2007 Samsung LED Owner's Thread (HLT XX87/89S) - Page 186

Since I can't find one on display to look, and I have been told that it has changed recently I'll ask...
Does the 6187 have a silver strip near the bottom of the set? I know the 6189 is completely black.

Moral of the story is to check ALL equipment, even the simplest cable, before crying wolf!

Good connections are critical. That is why I use Stabilant 22A on all my computer and A/V connections http://www.stabilant.com/appnt45h.htm . I learned of this stuff when I was working at a lab that created two of a kind electronics gear. The engineers used it on all non-optical connections. A little goes a long way. I am still using the 100mL bottle that I bought in the early '90s.

Here's a photo of the HL-T5687S from Crutchfield.com:

I have the HL-T5689S and it has no silver strip.

Had my 5087s and love the HD movies (HD-DVD/Blu-ray) and video games, but standard cable is very pixelated and blurry. Any help on this would rock. I have an HDMI cable going from my Comcast HD box to my TV. The only HD station that looks immaculate is Discovery HD--all other HD channels look only marginally better than SD.

On my old Toshiba 46" HDTV HD channels looked great. Why the difference with the Samsung? I did use component with the Tosh--maybe I'll try that again. Please...suggestions, or advice...

I have Comcast and HDMI with mine.. have you pressed the power button on your comcast DVR/cable box (mine is 6412 series III motorola).. then press menu to bring up the contrast settings.. I set the first line to 1080i, the next one down to 480p and all is well.. there are times when my kids are watching say ch 128 (noggin) it looks really good even in SD.. then i switch on ch 225 (discovery HD) and get a real treat usually

Its on the back of the set.. lower middle i believe.. in a square.

Taking a poll here.. or maybe i should post one ... how many use Dynamic mode, rather than Standard or even Movie..

Again, I found movie mode too dark, colors way off.. I thought standard was better.. then i turned on Dynamic (and calibration aside).. even with contrast at 100 and sharp at 75.. i thought it looked really good, i then tweaked the greens so color is on 38 and i think i may have found a mode that "pops"..

All this is quite contrary to the Avical starter settings or my calibration disc results (calibration disc was closer, but contrast was 74 or so)..

Anyone care to list their settings (6187S), 61" version only if possible.

UPDATE: Made a seperate thread just for the 6187S in case anyone wants to contribute (settings only).

Actually, yeah.. after finally having more time with it i did.. lowered color to 38.. and G51.. looks more natural now.. also went from Standard mode to Dynamic.. left contrast on 100 and sharp on 75 and i really think the picture does look better.. also set a few of those mode enhancer things to auto or DNIe to ON too..

Yes the xx87S line has a silver strip, and the xx89S is all black.

At least all of the ones I've had have had it.

Yep, that's it but unless that picture was zoomed in considerably, mine is nowhere near that big...haha. Also, when sitting on the couch you can't really see it.

ok, well i've had this set now 6months. Ups and downs. Overall i don't regret the swap out from the 5679. I do have this nagging static prizm rainbow thing on the screen about 1/3 of the way up in the center maybe an inch or so to the left, looks like a "7" its also mirrored about 2 inches to the right as well . Anyone know what this is? it appears mostly on something dark w/ a light background.

I just had my 5087S make popping noises and die. No prelude, it just turned itself off, then i saw a big blue flash from the back, and heard a really loud popping/zapping noise. I've had problems with the black levels since i bought it (it was always too bright), i wonder if they are related?

I put in a service request to Samsung, so hopefully i'll have someone out here before the weekend. Anyone had their set die like that?

Hi, after reading this site for a few days and looking at the set at the store I went and bought one today hlt5687s. I got it home plugged everything and no picture!! It has sound but no kind of picture cant even see menu totaly black! It was time for me to go to work so i called a friend that is much more up to date on this stuff than me. had him come over while i was at work and see if he could figure anything out. he could not get any picture either so he called samsung and they had him try a few things then said it must have a bad bulb or led whatever so they said to take it back to the store and exchange for a new one tomorrow! i'm going to bed and cry!

I tried your settings under 'standard' mode on my 5689S, and thought it was very green/blue. Could you post the full list of your settings under dynamic like you did for standard? Would like to give those a shot myself.

I personally prefer dynamic. The whites are whiter and the blacks are blacker. Colors seem to pop more than movie mode. This may not be the movies color intent but I like the more vibrant colors. I also keep Dnie, DNR, Auto color turned on as well as it seems to make for a clearer, brighter more vibrant picture.

There is an option called "active color" i think that makes greens greener and blues blu-er. IF you have that on it may make those colors look exaggerrated. I only like to have in on when watching soccer as the grass looks greener and the ball stands out more.

I got a HL-T5687S being delivered tomorrow and I am off work but none of my buddies will be around during the day. Is the 5687 even enough to handle for one guy? I just need to be able to get it out of the box and onto the stand.

ITs possible but risky. I have the hlt6189s and I picked it up myself. Its too large to get your arms around. If you stand in the back and put your one hand underneath the piece that bulges out (this is where all the wieght will be centered) and then one hand on the top of the frame (to stabalize) then tilt the tv backwards and lift you can lift it. The 61 is 75lbs so the 56 would be a little little.

OF course you need to have enough strength in your one arm to lift the weight and your other hand has to be good to stabalize it. You also have to have good balance because I could see people easily loosing their balance or grip. But it can be done. I also got impatient and didn't want to wait for a friend so i did it myself.

You only lifting it for a few seconds to get it to the stand so its no that difficult. Only issue is the bulk/size of the unit and not the weight.

The other option would be to put a table or something in front of your stand that is about the same height. Have the delivery guys put the TV on the table. After you unbox it you could more easily move it to the stand. Althought you might not be able to slide the box off the TV if you have low ceilings.

Thanks. Unfortunately the delivery company's policy is only like to the door. I have picked up my old HL-P5063W off the stand and put it on the ground by myself okay but yeah picking one off the ground and aiming for the stand might be a little different.

MY delivery guys policy was only to front door, but he was willing to bring it inside, i didn't even have to ask. You could also tip the guy 20 bucks if you want him to help you bring it in and get it on the TV. Offering him a drink and 20 bucks may get him to help you out.

Hey guys, this is my first post here so I apologize for any silly questions. I glanced through the first page of this thread and it was mostly very helpful, however I don't know if i'm going to be able to thumb through all 187 pages any time soon hehe..

I just picked up a HL-T5687S and it's my first HD set ever. I originally got it to match with my PS3. But all this talk about HDMI 1.2/1.3 and how PS3 is HDMI 1.3, and what cabling I should purchase to match/settings/calibrations, so on and so forth. I'm trying to get a better understanding of what I should be purchasing with my setup to optimize picture and quality.

I currently have my PS3 running to the TV with a Monster Cable 8ft Ultra 800 cable. I really have no idea where to find out if my tv has 8 bit, 10 bit, 120hz or not, 1.3 or not, and what cable should be the cabling of choice for my HD DVR and PS3? I also have a Hewlett Packard DV9260NR with HDMI and have no way of finding out what version HDMI that is either.

Again, I apologize for the silly questions, but if anyone is willing to help, I'd really appreciate it. It's alot to understand all at once but i'm doin my best!!

Thinking about getting this tv but I have a few concerns. I would appreciate it if you owners could give me your thoughts.

1. My main concern is uniformity. In alot of the pictures I've seen in this thread it seems that the corners of the are much darker than the rest of the screen. I don't know if it's the tv that is causing that or simply the way to image turned out with the camera. Cnet said that there is a bright spot in the middle which I think I can live with but those dark corners really bother me.

2. How is it for gaming? I was thinking of getting a LCD instead but I keep hearing things about motion blur on them that have turned me off. How does motion blur compare on these DLPs compared to the new LCDs like the XBR4.
