HDDVD Suddenly Not Playing - giving me Graphics Card Incompatibility, Error=12?

By leveraging all the great info on the AVS forums I'm assembled a HTPC that got HD DVD up and running for me, but suddenly PowerDVD 7.1 is telling me that my graphics driver is incompatible and I get an error=12.

System is:
Dual Core e4300, overclocked to 2.61ghz
Asrock 775 Dual 880Pro mobo
2 GiG Corsair DDR2 800Mhz
nVidia 7600GT, 256Mb
Power DVD 7.1
AnyDVD HD

Can someone diagnose my problem? I did end up reinstalling the graphics drivers and software - so not sure if that's an issue. All other aspects of the graphics card seem to be wroking fine. AnyDVD seems to be reading the disks ok, but when Power DVD launches, I get the error message when it tries to read the disk. I've tried a few disks such as Serentiy and King Kong (both of which I originally had working fine). Any advice most welcome. Thanks in advance.

Are you running Vista or XP?

I believe that PowerDVD has to be reinstalled if you change video drivers.

Guys. Thanks for the questions/help so far.

I'm running XP, and just to clarify, the drive I'm using is the XBox 360.

I picked up the EVGA 7600GT video card a few days ago (replaced an older 9800pro AGP card). The PowerDVD software (which was installed before I got the new video card) worked fine after the card install and drivers install. Hence, I didn't have to reinstall PowerDVD at that point. I'd be happy to try reinstalling PowerDVD again, but I paid for the software over a month ago, hence teh URL I downloaded it from may no longer be active. I still have my license key in my email though.

I should mention that yesterday I was also playing with my bios settings to get the most out of my processor (needed to get the overclock high to play the DVDs without any image staggering). Hence, maybe something might have happened there..but not sure what that could have been.

I'm keen to hear more advice on this issue, as I've no HD DVD until I resolve the issue. Thanks in advance!

Search through the PowerDVD Ultra thread. The "Incompatible Graphics Driver" problem is mentioned several times. The solution is to enable hardware acceleration, which doesn't work for ATI cards, but should work for your 7600GT. However, hardware acceleration is also reported to cause stuttering on Nvidia cards. Ripping the discs to the hard drive first with AnyDVD with also solve the problem.

Thanks Sigma957. I'll try your suggestion when I get home. Strange thing is that the hardware accelleration appeared to be greyed out for me with this card, so I wasn't able to change it, and I did have the disks working just about ok (no stuttering) earlier on yesterday. Anyway, I'll take a look. That's a good tip on ripping the disk to my drive first - I'll try it.

Thanks,
John.

Well, I tried the hardware acceleration thing, and to no avail. I get the incompatible graphics card error whether I have hardware acceleration turned on or not.

Also, when I have hardware acceleration turned on, the colors on regular DVDs through PowerDVD are thrown completly off balance - very strange. When I dial back hardware acceleration (via control panel/display/settings/advanced) or if I turn off hardware acceleration off, the colors go back to normal again.

I still can't get HD DVDs to play though as my card is still recognized as incompatible.

One other thing to check - are you using an analog (VGA) or digital (DVI/HDMI) connection? If you are using a digital connection, then you could be having problems because the video card and/or monitor are not HDCP compliant.

I'm using a dvi/vga adaptor to connect to a VGA cable which connects to my analog CRT projector. This was not an issue a few days ago, and I was getting image just fine on this card. Also, I had thought that AnyDVD HD was able to get me past all such HDCP/HDMI requirements...

You said it was all working until you overclocked it. I would either check your PCI bus and make sure it's locked 33/66 or so... make sure your card is booting in PCI-E mode etc check everything in bios. 7.1 may have worked in the begining but it's very fickle when non HDCP displays are involved good luck!

Do you still get the error if you rip the disc with AnyDVD and play it off the hard drive? Try using PowerDVD 7.3 with hardware acceleration on. Many people report that this configuration works.

Thanks guys for the extra input. I'll try dialing back my overclock a bit when I get home to see if that changes anything. I do have PCI-E selected as my primary graphics driver in my bios. I'll tinker a bit and see if it changes anything though.

Sigma957, I did rip Serenity to my HD, although I confess I might be missign something in terms of how to play it with PowerDVD. I selected the folder 'Serenity' for PowerDVD to play and I just get a blank screen and the program freezes.

I'll see can I 'upgrade' my 7.1 to 7.3 too (I trust my liscense key will work for a 7.3 download).

Thanks.

Try the 94.20 drivers that's what I'm using at the moment, use driver cleaner and get all your ATI stuff out of your registry in safe mode. Reboot and load the 94.20 drivers you can get'em at Guru3d. The reason I'm using these is because 91.31's have a bad shimmer, and the betas at nZone don't clock well.

Hi Guys:
I ended up removing nVidia graphics drivers, reinstalled the same Forceware drivers and then I now manage to get past the 'incompatible graphics driver' error, and I get to the HD Disk menu. However, everything is really staggered (the image stuttering) and my processor is running at between 90 and 100%. Not sure why. Days earlier with the same hardware I was at about 60-70% with no stuttering. Argh, it's like I fix one thing and another breaks.

A special thanks to Nimo for that 94.20 driver tip. I downloaded it and now all is well. I no longer have any image stuttering. Serenity runs at about 35% CPU power, and King King runs at about 88%, and gets as high as 98% CPU processing power - crazy close to 100%, but not quite. It works a treat. The image on my CRT projector is scary good...

Thanks!!!

That cpu usage for KK is insane. All I can tell you is that I get 40% average but with Guru 3D 96.89, C2D 6600, PD 7.3. Or maybe you should try upgrading to 7.3 after all (did you?) and try again with current drivers. Or maybe try to de-overclock your CPU to standard speed and start from there.

I'm finding PowerDVD is now crashing every few minutes as I play Babel movie. Still trying to diagnose if it's PowerDVD (we know it's a buggy/beta product), the fact that my processor may be at it's limits (my e4300 overclocked to 2.6ghz can reach close to 100% cup processing power on some disks), my processor may be overheated - it reaches about 38degrees according to my motherboard monitor utility, or something else??(Maybe my 7600GT is overheating??). Has anyone experienced similar crashing and resolved it?

Thanks again for helping be solve this difficult puzzle - who knew that just playing disks should be so difficult..

As craptacular as this piece of software is I don't get crashes while playing HD stuff H.264 is another topic. I suggest you check your oc if your not setting default values and testing your system at stock speeds, otherwise the conversation is academic at this point.
