Upconvert SD DVDs over component on my A2

Is there ANY way for me to enable upconversion over component? I backup most of the movies in my collection and I know that works, but I rent a ton of movies, so I need an option for al those. I can't stand having a $400 HD DVD player that won't even upconvert. The picture on my Mitsu 65311 is too good to get rid of. I bought it right before DVI/HDMI became standard. Are there any hacks, adapters, anything?

Man thats from like 2002.

I believe the A2 upconverts over component aswell. do you know what the max output of your TV is.

The A2 only upconverts DVDs that aren't protected by CSS. And for the OP, no, I don't know of anyway around that short of hacking the firmware.

Like i70x7 states, only some of the small companies will upconvert over component such as:

Anchor Bay
Dark Sky
Elite
Mondo Macarbro
Synapse
Passport
Classic Media

These small ones won't either:

VCI
Media Blasters Blue Underground
Kineo
Retromedia

All the majors will not.

There's a guy over at *************** who's working a device that will plug into our component connection (I have a Mit 65711) and give us DVI and will be HDCP compliant.

I realize that I'm esentially going to be forced to buy new bigscreens for my house simply to conform with some dumb copyright laws. Thanks a lot Congress or whomever. I'm perfectly happy with the picture on all my TVs but they don't have HDMI. I still can't believe someone hasn't developed an adapter or converter yet. I'm sure they will as soon as I buy my new sets

Or you are forced to "backup" your SD DVDs to DL DVD R's using a PC and DL burner. If you also reauthor it is a great way to get rid of intro commercials, trailers, etc in addition to "accidently" removing CSS.

In my OP I said that I backup my collection which then allows me to upconvert. It almost makes you want to "accidentally backup" the rentals so I can get the best picture.

So basically every DVD has the CSS protection and will not do 1080i with component for SD DVD's?

These companies "WON'T" upconvert 480p to 1080i thru component:

VCI
Media Blasters
Blue Underground
Kineo
Retromedia
This years Anchor Bay
All large companies such as Paramount, etc.

These companies "WILL" upconvert 480p to 1080i thru component

Anchor Bay
Dark Sky
Roan Films
Lumivision
Marengo Films
Alpha Video
Simitar
Triton
Barrel Entertainment
Elite
Mondo Macarbro
Discotek
Synapse
Passport Video
Classic Media
Mill Creek Entertainment

Will it upconvert anything over HDMI? Also, does the same thing go for the A3?

I wouldn't sweat it too much. I compared upconvert from the DVD player using HDMI vs. internal upconvert on my Samsung LCD using component. Really no visible difference. I'm using component now because I have more options for resizing the picture.

Honestly, I saw no improvement using HDMI with my TV. Your TV may be different but you are not going to get more than 480p resolution regardless of the uprez to "near hidef" claims.

you could make temperary copy of the DVD using DVD+RW media which can be used over and over. DVD+RW works fine on my A2.
