It's solely due to their pathetic level of support for this player that whenever anyone asks me for purchase advice (and many people do, as I'm the "tech guy" for my family, friends and coworkers) that I ensure they do not buy anything from Samsung.

I honestly don't know what they think they're hiding.

I guess I have missed it. Are you saying that original firmware is better for DVD-video discs? Is it proved? Should I search this thread?

Yes. Apparently the original firmware has almost zero issues with DVD playback. The downside is it's then a horrible BD player. If you're looking to have great DVD do not update until you see a firmware upgrade that fixes the current issues with DVD playback (this will prob never happen BTW).

Playback of standard DVD was broken in an early firmware update and never fixed. I don't recall which version, so you'd have to read through the thread to find it.

I just got BD Hurt Locker. With version 2.7, it spins a bit and then is ejected with the message "This disc cannot be played". Typical.

I rented the 2012 blu-ray disc, and the performance with firmware version 2.7 was marginal. There were sporadic instances of menu choices overlaying each other in error. In addition, when fast forwarding or fast reversing during playback, the progress timer that covers about the lower one-third of the screen does not disappear when reverting to straight playback. I had to stop the movie and reload the disc, and then could only skip forward or back in whole chapter increments.

Last weekend I watched:

2012 used the ff and rev features and had no problems

Zombieland
Love Happens

All played with no problems.

I watched the Hurt Locker about a month ago and at that time I was running 2.6 and had no problems.

Yes, without question and the original firmware player was reviewed favorably by Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity. Another possibility if you want a Samsung Blu-ray player for exclusive DVD-V playback is the BD-P2500/2550. It also uses Silicon Optix Reon, offers the feature to force proper aspect ratio with 4:3 DVD, doesn't have audio dropouts at chapter breaks and in my opinion is the second best DVD-V player among all under $500 Blu-ray players. It is also much better than the BD-P1200 for Blu-ray and a full-featured Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player. That isn't saying much, it is in fact a crappy Blu-ray player as there is a long way from the BD-P1200 to be a good Blu-ray player. Because the BD-P2550 is not a good Blu-ray player, despite being fairly recent and with great features, it sells for low prices now. I recently lost out on an eBay auction at $78, second high bid.

Planet 51 fails to play with 2.7. I give up, and will buy a different player - and never another Samsung product.

I installed 2.7 today and the above 4 plays.
There is not a single title, (that I want to watch), is unplayable.

What does broken look like?

Stuttering on chapter changes and very long freezes on layer changes, mainly. There may have been some other issues, too, but I don't recall. My 1200 has been sitting in a closet for some time.

Got a red screen saying requires firmware update, downloaded to cd, updated
and now Avatar plays .

Anyone else having a problem dwnldng this firmware. I click, it starts without giving me a choice of where to save it. Some temp dir that I then can't find !

It seems when I get to a new chapter in the movie, the timeline display comes on with the name of the chapter. So far, I can't seem to disable it. So far, a little annoying. But the picture quality is excellent.

I'm running 2.7 Avatar played with no problems, but after I paused the movie for too long, the movie stopped and when tried to play again, got the red message needing a firmware update. Turned off the player and inserted movie again, I was able to go to the chapter and continued watching the movie.

Excellent picture... I'll be updating to 2.8 today...

After updating to 2.8 saw no noticeable increase in performance with Avatar. The scenes select still does not display the icon picture thumbnail in the main center box but that is not a big deal. My 1200 also displays the chapter name when the movie is playing, its distracting.

I was just so impressed that it played the movie under the 2.7 firmware in the first place. Now if only Samsung would update the UP-5000, that would be great.

I still won't get mine out of the closet but that certainly means the player is much better than it was.

Just installed the latest firmware fix via internet and still can't watch Avatar. Does the same thing, starts loading and then just get interactive rotating accros the display on the player. Any suggestions?

Try doing a factory reset. Push and hold for 5 seconds the skip forward button on the front panel of the unit. This will reset everything (except FW version) back to factory settings.

Just installed the latest firmware via disc download. 'Avatar' would not play prior, now it does.

Looks like the new firmware does work after all. I let the "interactive" rotate accross the player display and eventually it loaded and went to the "play" movie screen. Just takes a very long time to load this BD title.

Yes, A VERY LONG TIME indeed! I did not see a THX intro when starting the BD disc. The menus are very limited. While watching the movie, I would see information on the screen at long intervals. It appears to be a notice when each chapter/scene division occurs. I found no facility to either turn such a feature on or off in the disc menu. I've never seen such a feature before. What am I missing?

You see that information if you skipped through the chapters(>>) to indicate the time mark and the starting chapter frame.
Kind of makes me wonder if the disc is being played some how by the player accessing the chapter advance.

The THX thing plays after the end credits.

I went back to 2.7. The chapter timeline popping up as chapter changeover happened while playing the entire film was getting too annoying.

Hopefully Samsung can step away from 3d for a minute and fix this with 2.81.

While I probably won't go back to 2.7, I do have the same issues when playing Avatar. I'm sure we can expect Samsung to get us an update to the firmware by Christmas...

Hi, not an owner of a p1200 or active here, but I have ran into an issue with 2 titles with the new f/w for the BD-UP5000 combo player that have what I think weew the exact same problems on the p1200 a couple years ago and are now manifesting themselves on the 5K. You may want to check these and make sure they still play; Sunshine is back to the infinite loop right before the menu that never loads and Pirates 3 gets stuck at the language selection screen before the skull menu, you have to skip using disc menu and then the menu options do not load at the skull and you can't start the movie.

Curious if the p1200 has these problems back now that there has been a recent update for it as well.

The samsung BD-P1200 is dead while updating firmware 3 days ago.
