2007 Samsung LED Owner's Thread (HLT XX87/89S) - Page 472

No picture on my HLT5689 as of today. They LED light will flash continously for a few minutes and then the TV will turn itself completely off. Also the TV has lost HDMI connection with the receiver over the past couple weeks and then resets itself. Anyone have any ideas what is wrong? Thanks

already had the dlp chip replaced under warranty 2.5 years ago for the white dot issue....no
The overwhelming color by far was blue. The picture was stil there it was just biased towards blue. I did the DMD Chip thing too. I had both black and white dots.

Just the single LED? Or are all 3 LEDs blinking?

Just the far right LED.

The less than helpful service Manual says "the picture will automatically appear in about 15 seconds."

I vote power supply. You may want to search the thread and see if your symptoms match any previous posts.

Sorry...not much help.

After pulling off the back it looks like the capacitors on the led power supply are swolen. I have already ordered a new power supply and hope it helps.

Let us know how you make out. Hopefully, that is the issue. Normally filter cap replacement is pretty easy. Once your new supply is in and working, for a few $$ and a little time you can probably repair the old and have a spare. Soldering skills are not too tough for that kind of repair. Post if and when you want to try.

I agree with dengland. I would even go a step farther and replace the capacitors myself and try that before ordering a new part.

I count 8 caps that are leaking. My home was struck my lightning 4-5 months ago and I wonder if this contributed to the failure. I lost many electronics from that event.

Usually age does the Caps in. Lightning damage I would expect to show up as charing or something violent looking on a component. Not sure though...

A friend of mine posted as "blockhead" a page back. His tv went black on him, but you can still make everything out, just not bright enough to be able to watch. I am working on the tv now....

I played around inside and when I messed with the LED tubes the picture came back. After 5-10 minutes, green goes out (so everything is purple). then after 3 more minutes the screen goes back to the black.

Every time I jiggle the green LED wires, the picture comes back for 5-10 minutes and repeat. I believe the green LED is going. Is this a fair assessment or am I off base?.....and where can I buy one if that is the case?

Searching the web i found a settlement where Samsung is repairing TVs because of known capacitor issues. Gave Samsung a call and a tech will be coming Friday to repair my TV for free. Settlement link is below

Samsung tech came out and replaced both power supplies, however the TV is still not working. He used a 9 volt battery to test the LEDs and they are all working. He believes the LED driver is the cause, but not sure. I guess the only other cause could be the main board. Both these boards are pretty expensive and I need to decide how much money I want to invest in the TV to try to get it working again.

That is a tough call. Watch this ugly comment.. It is pretty easy to find a 55/56" TV at a reasonable price. 65" would be a little harder.

It is probably time to call it quits. I think that is what I would do. (says the guy who bought an RGB switcher because the HDMI got flakey)

it appears that my green led failed

whites are red but blues still show

i have the service manual and have taken the set apart before so I'm willing to fix this myself

i assume i should put a meter on the leds and test them all and check for other stuff while I'm in there

i don't mind searching the thread but if anyone can help or can point me in the right direction i wouldn't mind

edit: dug up some good info so far...

http://www.avsforum.com/t/827799/2007-samsung-led-owners-thread-hlt-xx87-89s/13020#post_17003416

which sections to use in the service manual...

3-1-3 Separation of the Optical Engine
3-1-8 Separation of the LEDs

and a part if it IS the green led...

http://ehservice.ca/parts/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=1565

looks like i might need some arctic silver....any other mods that people suggest, like extra fans?

With my Sony KP61V90, it had mad issues the first month. Then, once fixed, it worked problem free for over 6 years. I just recently replaced it with the 6187s, which I am hoping for the same amount of luck. I wasted about $800 in Extended Warranties on the Sony, never again.

lol, reading through this thread for info and this comment struck me as funny considering the issues with this set

my extended warranty paid off well

well it went from bad to worse

i was in the service menu checking the led hours and looking for the test patterns

i was on number 22 DMD>Digital and the next thing i know my picture is completely gone

it seems that function is a data transfer, so i think it was just a coincidence, but i could be wrong

anyway....when i turn on the tv it flashes a red tinted dark color three times, but then goes completely black after a few seconds, if i have all the lights in the room off, i can see a faint pulsing flash on the screen

so perhaps my led driver is bad? i pulled the back off and will start checking things tomorrow at some point

any advice is welcome

so i got it apart

so far i have tested the LEDs

amazingly the blue and green LEDs are bad, while the red LED still works

would that be enough for me to not have a picture or do i have even more problems?

This section is on page 49 of the service manual...it seems that it may be relevant to the blinking indicators I saw last night

Troubleshooting
1-1 Indication: Indicates the status of the leds for illumination and a driver
1-1-1 Indicating leds are on the driver board(OP9001 - OP9003).
1-1-2 Each color led(red/green/blue) for indication is for the diagnosis of a color illumination led and a driver board.
1-1-3 The status is determined by blinking times of a indicating led.

1-2 Operate driver in internal mode
1-2-1 switch the slide switch(sw9001) is as followed(Fig.1).
1-2-2 internal mode: driver is operated regardless of the DMD signal.
1-2-3 external mode: driver is operated according to the DMD signal.

Blinking times Indication Remark
1 short status
2 open status or F9000/F9002 open
3 overtemperature LED for illumination

Looks like I caught the sticky pixel disease. In the last week, I've gone from a perfect image, to right now 4 white pixels (one has popped up every 2 days). Looks like I'll be in for a DLP replacement in the coming month or so - for now, I'll deal with it unless I find some extra cash laying around, or it spreads considerable worse... At least I know the parts are still available - and I have no worries about my ability to do the repair..

yeah, even though i was under warranty when that happened to me 2 years ago, I just dealt with it for a little while until it got annoying and I had time for an appointment

it's a pretty pricey part, but it's not terribly difficult to change out

just watch out for dust getting on the middle section of the chip, that happened to me and I had to go back in and clean it out

I'm looking for some suggestions.I have the 61" and have had the power supply and capaciters replaced using the samsung capaciter settlement twice,so thats not my issue. Problem is whenever the set is cold and I try to power it on the green LED on the front of the display will blink steady for about 30- 40 seconds then stops. Its as though the TV stops trying to turn on, and at that point it will ignore all subsequent power button presses via the remote or hard button on the display itself.I need to physically unplug the AC then plug back in again in order to try again. After that the set powers on.Any thoughts what it could be?

my green and blue LEDs showed up today

tested both at work with my cell phone battery and almost blinded myself

got my fingers crossed that switching these out is all I have to do
post #14155 of 14547
turned out to just be the green led

for some reason the blue didn't light up with a 9v but did connected to my cell battery

the blue shows some buckling on the small pins so I'm going to keep the extra led just in case

my settings had been movie mode and warm2 which according to the test drive by another user is hard on the green

i didn't have much dust in there, so i think the setting is the culprit

i will be switching to warm1 from now on

Hey Sneakking - just curious about how you got past that problem.

Put in a new LED driver like the Samsung Tech suggested and the TV still will still not turn on. Looks like the problem is related to the mainboard instead and that board cost $300. Looks like a new Sony LED LCD is in my future. I will have to jump ship to a different brand due to all the problems I have had with Samsung. I will probable part out the TV since I have brand new power supplies and a DMD chip that is only 4 months old.

initially my screen turned red, but you could still see blues:

then when i was in the service menu, my screen went dark...when i pulled the back off i could tell the lamp was still working, but nothing i did would get a picture back (sorry no photo)

the next day i took it completely apart to check the leds....here is the dust accumulation:

not too bad for 4.5 years and never having opened that section up...i would vacuum occasionally, but never that far in (that will change from now on)

i tested the leds with a 9V battery....red lit up, but green and blue did not....so i assumed that my screen went dark because two leds were out

here is a photo of the blue led, notice the pins on the one side that look distressed:

when i got the blue and green leds that i ordered, both tested fine when i connected leads to my cell phone battery...i decided to try that on the old ones and the old blue one lit up!

so i decided to simply change out the green, pictured here:

there was no distressing similar to the blue one, but the die(?) in the middle had a couple of discolorations (not visible in photo)

i took off the old, cleaned the heatsink with rubbing alcohol and added arctic silver 5, put it all back together and it worked like a charm!
follow up:

here is the new blue led:

notice how the connectors only come from the two sides instead of three and they appear to be a little more substantial (actually you may have to take my word for it, since the picture is fuzzy)

also, i don't think dust was the culprit, i think it was movie mode with warm 2 setting

notice the table here posted by glennlove:

http://www.avsforum.com/t/827799/2007-samsung-led-owners-thread-hlt-xx87-89s/13530#post_19202104

looks like running at 7.5 did my green led in....switching to warm 1 doesn't change the picture much, but cuts down both red and green while only upping blue a bit

lastly, i think i am going to try the fan mod that was posted a while back and vacuum out dust every three months or so

sorry to hear that

i was thinking the same thing about selling off the parts, you can make a good chunk of change doing that
