Help with my HD-A2KU

Having a little trouble with my new HD-A2KU. I have my player connected to my Pioneer PDP-R04U HDTV reciever, via an HDMI connection and a component video connection. My audio is supplied through an optical connection to my Onkyo reciever. Here's my problem. The HDMI connection by itself does not give me a picture, however my component connection does. When I unplug the component I don't recieve a picture through my HDMI connection. Also, When I try to play standard DVD's, they never seem to upconvert, the screen always says dvd will only play at 480I. I have gone through half of my DVD collection and have not been able to upconvert any of them. Is this because my HDMI connection isn't working properly? If my component connection is the only one working properly, does this explain why I can't seem to upconvert? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Seems to be a problem. I would exchange. I am currently running component and HDMI/DVI at 1080i with no problems.

With DVDs, it is upconverted to 1080i through HDMI only.

Through component connections, you will only see the native resolution. So if the disc is 480p, you will only be able to display 480p. If it is a 720p/1080i disc, you will display a 720p/1080i disc.

I have the HD-A2-K-TU with firmware upgrade.

Have you tried just using the HDMI connection? Maybe the player is defaulting to component video because you have both component and HDMI connected.

Thanks for the input superstorm. Your not to far from me, I'm in Harrisburg. It sounds to me like my HDMI connection is not working properly. After reading the manual it sounded really easy to hook up both the HDMI and the component and let it figure out which to use. When I pull the component connection, I can't seem to get a picture with the HDMI. I emailed toshiba support today and have not heard back from them yet. It sounds like you have the same player I have but with an upgrade. I sent my product upgrade card back in the mail today. Maybe an upgrade will be the answer.

Thanks for the input Robert. I tried removing the component but I can't seem to get a picture through the HDMI. On the back of my Pioneer plasma reciever I have 4 different inputs. There are two HDMI inputs #1 and #3 and I have tried them in both with no luck. The HDMI cable is the only one that will upconvert s - dvds correct?

I know I could not get a picture with my HD-XA1 when I got it via HDMI. I then figured out that the player defaults to component and you have to change it to HDMI in the player. Not sure how the A2 works. Something to consider.

Was it a change you were able to make through the setup menu of your player?

I know there is a "video" button on the remote for the A1 that will change from component to HDMI. I don't think the A2 has that button.

On the A1, XA1, there is a button on the remote that says "V. Output". You have to push this for it to go off the Component output default and get to HDMI.

Not sure how the A2 works.

if I were you I'd call Toshiba and not wait for an email. Hopefully there is a logical explanation or a bad unit and not something inheritently wrong with the rest of your equipment.

If I remember correctly from reading the manual on the A2. I believe the HDMI and component outputs can be active at the same time. I don't know if there is the ability to manually switch video output via a button on the remote. IIRC, once you plug in your HDMI cable into the A2 and HDTV....you should get a picture without having to go into the setup menu of the A2 at all.

Your right. That is what the manual says. It says they can both be plugged in and active a the same time. I'm not quite sure what the advantage of having both plugged in is. I thought the HDMI cable was all you really needed.?

I have hdmi going to my PJ and component going to my Sony CRT which can handle 480i.

I had a similar problem with mine today. The FW upgrade fixed it.
