ps3 as a sacd player??

Thread Starter
I am new and would like to try sacd's. I currently or will soon have the following; Yamaha RX-V2700, Rocket 760's, Bigfoot, RSS-300's, CS-P1000 sub, ps3 and the ONKYO 960HTIB. Oh, and a Sony KDS-60XBR2. I am currently in the planning phase of a 13x18 dedicated A/V room.
How is the ps3 at playing sacd's? If it is not "acceptable, please make reccomendations for a "beer" budget kind of guy.
Thanks.
Ray

P.S. Do you think I would need a seperate 2ch amp/rec for music?

I too would like some receiver recommendations for the PS3 that will pass the multichannel sound over HDMI.

Beer budget? Get the Oppo 970hd. Plays DVD-A too, and much better then average upscaling[1080i] SD DVD player as well, al for $150.

I have found I don't like the sound from my PS3 playing SACD as I do my DVP-S9000ES. In fact, the PS3 is third, even behind my SCD-222ES changer. I will admit it's most likely a cable issue. I don't support HDMI right now, so the PS3 is running audio from the proprietary connector on the back, while the other units have Audioquest patch cables connecting them to the receiver.

The stereo DAC's in the PS3 are crap. You need to use HDMI for the output. Right now it converts DSD to PCM (multi-channel is 24/88.2 and may be upgraded to 176 kHz soon). When they enable HDMI 1.3 features you may be able to pass DSD on to an outboard decoder.

agreed--if not over hdmi (not the best dac's in the ps3) then would go with the oppo 981 or better yet a used denon 2910/3910 (can be had for about 250/500--check audiogon)

I have the PS3 working via HDMI through a Marantz sr7001. I think multichannel SACD audio is quite acceptable with this combination.

how about a PS3 using the optical out?? wouldn't that bypass the PS3's DAC?

What do you guys think the inclusion of SACD functionality in the PS3 says about Sony's plans for the format? If they weren't planning to continue supporting SACD (which seems fairly dead at the moment), why would they include it in a device that already costs so much to manufacture, they lose money on each unit sold? It makes me think (wishfully) that Sony may be planning to revisit SACD as a viable format, now that DVD-A and DualDisc are fairly defunct.

Oh...and full resolution DSD (SACD audio format) cannot be carried over the optical connection. If anything is output, it would be downconverted to a lesser PCM signal.

Yes but the PS3 doesnt support SACD via Optical at all.. (HDMI or Stereo)
I find the PS3 to be an outstanding SACD. Depending on the source of course. Im running my PS3 via HDMI to my Onkyo 804.

Burkerg I think the inclusion of SACD in the PS3 (and the devlopment to get it working so well) Shows that Sony isnt giving up on the format just yet. Wishful thinking.. maybe. But it seems Sony is also pushing SACD in pop, rock, r&B and rap Genre. With Destiny Child, Ludacris. just to name a couple releasing SACD's Not really what I think SACD needs to showcase the technology, but what do I know...LOL

I've got my PS3 playing SACD over HDMI to my Yamaha 1700, and I, personally, think it sounds phenomenal. Then again, I've never really listened to SACD over analog, so I have no basis for comparison. It blows regular CD away, though.

What’s peoples thoughts now with the audio upgrades that came out on the PS3. I run SACD through my PS3 via HDMI to my Onkyo 805 and I think its absolutely fabulous. Now that more people have a proper config for their PS3's (with more hdmi 1.3 receivers out there), what’s the thought?
