Hi-Res Audio - New Convert Here

I just got my Oppo 981 yesterday and was finally able to listen to some discs I've had for a while, but could only hear in 5.1 standard res.

This is what I had to listen to:

REM - In Time: The Best of REM (DVD-A)
Neil Young - Harvest (DVD-A)
Yes - Fragile (DVD-A)
Queen - A Night At The Opera - (DVD-A)

WOW. I am so in love with this format. I felt like I had yawned and cleared the pressure from my ears. It was absolutely amazing.

So I ordered some more discs. On the way:

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (SACD)
Steely Dan - Gaucho (DVD-A)
Philip Glass - Koyaanisqatsi (DVD-A)
Mickey Hart - Over The Edge and Back (DVD-A)
Aaron Neville - Believe (DVD-A)
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms (SACD)

I suppose this isn't the most needed thread in the world, but I had to share my enthusiasm with others whom I know can appreciate it. No single friend of mine would consider anything but itunes and ipods and Bose.

For SACD there are many reviews on www.sa-cd.net, though it is mostly classical music. It is a great source of info about various available SACD.

Congrats Baniels. You'll see lots of recommendations in recent posts for some great hi-rez titles. I'd like to tweak allsop's response a bit. "Mostly classical" does not tell the whole story. Yes, there is a ton of classical music on SACD, but there is a lot more variety out there on both SACD and DVD-A.

We all know there's not an infinite amount of rock for example, but there is still plenty of rock, lots of jazz, lots of other kinds of music. With rock, just a few off the top of my head, you can buy Elton John, Aerosmith, Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones, The Who, Bob Dylan, Stevie Ray, James Taylor, Boston, etc. etc. on SACD. On DVD-A, you can buy ELP, Neil Young, Chicago, Doobies, Porcupine Tree, Fleetwood Mac, etc. etc. For Jazz, a ton of Miles, some Coltrane, Adderley, Monk, Hancock, Blakey, Brubeck, Mingus, etc. etc. Not bad lists. Random titles like the Ladysmith Black Mambazo releases are outstanding. Plenty of great music out there to try out in hi-rez.

Anyway, enjoy the new hobby.

Yes, indeed, there is not just classical music on SACD, but it seems that the majority of new SACD releases is classical music. At least if http://sa-cd.net/recent is any indication.

There is also new jazz releases, vocal music like singer/songwriter, blues and so on. I do own SACD of various genres, but since I like classical music I do have a wide collection to choose from.

That said, I would really like to see more new pop/rock released in SACD multi-channel format. Most new SACD releases in pop/rock is remixing/remastering of older performances.

Get Steely Dan's "Two Against Nature" (was album of the year in 2000?) and "Everything Must Go".

And try to get the "Dark Side of the Moon" Parsons' Quad mix DVD-A.

Plan on getting both of those Steely Dan's. And I'm in the process of "acquiring" the DSOTM as I type.

Amazon and Circuit City still have quite a few dvd-a discs for cheap, but get them while you can. I notice a lot of them are going out of circulation and now cost a fortune. Find a good list like this one and buy what you want now before it's too late. http://www.quadraphonicquad.com/QQHiRezPoll2004.htm

you're gonna love dark side of the moon. it's practically a religious experience. and sea change by beck (dvd-audio or sacd) has the best fidelity of any recording i'e ever heard.

Whatever you do, get whatever DVD Audio discs from the major label (non-Silverline) you want ASAP, as they are getting very scarce, and the prices "collectors" are getting for them is approaching staggering levels.
