charging harmony 1000

Thread Starter
hey I just bought my new harmony 1000 remote and I was trying to figure out the best way to charge one of these things. I know it has a lithium ion battery and usually the best way to charge these things is to let it run dead and then charge it back up to maximum capacity. So should i do this or just charge it to maximum and when im finishe leave it on the charger. Any oppinons would be greatly appreciated.

It shouldn't have a memory. Keep it fully charged as much as you like. If it makes you feel better, run it down completely every few weeks.

I have heard that with the lithium-ion batteries that it is okay to continually recharge them. You do not have to let them run dead before a recharge like some of the older technology batteries (NiCad, etc.). I read in an article not too long ago that it actually shortens the life of the Lithium-ion if you let them run down completely before you recharge them. This is what I have heard/read, FWIW.

Lithium-Ion are very different from Nickel-Cadmium.

First, you reduce the lifespan of the battery if you charge it to the top all the time. Charging it to 80% and calling that "full" makes the battery last a lot longer. Sadness is that you can't tell whether the designers of your equipment designed it to charge to 75%, 95%, or 100%. Chances are it's one of the latter two, though, so your battery will die at some point.

Second, they don't like being totally drained. If you totally drain a Li-Ion battery, you will significantly shorten its lifespan (to the point of being able to totally kill the battery). Well designed equipment with Li-Ion batteries won't let the batteries actually drain that much, instead calling something like the physical 5% mark "empty" and shut down the connected equipment.
