.

Hsu Is a solid choice, If you can strech the budget to the vtf 2.3 it would be better for a room your size.

That PB10-NSD competes with subs costing up to $1000. It's a very nice sub, and for the money a great value.

I think I am probably down to the HSU STF2 $379.00 shipped, the VTF2MK2 $429 shipped, or the PB10-NSD $478 shipped. VTF and PB10 are probably more than I want to spend. Know where I can get one cheaper?

I apologize to AVS for posting in the wrong "sub" forum. Will not happen again. Guess I should end this but I am really getting the awesome feedback I hoped for. Thanks....

Hey, yesterday there was a B-stock PB10 for $399 which may still be available. Just to let you know I recently bought a B-stock unit. Heck, can't find anything wrong w/it. Not affraid to buy anything B-stock from SVS. This would keep you very close to your budget. Good luck in your decision. I will say the PB10 is stellar no doubt about it.

Yeah the Hsu subs offer a trmendous value as well. However, from my own understanding it seems that Hsu does not have much B-stock available. The last time I called them asking about B-stock availability I was told they keep an active waiting list. However, it has been a while since I called in that regard and as such things could be different now. Personally, I believe the OP would be happy with SVS or Hsu.

actually OP HSU does have what you're looking for in b-stock http://www.hsuresearch.com/outlet.html

happy hunting...

I stand corrected. Thanks for the link. As I mentioned, the OP would be happy with SVS OR Hsu imho.
yes go hsu or svs and be happy and not wonder if you could've done better. either will give you years of enjoyment. unless of course you come into $2000 or so then...

Due to your very overwhelmingly great input I made a purchase.

A longtime AVS member on here saw the thread and sold me his 2yr old HSU STF-2 for way under new cost. He upgraded to a larger VTF model.

I guess I should end this thread since it's in the wrong place anyway.

Thank you all for the advice!!

awesome, glad to help. you will be happy and will realize it was a "sound" choice for your budget and beyond.

The purpose of the Search engine is to search old threads for information. If all the "ended" threads were deleted, there would be no old threads to search and it would certainly make the site less rich. I'm not sure why you want the thread deleted.
