Official Sony VPL-AW15 Projector Thread - Page 3

I am running Sony 51A with unity gain 110" diag (96" wide) and looks bright enough. I even watch the sports with light on, no problem in standard mode, low lamp. AW15 is even brighter than 51A. If your primary use is to run the pj with some ambient light, then black level is not a concern and better look for some presentation pj's such as Optima 70 or Mitsu counter part with clear segment.

You know I think I am going to wait until Xmas and get myself a 1080P projector. I know there will be some serious deals going on by then.
I may give this projector a spin with a 1.5 gain screen perhaps I am still on the fence tough call between this and the Z-5 for myself.
projectorreviews has the aw15 review up
so what is the advantage of having the 1080p/24 if it is not a 1080p projetor?
Why isn't more info coming out on this(these) units. Aren't they due out soon. My HS10 needs a polarizer job, and I just as soon pick up a new projector then spend 300+ on a Polarizer and panel. I was hoping to wait until after these came out and got some owners feedback before making a decision.
should i change from my hs60 to the aw15?
I was about to buy the vpl-aw15 from wild digital com. but but the store rating is very bad.
that pre-order. i will keep looking for a good store. the price for wild digital was nice
u think i should roll the dice.
aw15 has to be brighter? is this the case?
susu2k aw15 lamp 165w uhp and hs60 is 130w uhp.so yes aw15 is brighter.you can go to
sony style.com aw10 and aw15 is up. i was thinking about getting it from sony but it will
cost about $100.00 for taxs and $30.00 ship.
So does any body know how 1080p/24 is an advantage on a 720p projector cause they boast it at sony style.
but it has only 1100 lumen. so its darker
post #73 of 1401
Reiteration from another post.

"I have had two HS series. One HS60 and one HS51A.
For some reasons one way or another, my current HS51A turned out to be brighter than HS 60 by a noticeable margin.
I feel it is unit to unit variation.

Running a unity gain 96" wide 16x9, I have no problem with brightness but it is always welcome if it can retain the same black level.
This unit is the only unit that can do close to my CRT setup in color and blacklevel.
Build quality is awesome and lens is tack sharp with zero abberations and no corner fall out and loss of resolution.
I would suggest potential buyers do their home work and give this unit a seriouss look.
I would read Art's review as a personal review only. He doesn't have proper equipment to do proper gray scale and I don't think he has capability to read lower contrast level to do a proper true black level reading. I might be wrong but the way he did gray scale on this unit was not the best way turning lower lumen than expected. My HS51A put out 300 lumen in dimmest mode with 150 hrs on the lamp and now with well over 300 hrs have not notice any change in lumen . Read cine4home report on this unit for more credible testing.
Overall HS60/51A/AW15 series are best LCD PJ out there. If one needs more lumen Panny AX100 is another LCD but do not expect 2000 lumen out of it. Itis more around 350 after D65 set up.
I get about 600 lumen in Dynamic with hi lamp with DI disabled out of the Sony HS5A."
1100 lumen is nothing jvc rs1 have 700 lumen and 200w uhp . go read review on it.
i have 719 optoma projector with 2000 lumen 200w uhp. 165w is brighter then 130w
post #75 of 1401
DLP's need more lamp power to produce the same lumen compared to LCD's.
AW15 is about 25% brighter than HS60 by specs.

Based on Ultimate AV report JVC producing about 450 lumen after calibration and 200 hrs on the lamp. Where did you read that JVC puts out 700 lumen after D65 calibration. That seems very hi for HT set up. It says its top lumen is about 16.5 FTL onto a 78" diag. 1.3 gain screen.
but i wanna use the projector only in eco mode for the 3000 hours lamp time... do you think that the aw15 is as bright in eco mode as the hs60 in normal mode?

I NEED THIS ANSWER! IF THIS IS THE CASE I WOULD IMMEDIATELY BUY IT! Because in fact, the picture from hs60 is bright enough in normal mode, but in eco mode it sucked on my screen.

what do you think?
You can run HS51a/60/AW15 with hi lamp in any mode, Cinema, Standard and Dynamic.
I am not sure if the lamp would last 3k hours in even low lamp but welcome to try. It is rated about 2k hrs in eco mode (low mode). I run it in both modes depending on the program and ambient light.
Sony typically designs their PJ's for contrlled light room as any true HT PJ would be.
If you really like your image very bright, you should consider a presentation PJ such as Mits 1000 with clear segment in the CW. HS51a is a lot brighter than my low hour mint CRT and that is enough for me.
hmm... the problem is that i dont want to use it in high lamp mode. and actually it should make 2500 to 3000 hours with eco mode. :/

but do you think its brights in eco mode than the hs60 was? or you think its even as bright in eco mode as the hs60 was in normal mode?

regards and big thx : )))

Buddy I have not seen the AW15 only Art has. So I have no idea.
I have read some use the Sony HS in hi lamp after about 1000 hrs. So be careful buying this projector if indeed the brightness is the primary parameter for you in PQ. I am just trying to help you. Get yourself a bright LCD or DLP.

Why not just get a higher gain screen if brightness is that important?

read my post i never post about calibration of jvc .700 lumen is specifications of jvc
brightness 700ansi and contrast 15000:1

I don't rely on what manufacturers say. It is only fair to compare apples with apples.
After calibration with about 200 hrs on the bulb could provide a little more meaningful information to all of us than spec's.

when ppl buy a pj it about manufacturers not calibration.u said art was wrong so if
we read a review about calibration what make u think the review is not wrong. when ppl buy a pj the store will not do a calibration on a pj. so u buy the pj take it home put 200 hrs on it then do a calibration. u work for a dealer or what and we are posting about aw15 not 50or hs60 .aw15 is not out so.
but you think it's as good as the panasonic? in fact color should be better. but i really hope brightness has been fixed :E

and very important: is it also brighter without dynaclear screen?

regards
You are asking unanswerable questions. I would love to know the answer too, as I am looking to upgrade my HS10 and would like a little more brightness. But we are going to have to wait to see for ourselves or wait for more reviews and actual user feedback.

BTW, I have the HS10 with a high power screen and the screen really brings the brightness up to an easily acceptable level. I can watch sports with some lights on, no problem.

Has the release date for the AW15 been announced?
it would be stupid to realease a projector that isnt even equal to the panasonic pt-ax100e.

which one would you buy? pana or sony if the price wouldn't matter?
Yes I did my calibration after 150 hrs. 500 hrs is best. Most ISFs suggest waiting a few hundreds and then calibrating it. I am an end user.
Comparing pj with manufacturer's brightness rating is far off than from a reputable reviewer such as WideScreen review, Ultimate AV or Cine4home. I am not a fan of Projector Review's Art. But he has his followers.
Susu, I haven't seen the Panny but I like sharpness and would probably go with the Sony if the Sony was dimmer but sharper. Provided the brightness was acceptable. I would probably have the Z5 right now, but I refuse to buy anything with a rebate.
