2007 Samsung LED Owner's Thread (HLT XX87/89S) - Page 434

I have the Samung HL-T5687SA and for the last two days my screen has been going blank regularly. the tv does not power down, sound continues and the screen bounces back quickly, but I can't understand the cause.

anyone have any ideas? as long as it's fixable I don't even really mind having an issue but it's driving me nuts.

Update (re: My Samsung Previous Post,...

The repair company called and said someone higher up from Samsung called and got the approval needed on the warranty extension, so my repair is scheduled for next Tuesday.

I'm glad for the movement in the process, but still leary of what lies ahead in the repair.

Samsung called a couple of minutes after the repair company to insured they contacted me. It was nice that they followed up.

Anyone out there with a smaller sized set have issues? I'd like to hear about them!

Hi Terran,
My Red LED missing saga has just begun. I have the 5087SAX so it's not just in the larger sets. I "Samsung authorized " service tech has been having trouble getting the part (LED). I just hope that's the problem and not the tip of the iceburg. I'll keep you guys posted.

Just wonderful. Looks like I'd better be crossing my fingers! Thanks for the information!

Call the tech and get the part number. Then call the J&J number below and find out the status of the part. If they say "national backorder" it means you won't be getting your tv fixed. If you are out of warranty, I have seen the individual LED's on Ebay... some new and some pulled from dead sets.

Also, they may string you along and try replacing parts that have nothing to do with the problem... don't stand for it. The Samsung number below is different than the main number. Call them, mention things like "Better Business Bureau" and "NJ Attorney Generals investigation"

Expect to be offered a low end B-Series 46" LCD set as a replacement. Sorry to be so negative, I hope it works out.

Please don't tell me this. My repair guy came out yesterday and said there would be no problem getting a new red LED and it would only take 3 - 4 days. I hope he's right. I'm not under warranty anymore so no reason for him to string me along.
I actually think these sets are totally repairable. If I was not under warranty, I would have scavenged the parts, and tried the repair myself. The problem with Samsung is that they don't fix the minor part that is broken, they replace entire boards or light engine etc. If that major component is not available, they give up. With persistence, and knowledge, the TV's should be fixable.
I see a bunch of you indicating fairly precise totals of hours on your sets--how do you get this information? I'd be curious to see how many mine has.

I bought my HLT6187S 10/2007 had the halo issue fixed a few months later, and everythings been fine since.

Now I'm having a problem, but its not a loss of red like the common complains seem to be here.

Usually, when I power the TV on, the green light flashes approximately 3-4 times before the picture kicks in. Saturday afternoon it flashed about 6 times, Saturday night it flashed about 6-8 times, and just now, the TV didn't power on, just kept flashing, turned off and back on, still kept flashing, etc. I tried to hit the source button in case there was an issue with my 360 or PS3 not being powered on, but nothing happened. After approx 5 minutes while I started reading this thread, the TV went on.

When its on, it seems to work fine, but having a long power-up is not cool, and i'm afraid one day it just won't turn on. Gah!

Any ideas?

I know it probably sounds silly, but try unplugging your HDTV's power plug for awhile (maybe even overnight)...and then plug it back in to see if that helps.

The procedure to enter the service menu is on a string a few pages back. Lamp hours is in there.

Thanks SeanU,
I got the "authorized service tech coming soon" I'm a bit worried since he admitted he hadn't worked on one of these sets before. EEEEK!
If it's not the LED I'm calling the BBB for sure. I'm still trying to get some relief from Sammy ECS. We'll see.

OH NO!!!

I had my 2 year old 6187X running tonight and i went and took a phone call, came back and the screen was black. Turned it off and then back on, screen flickered 3 times and then the green LED blinked 5 times and no picture, I get sound and the channel changes, just no picture. Perfect geometry and never any problems until how. I have extended warrenty through Best Buy guess I will call them tomorrow.

Hope my 6 year old RCA 50 inch DLP still works, have not turned it on for 2 years.

There seem to be 2 main issues with the sets... red led's dropping, and the power on issue.

The power issue has a good thread covering it here :

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=2054

I have not seen any threads where someone has replaced an LED on their own, if you have a link, post it for others. I think this topic deserves its own new thread :"Samsung LED DLP Failures" . It would be good to gather up the info in one place.

Keep us posted on the result. The exact same thing happened to my boss last night (her and I have the same TV). She is waiting on the Circuit City rep to call her today to set up a tech appointment.

I called BB for extended warranty and the repair shop picked up the set 18 hours later, so far that is very good. So in less than 24 hours from the failure it is now in the shop. Now just wait to see how long it takes and what the repair is going to be. If I did not have the warranty I would try to fix it myself as I have the shop manual and I am a retired video engineer that designed color TV many years ago at RCA.

Mike:
Don't go away and please hang on to that shop manual!! Some of us whose warranties have expired may need your expertise before this is all over! If these LED DLPs are going to start failing en masse, we're going to need some one who can help us keep them working, especially if that law suit in NJ doesn't get decided in our favor.

I second that. Whenever it comes down to tossing some electronics in the trash, I've never hesitated to warm up the 'ole soldering iron and give it a go!

I really like the 6187 picture, especially after I had to go back to my RCA 50 inch 720P DLP. I hope it can be fixed, but I will keep the service manual and my soldering iron warmed up JIC. Usually the biggest problem with repairing down to the component level is getting the correct parts to fix the problem.

Lawsuit in NJ? What did I miss?

My complaint will concern the continued sale until relatively recently of the DLP LED LIGHT ENGINE version; mine being a 61" HLT6187SX/XAA slim model manufactured 8/2007 and failing 4/2008. They knew that there is an inherent design flaw and stopped production and will not address the problem saying only that it is out of the 1 year mfgr warranty. There must be hundreds of complaints found online concerning this issue. Now the problem is in finding the correct light engine to get the unit up and running again (for however long that might be), replacement light engine is said to be back ordered up to 8 weeks. Wonder what gives???????

Hi Guys,
Just had the repair guy out and went through the Red LED replacement process. It was a piece of cake! Once the back cover is off The light engine comes out on a easy to remove tray (two screws and remove a few connectors). Once the light engine is on a table there was a plastic cover to remove which allows access to the LED's. Each LED has a huge copper heat sink attached. Once you remove the heat sink the LED unplugs like a spade fuse and pops right off. Remove and replace then button up in reverse order. Geometry still spot on and picture is back to wonderful. I took some pictures during the process and will post them soon. As long as we can get those LED's we should be in OK shape. Still, 2000 vs the 20,000 hours that was advertised? I'm still fighting Sammy on this one.

Hello,

Don't know if anyone can help here, but my Samsung and Cable Box do not play well together. I have them hooked up via HDMI. The Motorola has been set to 1080i and Native with all the different 4:3 overides. Yet, the Motorola is downcoded to 720p from 1080i in the menu automatically (both the TV and STB indicate 720p). This seems to happen if the TV and/or the STB is turned on without the other item being on. I never had this problem until I obtained the new DCX3400. My old Motorola always stayed at 1080i. The TV seems to communicate to the STB and changes the settings without me going into the menu.

Does anyone know how to fix this? If so, I'd appreciate the help.

Motorola's Officicial Response to this problem:

Response (Motorola Technical Support) - 07/07/2009 03:52 PM
Valued Motorola Customer,

Thank you for choosing Motorola. I apologize for the inconvenience you are having with your product.

I understand that you are having problems with your DCX3400 switching from 1080i to 720p. I will be happy to provide information on why the box switches.

The box will find what display modes your TV will support and adjust its own settings accordingly. The TV and the STB has to make a HDCP handshake anytime you change input modes or turn off your TV. The only way to get around the problem of HDCP forcing your STB or (Set-Top-Box) to display at 720p is to use component cable which will still support up to a 1080p signal. Component cable does not use HDCP like HDMI does to establish an audio/video connection between your STB and your TV.

Please visit our web site at http://broadband.motorola.com/consum...rt/default.asp to access your user guide and frequently asked questions about your product.

Sincerely,

John

This is really good news. Looking forward to the pictures. Any info on a source for the LEDs?

Some days this week the TV powered on relatively quickly, some days it took a little longer. This morning, hasn't powered on at all.

Checked the other thread linked above (thanks) and hit the internet for other threads and it seems numerous Samsung LCD/DLP TVs of the last few years have undersized capacitors that blow out around 15-18 months, just out of warranty. I'm ASSUMING this is what my problem is.

Last week, Samsung told me "out of warranty, call an authorized service center," and gave me only one to call, different than the one I called for the halo fix in early 2008. Wouldn't give me another for price comparisons. Service center wanted $75 to look at it, and $150-$250 +parts to fix it, so I told them to hold off.

Called Samsung this morning and said this is kinda foul, but they fixed my halo problem in warranty with not much of a hassle, and this seems to be another easy fix so I'll give them a chance. It seems like another tiny part needs to be replaced, but since I'm not a tech, and I don't have soldering experience, I'm not trying it myself. So why don't they just sent a dude with some capacitors and call it a day. Samsung executive customer service asked for a copy of my receipt and said assuming its in order, they will extend the warranty to fix it.

So let's see. If this resolves itself relatively quickly at no cost to me, I'm still gonna come down on the side of happy but cautious camper. Yes two major problems with a $2000 TV that could be fixed with $2.00 parts is a little weird, but I'm chalking that up to sloppiness more than crappy manufacturing since it seems the major parts work.
The problem is that repair people just do module changing. They may not even know how to solder at all. Manufactures do not supply very many parts now only modules. Also the repair shops don't have to time to try to troubleshoot down to the component level even if they knew how. Also it takes special tools and skills to replace surface mount parts.

OK, BestBuy called me on the repair of my 6187 with no picture. They said that parts to fix the 6187 are not available and they are going to give me a "replacement" HDTV. I need to go to the store and talk to them to see what the options are for an equivalent HDTV. Bummer!

Alright, my 6187s has these large bright spots in two different places that only appear when the screen is dark. They pretty much look like huge finger prints smears.
It's not on the outside of the screen itself. And it's not the "Halo Effect" as I also have that but that's hardly noticed.
Anyone have any idea what it could be? Anyway to fix it? I'm willing to open it up myself if it's a simple fix.
I have lurking here for a long time reading and crossing my fingers that my tv will hold up. I have the 5687s and now just past two years (in May) the Tv is buzzing like crazy. Prior to this the set has been fantastic and I wish to thank eveyone for the contributions that have helped me get the best out of this tv.

I have warranty through the credit card company so hopefully it can be repaired.

Does anyone here happen to have the notice that Samsung gave you three extra months of warranty when you registered it online. I can't find it on thier site.
