DIRECTV Plus HD DVR - landline required?

I just ordered the DIRECTV Plus HD DVR; however, I don't have a telephone land-line, are they required for the dvr service to work? I've had all of my other receivers installed without a land-line without a problem, but I don't know how the dvr service works...
