Getting 7.1 from 5.1 soundtracks...

What I and many others do now (and would like to KEEP doing with HD-DVD and Blu-ray) is to derive 7.1 sound from a 5.1 source.
We're currently doing this with a regular Dolby Digital bitstream by activating Dolby ProLogic IIx on our receivers or pre/pros. The results are fantastic, for those who haven't heard them.

But what about audio coming in via HDMI as 5.1 uncompressed PCM ? Or 5.1 via the analogue inputs?

(For the record, I'm using the NAD T-163 and will eventually move to the T-175. Surround speakers are the Infinity ES-250 in dual-monopole mode - also fantastic.)

Bass management is another question. For setups like mine, which have a trio of full-range front speakers, 4 smaller surround speakers and no subwoofer (7.0) , what can be done do accomodate this?

Thanks in advance.

Why move onto the T-175 if it can't do what you want? There is equipment that can apply BM and PLIIx to the multi-channel analog in and HDMI.

Check out the "future proof" receiver sticky thread at the top of this forum. There are receivers (and pre/pros) today which will apply full speaker configuration and bass management processing on incoming, high bandwidth, multi-channel PCM (via HDMI V1.1 or higher), as well as processing such as Dolby Pro Logic IIx to raise 5.1 channel PCM to 7.1 channel speaker output.

There are also receivers and pre/pros, which WON'T do that, even though they might have HDMI inputs.

I believe inexpensive HK receivers will do it on the analog ins (don't know about HDMI for HK). Anthem will do it on analog in and I think the HDMI - Bob can verify/correct me. I'm sure that there are others too.
