Title says it all : the Toshiba XE1 (Pal and NTSC for SD), modified for region free playback of SD DVDs, is available at dvdupgrades.ch...

I can vouch for these guys, very serious and perfect mods, as I've used them a few times before, from here in the USA. Only problem is shipping is a bit on the high side, but they do quality work.

i was looking into that too, as some one on UK forum suggested it! May be some one can mode XA2 too?

sounds promising....but here's what they say on their site:

Feature: Player including code free modification (automatic)
Using the code free modification you can play movies from region 1 (USA) and 2 (Europe/Japan). Most likely[u] the modification allows you to play all regions (movies from the whole world).

For the cost of the player and shipping...I would want something more concrete than "most likely"

for cost! you can buy both Denon 2930CI and XA2, I guess!

You are correct. I was looking at the X model, which was $844 vs the reg model which was $420.

Thanks for this info. I'd like to replace my American HD-A1 and British Panasonic DVD-S97 with one unit that handles everything. I'll try calling these guys tomorrow (or whenever they're next open) and ask for more info.

what kind of a mod would this be ? handset hack, special firmware or a hardware modification ?

will we still be able to do software updates and keep it region free for sd dvd ?

i guess not only the xe1 but also the e1 will be modifiable ?

Their mods have always been region foolproof, but they haven't been able to get DVDs from other regions for testing. They're just covering their bases.

They could mod your XA2, however the XA2 is not PAL compatible, so you would be limited to NTSC regions, no european DVDs in that case.

yesterday i tried to play the dts9 demo disc on my xe1. this disc is ntsc and region free... while i think it played in the past it now says... this disc is ntsc, cannot play.
(just upgraded to newest firmware)

so, does that mean the european players dont play ntsc anymore, just like the usa ones dont do pal ? would the region free upgrade also change this ?

Except that it is NOT yet available. I send an email 4 days ago to www.dvdupgrades.ch and got that answer :

sorry, that mod does not exist yet
therefore it is not listed under dvdupgrades

We will have to wait longer...
