HV20 for News: Rudy Giuliani, Judith Nathan and Barbara Walters of ABC 20/20

Real world sample of HV20 in use in a news setting. While we had a "professional crew" shooting I thought I would use the Canon HV20 to test how it would perform in a fast moving environment like time square, NYC with 3 news makers. Unfortunately I had Image Stabilization off from a prior tripod shot.

Too bad about the shake... looks great otherwise.
Did you see the guy bump Barbara right out of there! (Around the 1:09 mark)

Thanks for the footage!
Did you use the on camera mic for this? It's a little crazy with the crowd and the open area, but those interested in the on camera mic might want to take a listen.

That clip came out very good, except for the shake What settings did you have the HV20 on? Auto?

That was good footage except for the minor shake...but at least that gives me a good idea of what that camera can do in real use...I'll take it!.

Footage was OK, but I really want to caution anyone not owning this cam that when displayed on an HDTV (with steadyshot on ), your footage will look MUCH sharper and more impressive. I kind of cringe when I see footage like this because I know the camera is capable of so much sharper and more detailed results. When I look at footage I've shot with either the HV10 or HV20 on my 50" Fujitsu plasma, it really looks much much better.

Bottom line is if you're impressed with what you saw here, you'll be dazzled when you see the footage on a true HDTV.

I've got to get to a place where I can see/hear this video. 26400 bps is my speed @ home.

But, sounds like people like it.

I agree 100% about the shake, but that is why I started with "Real world" in the description. Crowd shots are very hard to get right, so many things for the camera to focus on, people pushing from all sides, walking backward, holding the camera higher than I like... as with many things, they never go as planned.

Looking back there were 2 critical mistakes.

1. I noticed in the manual it says "we recommend setting the image stabilizer to OFF when using a tripod". I was using a tripod for the prior 10 shots and wanted to get the best quality, then I forgot it was OFF when shooting this clip. I may take another shot in a crowd with it OIS "ON" just to see how much it helps.

Question: What is the downside to just keeping the image stabilizer "ON" all the time, even for tripod shots? I am planning on this from now on.

2. I really need more experience in shooting "hand-held" video.

Some random thoughts on the HV20 when I review all the shots I have taken over the last week.

1. Even with a mono-pod, wide angle and OIS "ON" I notice the smallest camera movement.

2. The "CINE MODE" profile footage looked a bit dull and soft. Not the 24p, just the recording profile.

3. I love this camera and all the shots I have taken when the subject was less than 5 feet away from the lens and I was using a tripod.

Cheers.
