I haven't tried anywhere close to all 500 of my SD DVD's, but I still have compiled a list of 27 movies with major playability issues on this player.

I update my list regularly and submit it to Samsung. By the way, I believe the last firmware (2.0) caused a majority of the issues with the movies because there are a few on my list that played fine when I first got my player and was waiting for the 2.0 release so I could watch FF:ROTSS on Blu-Ray.

I think it would be useful to us if you could post your list. I watched the standard definition DVD of Live Free or Die Hard last night (rented from Netflix) and it froze repeatedly on my 1200. It started at 53:09 into the unrated version of the movie. I had to constantly fast forward or back to get the Samsung to start playing again.

Give me a day or so to fine tune my list (ie: my wife and I will be watching some movies this weekend, so I may add to the list). It is a known issue that there are many freezes at layer changes etc. so I will only list movies that either don't play or freeze repeatedly making it nearly unwatchable on the player.

I'll start the list in a new thread, and update my initial list as you guys report your problems (especially if I can confirm it from my library of movies). Also, my collection is basically most of the new releases since 2001 with only a few that are dated before then (i only buy new releases of movies that I haven't seen before which is why this player is so frustrating to me). I really would like if anybody can post issues with pre-2001 releases when I start the thread.

I have a feeling this list could get pretty long if we add all issues for all movies, so we'll keep it only in the "Unwatchable" category.

I have already started a new thread, anyone is welcome to add to it. I have sent the link to samsung several times.

My latest e-mail to Samsuck:

Sony

Title Manufacturer Released
BDP-S1 Firmware Update (v3.60) Sony December 20, 2007
BDP-S2000ES Firmware Update (v3.50) Sony December 20, 2007
BDP-S300 Firmware Update (v3.70) Sony December 20, 2007
BDP-S301 Firmware Update (v3.70) Sony December 20, 2007
BDP-S500 Firmware Update (v3.50) Sony December 20, 2007
PlayStation 3 System Software Updates (v2.10) Sony December 18, 2007

Seems, Not all the others are having the same problems, or they're at least better then you at catching up. You should put a disclaimer that says "This player does not play new releases because by the time we offer support with new firmware the title will no longer be a new release" Sucks that all my friends and family have seen POTC3 on their regular dvd players and I have to plug my ears if they talk about the movie because I havent seen it yet although I payed a lot more money for my samsuck blu-ray player.

But, what do you care...

I'm on the phone with Samsung CS right now. The rep tells me that there should be new firmware out by the end of next week that will "solve all my problems." OK. (I'll believe it when I see it.) At that point I began my list of problems with SD discs. The fellow has me on hold now to look up these other issues.... Anyone have any questions they want me to ask when I come off hold?

EDIT: Nathan at CS told me they received an email on Monday (12/18) saying that new firmware was on the way in about "a week and a half." That's the basis for his telling me that we'd see an update by the end of next week.

After he had me do a reset of my player, with no luck getting Vertigo to load , he also gave me a transaction number and told me to call back on Monday to get someone in Tier 2 for help with the SD issues. Apparently Tier 2 doesn't work on weekends. Rank has its privileges, I suppose.

FWIW, Nathan was very courteous.

No luck - I just missed the 30 day return policy. They did say they're getting A LOT of unhappy customers looking to return the player. Evidently all that we can do is contact Samsung under the 1-year manufacturers warranty. Problem is, since some discs do work, is the issue (as far as Samsung is concerned) that of the player or the new discs? Has anyone brought theirs in under a warranty claim?

LOST BD:

The bonus disc freezes about 1:05 minutes after I click on one of the extras, I can only turn off the player using the power button on the player & I have to hold it down for a few seconds. I have tryed "Access Granted" & "Lost on Location", both freeze the player.

Any one else having this problem?

Never mind now it is working after 5 tries & 2 days

Just tell them the player won't pillar box 4:3 SD DVD's and won't play 1080p/24fps without lip synch issues for BD's. Those issues exist with all discs, AFAIK.

I have been patient with this BD-P1200 FW situation for Pirates of the Car.: At World's End because my Disc is under the Christmas Tree and I assumed an update would be availible by Xmas. That and the fact that the last FW issue with Fantastic Four: Silver Surfer was solved with an update that not only allowed me to play SS but also corrected my freeze problem with Deja Vu. Which made me quit happy. But now I find Samsung is taking awhile to get this new update out and I will have to wait to watch POC. If they can iron out the many problems of which I am reading (Live Free or Die Hard, etc.) then I am willing to wait longer. But I must mention that I also own a Toshiba HD-A2 and I have received 2 CD firmware update discs in the mail over the past 3 weeks without even knowing they were available. They are automatically sent to all registered Toshiba HD DVD owners. I think the point is this is a new technology that has glitches. Problems we all have to live with no matter what format. But there is a proper way to handle these recurring problems and Toshiba seems to understand that. Samsung on the other hand doens't. I don't think it is out of the question to expect a manufacturer to be proactive and consumer conscious. And it seems this is an example of the right and wrong way to handle these things.

Well here is my first issue with an SD DVD. Polar Express was a series of audio dropouts and one lock up. a quick rewind fixed that but what a bummer. I may have to switch to useing my HD-A30 rather than my 1200 for SD playback due to WAF. Man the PQ on the 1200 is awesome though.

Wow! to my surprise Rush Hour 3 is playing great so far! It must be Christmas!
Just finished watching first disc of boxed special edition SD of "Titanic." No issues. The PQ is wonderful. Beautiful transfer and the 1200 upconversion yields superb color and detail. This is why the machine is such a heartbreaker. When it works, wow. When it doesn't, well.... I must say, though, that my wife is used to early adoption woes and hasn't said one snarky word about the 1200. A great wife!

Yeh right. They told me the same thing about a month ago. And guess what, there's no new firmware.

I can just hear the Samsung CSR: Oh you wanted a new FW we thought changing the date made it new. Doesn't it?

I had a claim when the drawer refused to open and using they're express return I had a new unit in 2 days.

Well, maybe, but she knew the job was dangerous when she took it. Actually, she told me last night that it would be cool to have a T-shirt that said "I Married An Early Adopter." I think she knows some other women in a similar predicament. A business opportunity!

Gardo - I am with you on that one...wife and I watched the first 3 episodes of "The Unit" on DVD last night and everything was perfect...this was right after the Polar Express issues. Very frustrating.

On the other hand my wife must have wifi and an auto update setting...I don't know what changed but she must have had new firmware in the last 3 days. Maybe I should just enjoy it while it lasts. Great woman but like the 1200 she can really flake out at times. LOL

I watched Polar Express SD DVD on the 1200 just last week.

OK, rant alert.....

I have been a big supporter of this player. I think it has a great picture and does a wonderful job with upconverting my SD DVD's. I don't have many, 25 or 30, mostly special editions and boxed sets with special audio and video treatments (Superbit and such). So far I have had problems on two blu rays, Kingdom of Heaven and Robocop. KOH was a mess, full of freezes and stutters. RC was less so.

I just got through watching the 2003 special edition directors cut of Alien. It froze 3 times and had about a dozen audio drop outs. Now I can almost understand problems with BR media. I am willing to overlook it and give Samsung the benefit of the doubt. But there is absolutely no reason for any SD disc to not play flawlessly on this machine. If it plays on a regular DVD player surely to God it can play on this one.

I always told myself that even if this player sucked with future Blu Ray releases and Samsung bailed out on us and no longer provided firmware upgrades, at least I had an outstanding upconverting player on which I could watch my SD collection for several years. Now I am not so sure.

Samsung should be ashamed of themselves. The last firmware has caused documented problems with stutters and lip sync issues after a pause. Maybe it is also affecting other things as well? These bozos need to get their act together. Anytime you complain about anything all you get from them is jibberish or a request to send the player in for repair. I for one think it is all firmware related. Am I out in left field on this one? Do my issues with KOH, RC and now the SD version of Alien warrant me sending the player in for a "repair"?

Rant off.....

Dear Santa...

Please ensure that Samsung's so called Customer Service groups in both Canada and the US, along with thier firmware engineers back in South Korea are on the naughty list and get lumps of coal in thier respective stockings.

Also if you could please have the elves fast track us a more robust, and stable firmware for our Samsung Blu-Ray players so we can finally watch POTC:AWE, we'd really appriciate it. Other things to deal with would include stuttering in selected SD DVD titles and poor PCM audio quality and level through the 5.1 analogue outputs, just to name a few issues.

Thanks.

G.

I don't really think that Samsung gets it!Early adopters tend to be the "Gospel spreaders" when it comes to electronics.....I mean, how many people come and ask you for advice when they are in the dark about a possible elctronic purchase?? I have guys and gals constantly asking me for info....and I am sure that many on this board are in the same boat...
Does'nt Samsung realize that buying decsions can be immensly influenced by the experiences we are subjugated to...be they bad or good..??I am willing to wager that 90% of the posters in the AVS fourms have influenced a buying decision...or were aksed for thier opinions from people new to certain areas of electroncics..
Not only will Samsung suffer from the "Bad-mouthng" of the 1200.....but future possible purchases will be affected.....
I like the player......it's the red-headed step-child treatment we are all getting from Samsung that really irks me......If this lack of caring continues..I will never purchase one of thier products again...I feel that if they cannot support thier BD players....this attitude prevails with all the products they market..

It is true. I have influenced quite a few decisions. My influence only goes so far. The people I know only care about use-ability, and since I have a problem with this Samsung player, and no problems with either of my HD DVD players they assume that ALL Blu-Ray is junk.

These firmware problems for this player not only affect Samsung, but Blu-Ray as a whole. You would think that the Blu-Ray backers would try to avoid serious problems like this. Especially since the war is far from decided, and the other format is generally cheaper to adopt.
