Sony 70XBR2 getting a new light engine

Last week I had Rick out to Calibrate my set, and he said it was out of focus. The first one he has seen.

Sony came out today, and within 2 minutes he said we have a focus problem. A few minutes on the phone with Sony and a new light engine is on the way to the store.

The TV is out of focus, they think the lens got moved in shipping.

It is scary as I thought the HDTV picture was beautiful. I can't wait tell they put it in.

So am I the first?

Well, this posting is OT, but have you driven a BMW compared to a Lexus? They are two completely different cars in how they drive, which is why some choose one over the other.

Back to the topic, if the picture looked great to you, what was the symptom of the lack of focus? Was it observable in normal viewing, or only with the calibration disc in?

I am about to have mine replaced because of 4 bad pixels. I am concerned that replacing this part might make matters worse. The TV looks AWESOME but I noticed 4 dead pixels so Sony agreed to fix it free. Should I be concerned about replacing this part?

I'm very surprised Sony agreed to replace the OB for 4 dead pixels. My 70" XBR2 also has about 4 dead pixels. So what? There is no way that you can see them or that they affect the picture quality in any way. This number of dead spots is well within Sony's QC acceptance for these panels. I would leave well enough alone IMHO.

Was it "Sony" that came out or a local authorized repair shop? What did they do to diagnose and to see the out-of -focus problem?

Local Authorized shop came out. They could see it once they hooked up a device that put up test patterns.

If it wasn't for Rick, I would have never known there was a problem.

Sony has been unbelievable in terms of service. Not only did they want me to be fully satisfied and take care of the dead pixels, they also gave me several extra $300.00 bulbs for the inconvenience I experienced. Sony may not be cheap but the customer service is unbelievable. In fact I got this new 2007 1080p model simply because my old 2003 70 inch Grand Wega had a melted cover over the light bulb. I complained and for $800.00 I was given a brand new TV. With the extra bulbs I am actually AHEAD of the game.
