I would much rather receive a refund from Samsung on the unit - rather then having BB foot the bill. BB has been great and sent out 2 units already and are losing as they have to cover the delivery / pickup. Many would not care - but I feel bad for them.

PROBLEM is that BB has no units that are equivalent to this unit. Even if they get the SONY A3000 in - that unit also has issues. They are not the same issues, but still they have issues that may bother someone like me.

I don't really know what to do. I need something large like this in my entertainment room - and can not wait until something else comes out in this price range (if ever)

If ANYONE has a perfect Samsung LED set - let me know. Perfect meaning no bowing / geometry issues / no halo + prism issues / no noise + shimmering in the picture + no dust / smudges.

Also the last rep said there are NO firmware updates - only for the LCD's, but then this goes against the other agent. The manager also said she 'heard' of an update - but had no info. I think its ridiculous that they don't have any idea what they are talking about. As for the refund from Samsung - well they have to service it before they refund it or even look at going that route.

I purchase 3 hlt5687 for myself, my brother and my son. I am a perfectionist and after owning an Sxrd sony with many problems these three sets I have perfect geopmety, very good color with perfect whites and at 10 feet no vision problems. I set up the other two sets the same way. No purple bacgrounds and a lot of brightness. GJN

What about the 61" versions? These are larger units and the LED units, and as I have observed the casing flexes quite a bit if you put pressure on it. Though that is not my real concern, but I have slight geometry / bowing issues on the center - the shimmering effect on parallel lines / leaves / trees / grass + the slight halo/prism effect etc...

This is ridiculous

+ my TV will make the tone when it turns on, and used to do the same when it turns off - but all of a sudden does not anymore... no matter if I change the settings... I don't 'need' it - but it was just something to have.

I am sick of this, and I see many Sony, Samsung, Toshiba, Mitsubishi owners feel the same way - why can't a company make a proper TV for the money. When you look at the Samsung LED, and see how its built and whats in it - I can't see why for the amount we are paying it can't be a good set. The TV has electronic components yes, but the mirrors, the screen etc... is nothing new - but its not working as it should.

Can't argue with you there. Sony and Samsung are in a dead heat when it comes to VERY POOR customer service.

Hi Gents,

WDreamsMayCome I agree totally with your assessment, just a little up or down is a big change in brightness of the top and bottom portion. I guess I'm the only person who has done the side by side comparison of the horizonal and less dramatic but noticable difference. Funny I would think the light projected onto the back is the same technology just the source of light being different and therefore don't quite understand why there would be such a dramatic difference.

As far as JDelfer's comment, I too would like to know because I already have a HDMI 1.3 PS3 and a HDMI 1.3 Onkyo 705 and wonder what would the result be when feeding this chain into a TV that only supports HDMI 1.1 or 1.2 inputs. What happens to the video, because the Audio won't matter I don't think cause the receiver has it already. That is unless the cross-talk/handshake says something like "Ok the worse link in our chain is 1.1/1.2 so everyone adjust down to it"

If anyone knows the result PLEASE PLEASE chime in.

Sean

They do exist. My friend has one. He got lucky. I didn't

There is nothing in your video source that HDMI 1.1 can't handle, and there probably won't be for a long time. Enjoy.

US Samsung was pretty easy. I called the number above, told the guy I read on the internet there was a fix, he put me on hold, then came back and emailed me the link to the firmware.

I do get some shimmers on straight lines, but I honestly think it's probably more the technology then the set that is doing that, but overall, I'm VERY happy with my set. This firmware should fix the only issue I really had with it and that's the Dynamic default bug.
Just out of curiosity how big is the thumb drive (capacity) they are sending out??

Also I upgraded to 1025 and it took care of the Dynamic mode issue. Is there any reason to upgrade to 1026 then??
Thanks

So it looks like I may be getting the TV replaced. I just hope they send me a good one as I am getting very annoyed at having to run home during work time to let the tech in. It also may be as if what Fetto said about 21 day return on repairing the TV , then samsung would exchange it may be true. Odd thing about it though is I have not heard from samsung saying they are replacing the TV. You would think I would get an email or a phone call letting me know that the TV was being exchanged. I guess I should be happy that they are exchanging the TV but still would expect better communication from them.

Got this in the email today. Samsung is replacing the TV due to all the problems I have had with it. Wish they had done this 1 1/2 months after getting the TV when I requested the replacement. Guess better late than never. Also for those with problem TVs should know that it may take a while, but Samsung will eventually stand by their TV and replace it after they haven't had any luck fixing it. IT was as easy as clicking YES in the email. 2 days to process and will be shipped in 7-10 days.

Dear xxxxxxxx ,

Thank you for your patience. We processed your exchange request with brand new replacement unit with the model shown below. You can also view detailed information about the replacement model by clicking the picture. Please click "Yes" to confirm the exchange, otherwise call us at 1-800-613-0453 (Mon-Friday, 9AM-5:30PM EST).

Original Model = HLT6189SX/XAA
Replacement Model = HLT6189SX/XAA

Process this exchange (Yes box)

The DNR settings is supposed to help with flickering. It doesn't completly eliminate it but i have seen it minimze it some with certain source material.

The best way to explain it is ( you can see green in places where there should actually be a shade of gray. Best place to look is during a black and white movie on DVD or satellite. You will see it in dark areas, maybe in someones gray hair or the shadow of a sleeve on a suit and things like that. I called Sammy and they had a tech out in 4 days to upgrade the HLT6189s from 1011 to 1014 firmware. They are sending another tech Friday to try again because that didn't work and I know 1016 is available on the new sets per this forum. They are very helpful and are trying to fix it, if they can't, I will keep having them try but I will not return the set. It is the best picture I have ever seen.

Some folks mentioned CNET saying no temp controls. Here are some pics from regular menus, not tech menus. You will see there are plenty of settings snd these are just a few.

I tired and it does reduce - but its still quite noticeable. I don't believe this is normal though - as it is shown regardless.

Just curious...I noticed that there are new HDMI 1.3a cables coming out, the supposed difference being increased bandwidth to support the new features (deep color, xvcolor, audio, etc.). Would there be any benefit to using this on a HDMI 1.0, 1.1. or 1.2 device? Just curious if the extra bandwidth would help on a lower HDMI device.

I'm still trying to get my tvs PQ up to par of the lamp version.. (6187S).. I've noted that the colors seem off or dimmer than the lamp version.. I really wasnt sure what was going on .. but now I think i'm closer to figuring this out..

My table it sits on, as mentioned before, is 25.75" tall and we sit back 16 feet or so.. does anyone else have a similar height with their set (and maybe distance).. with this set in particular?

I did finally notice, that if you raise up about 6 inches or so.. the top half of the display gets slightly brighter, granted not greatly brighter, but enough that where if you sit at normal position, the colors and brightness in the top 3rd are dull.. its almost like you have this cone of brightness where if you slip below center even slightly, it puts a shade on things on the top side if you will.. I would say our eyes are roughly 6" below center, or maybe not even quite that much.

I'm guessing this is why the colors seem dull or off.. almost "bluish" (probably related to the dimming effect)..

Are there any fixes for this.. is a tech who comes out likely to make an adjustment and fix this.. is a replacement set likely to fix this with better brightness? Or am i forced to either adjust the sitting position (hard to do) or lower the tv (replace the table with something shorter.. harder and more expensive to do due to the matching ent. center surroundings etc). Or maybe there is a way i can do something to the base of the tv to drop it down even 1 inch ?

Any thoughts.. I hate to go swapping tvs if the only fix is to change how we view it (though again, i dont see a huge improvement either way.. so maybe it is the set? SIGH )

yes, but have you managed to get 'my color control' to do anything? If I move the sliders the picture doesn't change on my set...

this is what I've been posting about since getting the TV, the vertical viewing angle is EXTREMELY limited (so much for the manual saying +/- 30deg) and there doesn't seem to be any way around it, you have to sit in the 'sweet spot' and not move vertically at all if you don't want the top/bottom of the tv to get dark.

I think you'll either have to lower the tv or raise your viewing position unfortunately.

Can anyone tell me why my HL-T5687S now refuses to recognize my upconverting dvd player attached to the HDMI3/DVI input when it worked oh so well in the HDMI2 slot?

Old setup that worked perfectly:
HDMI1 DirecTV HD-DVR connected to the TV via HDMI cable and to my receiver via an optical cable
HDMI2 Sony upconverting DVD player connected via HDMI cable to the television and an optical cable to my receiver

NOW:

HDMI1 is still my my DirecTV hd-dvr setup as before
HDMI2 is my new Toshiba A20 connected to my TV via HDMI cable and to my receiver via optical cable
HDMI3/DVI is now my Sony upconverting DVD player attached to my TV via HDMI cable (and as my receiver is older and only has two optical inputs one for tv taken up by my directv hddvr, and one taken up by the A-20, I know I'll need to get an optical cable splitter to get the sound, but I'm not even getting a picture... just keeps saying "signal not found"...

I tried switching the A-20 and the Sony upconverter between HDMI2 and HDMI3/DVR, no matter what slot, the A-20 works, but the previously working Sony upconverter does not... still "signal not found"

any ideas???

The tech told me an 8MB thumb drive but the files I downloaded were bigger than that, ~14MB if I remember correctly.

The Samsung 87s/89s and Sony xx3000 displays have the same vertical viewing limitations. Don't pick too high of a table to stick your display on.

+ whenever there is anyone wearing striped shirts / abstract designs - they flicker as well.

I notice this on parallel lines / vertical+horizontal - its crazy and damn annoying. If I put the TV into SPORT mode - it reduces - however it is still easily viewable.

Trying to narrow down the issues (thats why I asked the Canadian crowd) - however if anyone is seeing this 'flickering' - what is it?

Is it the compression of the HD channels? I believe I have seen this watching HD DVD as well - but I could not find a scene today to replicate it - but will look tomorrow.

I have the same problem I believe. See my post #4973 on pg. 166. Also see post #5007 from Avio which has links about what we believe is Moire.

I have verizon fios in New York on an HLT5687 and I don't recall this as a problem on my former HLR set.

As far as I can tell we are the only two people who have reported this particular problem.

I'm almost tempted to add a little fan on my stand in that area to circulate the air better.

There is a very easy solution to this problem. All you need is a phillips head screwdriver and about 2 minutes. Just loosen all the screws around the back edge of the screen that are used to attach the front screen to the back of the set and the popping sound will go away. The screws are very easy to get to and it doesn't require opening the set or anything. Just loosen them so they are not tight.

The popping sound is caused by different expansion rates of the plastic that the front of the set is made of compared to the back of the set. So as the plastic heats up it moves a bit. Once it can move freely instead of binding due to the tight screws you'll get no more popping sounds!

Found it - and yes - we have the same issue...

Can anyone help us...

I don't know if its really the feed - but I have tried to recreate with HD DVD media and can not find a good place to view it. If anyone has this 'moire' issue and can let me know that its the feed and not the TV or the TV and not the feed - let us know...

please post what the tech says, it'd be interesting to know if anything can be done about this in the service menu (maybe via the iris control etc.)

I tried to further refine my brightness/color issues..

If I throw a bright white screen up.. you can definitely see a little bit of a haze over the top 8" or more of the screen, from normal sitting position, perking up 5" makes things "even out". See "bright1~.jpg" below for a visual example. raised up 5 inches, simulates the tv being lower or the sitting area higher. The darkness issue is not what I would call horrid, but not perfect either..

I also ended up going with these settings, as i found the movie mode too subdued..

Standard Mode:
Contrast 83
Brightness 48
Shapness 0
Color 48
Tint G51
Color Normal
Wide color range
-of course.. all other settings off

I arrived at these numbers through calibration dvds and looking at still photographs where i knew how colors should be.
I think these are a little closer. Has anyone else found "standard" mode to be better?

**I still find that on the one "red" screen on the xbox 360 dashboard.. its more of a lightish redish orange than a darker red.. I cant recall exactly how this color is supposed to appear, but all other color matchings were tested here as well.

The other images are from fox, freeze framed (paused) on dvr..

I didn't notice this before but now I notice, about a third of the screen up from the bottom, a pattern that looks like "(((((((((((" only very close together. They disappear in the middle and then repeat on the other side. I don't really notice it when at proper viewing distance but definitely see it when close to the TV. It appears on all inputs. I'm not sure if it's been there the whole time or not, but does anyone know what this is?

LOL

I see that too - only when there is one color on the screen and on the far left and far right + when really close (say 1ft or so)

So what do you think that is...?
