I actually don't show a ship date on the 705 yet. If May 10th is correct that would be awesome. The only two receivers in my system are the 605 and 805 both in black and silver.

Thanks, I was mainly concered with the component switching and the higher quality DACs so good deal.

I completely understand, the Burr Brown dacs is also what made me decide on the 805 over the 705. Even if it is THX select2, it's still one impressive spec sheet. My only hope is that it uses a GUI similar to the 5200ES Sony or the new Denons. But at $1000.00 I wouldn't hold my breath. I'm sure the 875 and 905 will have this feature.
I'm pretty sure that only the TX-SR905 and the top-of-the-line 1000 are THX Ultra2 certified. The others are THX Select2 (705, 805 & 875). Onkyo has not yet stated a ship date for the 705.

Eric

I must be honest I have to question Amazon's May 10th ship date for the 705. I'm a sales manager at J&R and I don't have any shipping info on the 705 yet.

OK, maybe this is the place to post this. I'm wondering what the difference is/will be between the 604 and the 605. I literally just received my 604 from J&R this past week and don't even have it out of the box yet. Does it make sense for me to try to return it (is there a way to return to J&R without having to pay the shipping and handling) and try to get the 605? What are the chances that I'll get in on the pre-orders (price and timing) at this point? I don't even see it on the J&R site Is it going to be that much different that I am likely to be annoyed that I didn't wait a couple weeks (or a month) for it?

Thanks.

The 605 will be out next month. The real advantage to getting the 605 are the built-in DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD codecs. The 604 is a great receiver (I'm not just saying that because I want you to keep it). The truth is, it's too early to tell if the 605 is a vast improvement over the 604. We've sold tons of the 604's and continue to do so. There's always a risk when owning a first gen product and there's still looks to be some debate whether certain movie titles will allow you to send these new codecs via bitstream for decoding in the receiver rather than the player. My expectation is that there will soon be players out that have DTS Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD (which the Toshiba's already have) codecs built into them so you can enjoy these formats with your current 604.

I agree with you, the AVR-2307 is a GREAT receiver and because it accepts 7.1 LPCM it's nearly future-proof. I own a 2807 personally, and I love it. I'm only considering buying an Onkyo 805 for a second system but my Denon is a keeper.

And you're right about not losing. Besides you can never really tell what manufacturers are going to do? Just be sure to share your first impressions with us. We're anxious to hear how that bad boy sounds.

can lrstevens or anyone else offer a comparison of say the Denon line vs the Onkyo line? More specifically say the AVR-2807 or AVR-3806, in comparison to the Onkyo TX-SR805 and TX-SR875 (from the specs so far seen)?

Some of this information is new to me, its hard to know whats really useful or needed. I was planning on getting the Toshiba HD-XA2 HD DVD player to go along with.

Audio quality(formats/codecs supported), where the audio is decoded, SD video upconversion are some points of interest to me. If I get the XA2 which has the audio pre-outs for all the channels, does that mean all I really need in the receiver is the pre-inputs? Would all the possible audio streams on HD DVD be processable? Since I'm getting ready to do a HT upgrade I want to do it right and get something that will last another 10 years like my current setup has.

Reason i ask all this is someone said earlier that both the HD player and receiver both have to support hdmi 1.3a and I;m confused as to whether this will impact the audio if I use the pre-outs, or if it only affects the video.

This is getting confusing. If there's a FAQ anyplace please point me as my eye's are glazing over.

Thanks,
Theron

Hmm....I also bought recently SR-604.

If i buy a Toshiba(with DTS Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD) player as you said,
Will the SR-604 able to recieve the new codecs from Toshiba player and output the DTS Master Audio or Dolby TrueHD to the speakers?

My Home theatre setup has Sharp 1080p HDTV,SR-604,DVD player,POLK speakers and PS3 .
Please suggest me........
Any help is greatly appreciated.

First off, great setup

I'm not sure if the Toshiba does 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, I'm pretty sure it doesn't. It however certainly does 5.1 TrueHD. If you set your Toshiba to output in "PCM" or "Auto" the Toshiba will decode the signal internally and send it as uncompressed PCM to your 604, which the Onkyo handles flawlessy. As a matter of fact I would bet that the SHARC dacs in the Toshiba may perform better than what may receivers offer. If you have already own a 604 and a HD-DVD player that does TrueHD the only real advantage you will get is the DTS Master Audio which is still "iffY" going bitstream.

Hi Theron, it's really difficult to compare the new Onkyo's to the already very well established Denon's. Although the Onkyo's offer HDMI 1.3, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby TrueHD, and what appears to me more watts per channel. How well they are implemented may be another story. Denon makes GREAT sounding receivers. Both of the Denon's in question accept 7.1 LPCM so they will mate perfectly with the Toshiba HD-XA2 and are relatively future-proof. In fact the internal decoding in the Toshiba is top-notch so one might question getting a receiver that does the decoding. It can send uncompressed PCM, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD to the Denon's via HDMI and 7.1 analong-ins without a hitch. Furthermore Denon's are a tweakers dream as they are loaded with ton's of options. Onkyo's menus are known for being a little bare bones, at the same time making them easier to use. What's similar about all of these receivers is that they all have the same great EQ system. But Again, it's way too early to tell how they will sound vs. the Denon's. Onkyo however does make great sounding receiver historically speaking.

I forgot to mention, the Onkyo's has better video processing than the Denon's (on paper), especially the Onkyo 875.

What does the "paper" say about the video processing of the soon to be released Denon 3808? I've had my eye on that one for a while now and it's supposed to be out in July. Haven't seen the video processing specs yet though.

I'll certainly!! I personaly do not believe in UPSCALING in reciever or TV, if I have XA2, or REON containing source, thats where it should happen. Transcoding analogue to digital, long with upscaling, possibly? e.g S video, component to HDMI is understandable!

So, bottom line is for much purpose DCDI upscaling is MUTE for me, more so DCDI is notorious for MACRO BLOCKING/CUE on certain displays

It's been speculation that the 3808 and up will use the upconversion chipset from Silicon. I sure hope this becomes a reality for Denons sake

They've had good results with Silicon implemented in their latest high-end DVD players.

I too have had bad luck with DCDI products. The offerings from Silicon work much better, IMO. I don't use my receiver for video processing so this doesn't concern me much.

I see where Circuit City has all of their Onkyo receivers on sale. Could this be an indication they are clearing out their stock in preparation for the new models coming in shortly? Here's hoping.

Does anyone know why Amazon and other on-line sellers stopped listing the Onkyo receivers? While they may have pre-sold all of their first incoming shipments of these new items, it would seem like they would want to keep the orders coming in for future sales? Just curious.

Crutchfield has their entire line on sale as well. So, I would say this is a clear indication that they are clearing out inventory.

Irstevens,
First off, thanks for the info you've been providing.

Secondly, I'm new to the forum, but I don't think we're supposed to talk about exact pricing for stuff on the forums. I'm not trying to get around this rule with word play, but I was hoping you might be able to answer some questions I have about J&R's Onkyo pricing.

First off, are the currently shown prices for the Onkyo receivers on the J&R site discounted or is this their normal pricing? And if this is their normal pricing, can we expect similar pricing on the new line? If they are currently showing a discounted price, would it be possible for you to tell me how much J&R sold the sr804b receivers for before being discounted?

Let me know if you feel this is better discussed in email, or if I should just call J&R.

Thank you for your time.

The 604's handling of the .1/LFE channel via LPCM has been the topic of quite a bit of discussion. I 've seen comments that it has "great bass", but haven't seen confirmation that it adds the appropriate 10dB boost using an actual discrete LFE channel, only that it's not adjustable. Have you gotten any feedback on this?

I wonder what the likelyhood is of such support showing up in an A2 via firmware...

Great posts, btw.

Hello MIAaron, you're right about discussing prices on the forum, it's pretty much frowned upon. I am on the this thread for informational purposes only, so I will try to be as helpful as I can. We are authorized dealers for Onkyo and many other brands, and we are known for our fantastic prices. I encourage you to call our Sales dept. with any questions you may have. My guys are courteous and knowledgeable. I apologize for the politically correct response, from one Avs'r to another

A few receivers give you the option of adding the bass boost, while other just seem to get it right. The digital receivers from Panasonic are another example of this. They can sense the LFE signal and automically apply the bass boost when necessary. I concur with others regarding the excellent bass that the 604 dishes out. I hope this helps

I appreciate your info. There have been conflicting reports of when J&R will be shipping the 605. I have one on preorder so I am quite vested in this According to this thread somebody was told that J&R was shipping them essentially now. I've also heard "a couple of weeks" and "May". Do you have any clarification on all this?

I can't remember the last time I was so excited about a new receiver line-up. Onkyo covers all the bases with this new series. I love a manufacturer who thinks about the little guy as well. If nothing else, I respect Onkyo for this much.

I can tell you that we are pretty much in the same boat as eveyone else. Onkyo tells us mid-May so that's what we are waiting and hoping for. We are expecting to receive both the black and the silver models sometime next month. I apologize, but this is all of the information that I have right now. I too am hoping to purchase the 805, so I understand the excitment
