Plasma or DLP? Father's day present

Hi,
I'm currently looking for a father's day gift because my Dad watches a ton of tv on a 60 inch 10 year old RPT which only displays 480i. I think it's time he upgraded and with Father's day coming up, I think that would be the perfect gift.

I am looking for the best display of 3d imaging. I've heard that the plasma's greatly outdo LCD displays in this area but haven't heard about how good it is compared to RPT's. My budget is $5000.

Right now I'm looking at the KDS-R70XBR2 and keeping an eye out on how the new samsung rpt displays do. For the plasma's, I've heard great things about panasonics displays.

The tv will be used for sd, hdtv, hd-dvd, blue-ray, and games.

Trying to decide between 58" and 70" is soooo difficult but in the real world I imagine this is a viable question for many shopping in your price range. If room size is large enough perhaps the XBR2 is the best choice but comparing the 60"XBR2 and the 58" Panny then I lean heavily towards the Panny. If 1080p is a serious consideration then the XBR2 is the clear option.

Nero: Thanks, lol.

Andy: Any upgrade should be 100x better than the RPT he has now, but I don't want to give him a minuscule tv that he'll miss his old tv for watching sd programming on. The family does watch movies on it though and in that regard I want a good display with great black levels. How are the XBR2's "3d imaging?" And can an RPT be isf calibrated in much the same way they calibrate the plasma and lcd displays? Also, which rpt technology is best? I'm still reading through this entire thread for info, but it's taking me a while: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=730418

DLP will give you *the best bang for the buck* while a PDP will give you the *coolness* factor.

For 5k you could pick up a 70 inch DLP for <$3,000 plus surround sound in a 1080p model.
The TH-58PZ700U plasma should be around $3,800 but its release date is a while off.

It really depends on your setup. What components are you going to be using? Are you going to be using an STB? Do you have an AVR/Surround Sound? If you go with a PDP are you planning on wall mounting it? What are the lighting conditions of the room? What is the viewing distance?

These basic questions should be answered before anyone makes any recommendations as they provide essential information needed to generate suggestions.

What components are you going to be using? Hopefully HDMI in the future with 360 Elite coming out, paired with the HD-DVD drive. But for now, HDMI from the Philips DVP5960.

Are you going to be using an STB? No, just straight from the wall, unless it's required by Comcast when I eventually order the HD Programming service.

Do you have an AVR/Surround Sound? No, for now the Internal speakers will have to do.

If you go with a PDP are you planning on wall mounting it? No, just a stand.

What are the lighting conditions of the room? The room can be dimmed with blinds. But their is a side door that glares the current tv, no blinds on it.

What is the viewing distance? 10 feet

Right now the current RPT is a 4:3 60 inch. Do you think the KDS-R60XBR2 would suffice for that viewing distance?

I think that you are going to be paying a premium for a Sony product that is not necessary superior to a Samsung or Mitsubishi display. I was in the market for a DLP last year and settled on the Samsung model. I was leaning towards the 73 inch Mitsubishi but was given a deal on the Samsung that I could not refuse. I do however prefer my PDP over my DLP for every day viewing but the DLP is amazing and the size for the money well it cant be beat.

Glare will be a major issue with a PDP.

BTW, the Sony is NOT a DLP set, it is a LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) micro display. These TVs are very similar to DLP displays but use LCD instead of *the mirrors* to render images.

If you have decided on a RPTV, as it sounds you are, you should move over to the RPTV forum.

Take a look at the 60" Pioneer plasmas too. PDP-6070 and PRO-1540HD.

Thanks, would you say Pioneer makes the best plasmas?

I went to Best Buy today and I really like the viewing angles on the plasma's opposed to the RPT's. So I'm pretty set on a 60+ inch plasma.

Also, when viewing a 60 inch (I think it was) Panny, I noticed squareulation (?) type of grain when something on the screen moved fast, what causes that and is it a problem with the display or signal? I looked at other plasma's displaying the same signal and didn't notice it.

Macroblocking is usually source related. It appears on cable or satellite HD signals that have been overly compressed. If it goes away when switching to good broadcast HD like CBS "THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN" then it was an inferior feed.

They are one of the top two in my opinion - the other being Panny. I don't know which one I'd say is better - they both run neck-to-neck in a race. Of course there are higher end sets like Fujitsu and Runco, but those cost even more.

Nothing personal ccbeachbum, but your question has no place in this thread. You need to start your own thread. Regarding the original OP. Your budget allows you a lot of room. My three choices would be Panasonic 58", Phillips 63", JVC 70". These should all be available for under $3500.

Seconded. If you're looking for that 3D "looking through a window" effect, the Pioneer delivers by the truckloads. Since he'll be watching broadcast mainly, the benefit of 1080p is minimal.

If he's used to a 63" set anything smaller no matter the technology will seem small after awhile. Costco has nice Mits diamond sets 65 & 73 that I would look at.

Go plasma.
Even with SD, it's the best choice out there.
65" will do nicely for him.

[Keep in mind the 4:3 to 16:9 ratio switch]

That's exactly what I'm looking for, that "3d image."

The Pioneer PDP-6070 looks perfect, but right now I'm thinking I should wait for the new pioneer's with 80% lower black levels: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=782695

I think I'll wait a couple months and see what happens.

Remember that bulbs will be an issue with any non-CRT rear projection TV. If your dad leaves the TV on for hours a day (I have friends who leave their TV on ~20 hours per day) a flat panel might be a good choice.
