Very interesting, since I've been thinking of adding the A20 to my 1200. Do you have any idea of whether the A20 is as good as the XA2 (for HD DVD only, since the 1200 can handle the upconversion of sd dvd)?
I believe the XA2 and 1200 are pretty much identical when it comes to SD DVD upconversion (same Reon processor).

That's why I'm not interested in buying both of them. I will have a 1200, so would be interested in a Tosh only for HD DVD; and I THINK I'm understanding that it is ~ the same as the XA2 for that purpose. I would of course like to hear from anyone that really knows.

If it matters to anyone I just spent 30 minutes on the phone with a gentleman named Jose in level II technical support at Samsung. He advised me that the Samsung WILL output DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD via bitsream in it's current form without any firmware updates. He also said that Samsung has not yet announced any plans to decode these formats internally, but they can be sent via bitsream.

Boy I hope you are right because the new Panasonic is coming out for a couple hundred dollars cheaper with DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD built in. It even comes with 5 blu-ray tiltes. The only benefit to owning our 1200's will be the HQV chip and HDMI 1.3 support!
Well the Panasonic only does DTS-HD HR not MA. There are only a few titles with DTS HR but there are plenty that utilize MA. I was assured several times that it will support this so we'll see.
The HQV chip is worth it. I have both the 1200, and the Pioneer HD1, and I prefer the image of the Samsung. I had the old Panasonic, until it broke. and, from memory, I don't think it looked as good as the Pioneer. I don't think the new Panasonic is much different from the old.

I read that they are just repackaging the BD10 with a firmware upgrade for the additional audio support and calling it a BD10A!
Probably a stupid question, but I assume the 5.1 issue applies only to advanced audio over HDMI, and DTS-ES discrete over coax (on SD-DVD) will still come through as 6.1 on the 1200 over bitstream?

That is correct. I used to own the BD10 and I never got to use the Dolby TrueHD (as there are very few titles that have this) and I only got to use the DTS-HR once and found it to be underwhelming compared to uncompressed PCM. I'm really after DTS Master Audio. And according to Jose Mr. Level II support at Samsung I can get it via bitsream when connected to one of the new hdmi 1.3 receivers.

Yes you can. I've personally tried this with Gladiator (one of my favorite demo movies) and it did DTS-ES 6.1 perfectly.

Not to mention that you get 5 free great ( in my opinion ) movies with the new panny. I too may play the 30 day game as I recieved my 1200 today from Fedex. I did a quick search though, and nobody that I can find has the new Panny.

I have the "lower end" Toshiba A2 and it's great. My tv is 1080i and NOT 1080p so it works great for me. Excellent picture on my Toshiba 56" DLP. Picture wise, all the Toshibas look the same, it depends on what you want or need for audio I guess. And just recieved my 1200 today, but won't get to hook it up for a few days .

That's what I've heard too ! And when it's available in June, I'll be picking up the new Onkyo TX-SR875 AVR. It too will have the HQV chip in it , one of the first receivers to have it.

Enjoy my friend . As I don't really use my receiver for video switching I'll be picking up the 805. This is the best news I've heard all month .

Basically yes, but for $600.00 AND you get 5 great movies inside with the 10A. Two of those movies are both of the Pirates movies

Well, I have a 1080p display (RS1 projector) and if I get a HD DVD player I would thus like to get one that puts out 1080p; and I think the A20 is the most 'basic' one that does this. Many people say, though, that sending the RS1 1080i is just as good as sending it 1080p; I guess I'm just being anal about it!

Thanks for the info. I figured this was the case, but just wanted to make sure. I am now in a dilema between this and the PS3......
Ok, I've got a question for the other 1200 owners here.
I got my 1200 today and have already run into a very serious problem with the *first* Blu Ray title I played on it!
I put in Dreamgirls and it started up and played just fine. I could change audio, subtitles, go to the menu, go back, etc. The problem starts when I hit the 'popup menu/title menu' button, nothing pops up (I know what it *should* look like - I played the disc just fine on a ps3 when I had it briefly) *and* the player completely locks up! The movie keeps playing, however ALL buttons stop working! I can't pause, I can't fast forward, I can't stop, nothing! The movie just keeps playing. The hard buttons on the front of the player don't even work.
Everything else seems to work just fine, so this seems like an odd problem to have with my specific player. It seems like a firmware bug to me, but I also can't believe this wouldn't have already been discussed before.
Does anyone else have this problem?

I understand wanting and needing 1080p. How big is your screen ? If it's like 10 feet, then 1080p would be best in my opinion. The A20 is what, $100.00 more than the A2 ? Not much, but then again, I got my A2 for $299.00 total

Patrick...I just got my 1200 today, but won't get around to hooking it up for a few days. But, I did have a similar problem with my Toshiba A2. Since all the new BD and HD players don't react as fast as a regular SD dvd player when you hit a button on the remote, if you hit one, then immediatly another before the first button takes effect, the player freezes up.

My only soultion, for better or worse, was to unplug the player for a minute. Plugged it back in and no problems since, and that was a month ago and maybe 20 movies. Just remember to hit one button, then WAIT until it has done what it's supposed to do before you hit another button. Good luck.

Screen is 126" diag, 9x16 (110"W), sitting ~ 13 ft back (~ 1.4 SW), so yes, 1080p looks spectacular. Amazon has the A20 for ~ 370 the last time I looked. But since I'm just getting a Sammy 1200, I think I'll just play with it for a few months before seeing about adding an HD DVD player. Right now, though, I think the A20 would be the one since I don't need one for its upconverting performance (i.e., the Sammy 1200 and XA2 do that ~equally superbly). Would just be interested in HD DVD performance, and to get 1080p this would dictate the A20, at least at present.
Thanks for the reply, but I don't believe that is it. On the PS3 the popup/title button popped the sub-menu almost instantly with this title (and it has on any other player/blu-ray disc I've played with). Something's definitely wrong with my player, or with my player and this specific disc.

See update from the CNET review of this player - now I'm confused:

"(Update 05-11-07): We originally reported that the presence of HDMI 1.3 might mean that the BD-P1200 can pass the bitstream of Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD-Master soundtracks to forthcoming compatible receivers, but according to Samsung it cannot. The BD-P1200, like all other Blu-ray players aside from the PlayStation 3, has no support for those highest-resolution next-gen audio formats."

Can't wait to find out for sure, its the only thing preventing me from buying this player.
CNET's statement is in accord with my understanding - the real issue is whether Samsung will implement lossless decoding via firmware upgrade, as the hardware is reportedly capable.
Well, I was told by Samsung it would, so I guess only time will tell. TO be honest with you this whole thing is so upsetting, I'm starting to not even care anymore.
