Here we go, I received my HL-T6187S today and set her up. I definitely need more time with this set but initial impressions have me blown away. Some of the things that were important for me right off the bat and some pictures are attached of the set + on the 2007 TR500X3B stand. The GoodColor and Picture
Wow. I was initially disappointed with the color of this set until I changed it to Movie mode and Warm 1. Most of my disappointment I found stemmed from DNIe being turned on. How they can market that thing as a "feature" is beyond me.
After those two minor adjustments the picture looks much better. My girlfriend commented "Wow, it looks 3d now!" which I've never EVER heard her say when watching anything.
I'll be doing an Avia and DVE tweak this coming weekend so I can only imagine how much better it'll look.
Black level on VGA, Component looks very black to me out of the box. Like it almost matches the piano black bezel with the lights off.
I'm very pleased.Banding
I didn't notice any out of the ordinary with VGA, Standard Definition, DVD's, and Component Wii/PS2 on any mode I fiddled with. I don't have a PS3 or Xbox yet but I'm sure the picture quality is worlds better. My initial impression is that this set corrects the problem I've read with last years 5679's.VGA
Text, color, everything looks fantastic in VGA mode at 1920x1080P. Holy crap, this is what I was looking for. As you can tell by the pics I enjoy my gaming Silk Screen Effect & Screen Door Effect
I'm very sensitive to SSE and SDE from my old set the Sony KL-W9000. Thankfully, this set is a huge improvement for me. As well it should be, being that the KL-W9000 technology is almost 10 years old now SSE:
I can see some light silk screen "shimmering" on bright solid colors if I'm under 5 feet from the set. It looks very fine and uniform. When I'm 7-10 feet it's negligible. This is a personal opinion, I'm used to far worse and far more distracting Silk Screen on my display. Gf is playing Paper Mario right now with the lights off in 480p and intense solid colors look great and uniform against each other.
On a side note, I'm really surprised with how much better the Wii games look in 480p. I wasn't expecting this much of an improvement over S-Video.SDE:
No visible pixel structure means no Screen Door Effect. I'm in love. VGA Underscan
To my surprise VGA is underscanned in 1920x1080P mode by about 3% on top and 5% on the sides. Mine was off-center also but was nothing a quick visit to Advanced options in the Geforce menu didn't cover. I was expecting overscan to the frame. I'll tweak it later this week.
UPDATE: The PC autoadjust that was suggested did not fix the underscan on this set. I still have relatively the same amount of underscan as before. I believe the picture is 1:1 based on the sharpness and clarity of the text. I don't know how this is possible but I'd like to hear other owners results with VGA on their sets to see if this is normal.
UPDATE 2: Pressing the "P Size" key on the remote allows pretty intricate resizing and positioning of the screen. VGA Underscan fixed. I'm moving this to positives now. Thanks to TMTick for the find. Pincushin
I measured the pincushin on all sides of the display.
Left side: 1/8th of an inch from top to bottom.
Right side: 1/8th of an inch from bottom to top.
Top: None, perfectly even as far as I could tell.
Bottom: 1/8th of an inch measuring from right to left.
I'm not sure what's normal for these displays but it seems okay to me. Barely perceivable, but let me know if I need to recalculate this or if it's alarming. The BadReflective Rainbows
I'm seeing a rainbow reflection on particular images. These are NOT the traditional type of lamp rainbows. They only appear (very faintly) on nearly entire black backgrounds with a single image. The Windows XP screen is a good test but I've also seen them on the Wii and PS2 once or twice. There are two of them, both about 2/3rds of the way down the screen in the middle and spaced about 6 inches apart.
It looks as if some very small portion of light is interfering with the black in the image. I've created a test pattern for other users to test on their HLT sets.HLT Reflective Rainbow Test Pattern
I also got a picture of the rainbow. I now believe that this dual rainbow is a reflection caused by something behind the screen. The left reflection is much easier to see than the right... and the left one barely came out in the photo. You can see a blue distortion (this looks like a soft rainbow in person) in the photo under the windows logo and above the loading bar.Left RainbowSoft Text (4-12)
I've noticed tonight that the lower right 6" x 6" of my display is softer than the rest of it. Here are two comparison photos of my win xp calendar at a similar distance, same lighting, and same camera. This one is probably pretty difficult to see.Hard Text
(Normal text on about 90% of the screen)Soft Text
(Soft text in bottom 6x6 inches of right-hand of the screen)
I believe this is also caused by the screen bowing in ever so slightly in the bottom right corner.High Definition Material
I'm a high definition noob. I figured I could get HD channels directly from the Time Warner coaxial cable uhh... well they don't come in and I'm not sure how to set them up. My options when scanning channels are Analog/Digital and STD, HDC, and IRC for each. Maybe I need a set top box or maybe I just set them up wrong.
Any assistance would be helpful. I'd like to see Planet Earth in HD
UPDATE 4-12: Thanks to bfdtv's assistance I was able to get some HDTV via Coax Cable on an IRC search on Analog/Digital.Large PicturesLayoutDesktopGf playing Paper Mario on WiiGamecube Super Smash Bros in default Dynamic
