Well, thanks to an opening, i'll be moving into my own place on Saturday. Now it's really down to the wire on deciding which tv I want. Eagerly anticipating your impressions jnelson...

I'm on the edge of my seat, I want this tv, and can not wait to see what you guys think.

Yep, I've been refreshing this page all day.

Ill admit to being in a death struggle between this tv and sony's 50 inch sxrd the A2020. I admit I like the Sammy better, and I can't refresh this page fast enough. All the guys at the local BB know me by name, and all know I'm just waiting for them to put the sammy next to the sxrd.

WOW, I guess that I would be the first to actually post that I own a HLT6189S, have it hooked up and watching it as we speak.

Too early for a detailed assessment, but initial impressions are very favorable. Mucho improved over last years LED. Meaning contrast is a lot better.

More to come later...I am sure of it.

Would you be able to tell us more about the picture. I just got my hls 61" delivered today, and the colors are terrific. How are they on your set? I have 30 days with the set, but I'm definitely interested with the new led models. Any chance you would be able to offer a comparison of picture quality between the 2 (or other sets)?

Yeah, im real interested to hear about this too. I was going to get the 56" version of your tv hubba, but the problem is the only store I would buy it from is Brandsmart, and unfortunately they are now discontinued and out of stock there.

when I go to purchase online the best (SAFE and TRUSTED) sites for buying TVs have the hls5687w at around 1800 up when you add shipping and tax...and the hls6187w is like 2000 and up.

But why would I do that when Brandsmart tells me the new models they will sell for 1900?

I owned the hls6188 for 2 weeks and had major issues with the sceen, light engine, etc. If I had to choose, I would definately go with the HLT6189S over the HLS6188. The frame around the screen is much sturdier than the HLS series. No smudges :-), colors are very vibrant. Contrast is 100% better than last years LED sets.

Only menu items I changed is putting it in Movie Mode. Too late to fiddle with the other settings so that will just wait.

After a few movies, HD Sat, DVD, etc, I woulds say this is a very solid set OTB. Of course, I will get the full skinny when I get this calibrated (which will be the week of 4/16).

PS. Don't get me wrong on the HLS 6188. It is a very accurate set professionally calibrated. If you can get the HLT6189S to within a few hundred $ of the HLS, swap it for the LED. You will get that back with the savings from the LED technology.

I'd like to think I got a decent deal for the hls, and i'm nnot too aware of the t-models pricing. But if there is a major improvement, I'll definitely consider it.

If you concentrate on "just the facts" that newcomer's will want to find over and over again that should work fine.

Then if someone with a little HTML knowledge does a "FAQ of links thread" to all the "how to do it" posts that are created, it will help everyone get the best information about this new technology.

Docrings did a great job with Samsung HLS xx87/xx88 Tech Links. Maybe someone, with a lot of time, can improve the organization for the HL-T LED sets.

A friend of mine is looking at getting the 61" 87S model and he was saying that these models use a 1920X540 chip and use the wobulation technique to get full 1080p res instead of the full 1920X1080 chip? Is this still the case. I didnt think that anybody was doing the wobulation stuff anymore i thought that all the tvs were using native 1920X1080 DLP chips? Does anyone know for shure what the DLP chip is in these bad boys?

1080p RPTV sets have always used DMD chips with 960x1080 mirrors.

Each of the 960 columns of DMD mirrors are wobulated approximately the width of a pixel so that each mirror can control two adjacent pixels on the screen. It's too fast to see. There is a single wobulation mirror that changes the direction of the light from all the DMD mirrors at the same time.

There are some front projectors coming into the market that use a DMD with 1920x1080 mirrors. At this point no RPTV has been announced that will use this 1920x1080 chip. It's expensive.

What i really want to know- The major deal is the PQ (color, contrast etc) On par with the Color Wheel model. Thats all I care about- Id like to the LED just cuz of future- But i dont see rainbows myself, But i know the HLS5679 and HLS5687 - The latter to me was the clear choice. (Again i dont see rainbows)

An owner already! Samsung is definitely ahead of the their normal release curve. How about some opinion on the measurable things. Like Pincushion in 4:3? What about the 1:1 can you bring up the test pattern to check for 1:1 and overscan? Any comments on the menu, seems like they have moved several service menu items into the user menu, can remove the floating blacks and disable edge enhance fully in the user menu??

Just curious, not that you'd want to spend your time watching your new TV rather than testing it

Stupid question alert: whats the differant between the 5089 and the 5087? I read that both have only one dmd, but I thaught that there was suposed to be 3 dmd's, and no color wheel?

The only truly stupid question is the one you drive yourself nuts with because you never ask. As for differences, Jonny_H quoted me on the first page of this thread:


The first two aren't all that important to me. The third difference (HDMI version) I view as "future proofing". I've since noticed one more difference - the 87 has USB v1.1 and the 89 has USB v2.0. My understanding is none of the LED models have a color wheel.


jonny_H, If you have a chance, you might want to edit the "differences" qoute to read:

HL-Txx87S - no PiP, no Bluetooth, USB 1.1 and unspecified HDMI version (probably 1.1 or 1.2)
HL-Txx89S - Single tuner PiP, Bluetooth (wireless headphones?), USB 2.0 and HDMI v1.3 w/CEC

Picked up the HL-T5089S today. Can we agree on a list of things people would be interested in seeing and knowing about these sets? Then the current owners can start filling in the blanks for others. I am willing to share info and know some of the things I am interested in, but don't want to dig through a growing thread to pick out what others are interested in.

I have been |-| close to pulling the trigger on a Pioneer 6070HD Plasma. The only thing that is keeping me from doing that is the Samsung HL-T6187S. I want/need to see one!

Someone had asked what questions we had. Beyond the standard "how does it look " questions:

1. Will the AUDIO OUT send through signals from HDMI as well as the normal analog sources?
2. Is Samsung finally doing 3:2 pulldown correction for 1080i sources to get back the 1080p/24 signal (used to only work for 480i).

3. what store did you buy it from?

4. x360 work on the vga input?

5. ps3 have any issues doing 1080p on the hdmi port?
