I'm putting together a HT system for my parents, they aren't looking for the best stuff here... they're used to their 27" CRT without any seperate audio. They've stepped up and decided to get a plasma (50" Samsung), a new receiver, and 3.0 system (no sub). I would say they that are unlikely to upgrade this system in the next 10-15 years, I could see them upgrading the DVD player MAYBE to an Oppo if their current one pukes.
I'm trying to find the most cost effective receiver that is going to accomplish my needs. I'm trying to stay away from having to using an up-converting receiver due to the additional cost. I want to provide all switching through the receiver.
Equipment:
-Samsung Plasma (HP-T5054)
-DVD Player (Component, not HDMI at this point, but what HDMI option for future would be nice)
-Dish HD Satelite Receiver (HMDI)
-CD Player
The TV will be about 12' from the other equipment on an opposite wall, we are running all of the wiring in-wall. Now I know that HDMI is supposed to be better than component, but are we really talking a big different to someone who can't see both back-to-back and is used to looking at a crappy 27" CRT? If I don't need HDMI I could run component from the dish HD-STB to the receiver, then component and audio to the TV... component cables are also less expensive that HDMI.
-OR-
To be future proof I could run both HDMI, component, and audio to wall plates at the receiver and TV. I think running all 3 would be cheaper than upgrading to a up-converting receiver. That way they could use HDMI for the HD-STB and component for the DVD player. I think this second option is the way I need to go if I want HDMI and a receiver that does NOT up-convert.
I'm also looking for an online source to purchase all of the various wall plates which we need... HDMI (if used), component, audio, and speakers... is there a wall plate that has all of these on one plate?
Thanks for the help....
