Some people prefer to let their speakers roll off naturally rather than apply a filter that will cut off the bass at a specific frequency. In order to do that, you need to send a full range signal to your speakers. Then, to play back the lowest frequencies, you carefully dial in the crossover knob on the back of your subwoofer juuuuust till it takes over where your speakers are rolling off.
Personal preference. The idea being to make maximum use of your speakers and use the sub only
for what your speakers cannot reproduce (and nothing more). It's also a nice bass management alternative for people who typically find themselves turning off their subs when listening to music.
I guess some people also use the double bass feature to overlap the low frequencies between speakers and subwoofer, for exaggerated bass. Like any feature, it can be used or abused.
