Called a dealer from the forum today just to see if he would put me on his 905 list and he got twelve in today with two not spoken for. I grabbed one and should have it early next week! While I was on the phone someone called and bought the other one. Just dumb luck to get one I guess.

Hi. I'm new here. I am currently using the TX-DS 989 Ver2, which was quite a pricey machine in it's day. I'm looking for the upconversion and hdmi capabilities of the new 875 and 905 but are disappointed in the lack of certain important features. Only 2 optical ins? No rec out function and only one recordable video source? This just seems donwright skimpy in light of all of the possible video options out there from DVR's to Hard Disk Recorders etc...This leads me to believe that Onkyo must be planning a flagship recever in the $3500-$4000 range as they have always had, but I have no proof of that. Does anybody know of their future plans? Because if this is it, then I may have to start looking in Denon's direction and I have always been a big fan of the warm Onkyo sound.

Brian-Mac;

with regard to digital inputs...I think the theory is that the hdmi replaces these over time.

For example; my dvd player does not need any digital inputs anymore given the hdmi. Same with the cable box.

Yes, most people think there will be a new flagship. There is also the separates option.

By the way, there is a third optical input...it is in the front and is linked only to aux 2. My guess it is for hooking up game consoles, which in my family seem to get unplugged and taken upstairs or to other locations all the time. So a front panel input makes sense.

I am sure you know about the three coax spdif inputs. Many devices have both optical and coax--like the cable box and the dvd player...which as mentioned also have the hdmi.

Interesting comment about the sound. I always like my Integra and like my 905...but most people here seemed to agonize over Onkyo vs. Denon on the sound issue. Of course personally I think the 905 sounds every bit as good as my upstairs Denon 3806. Both are quite wonderful, by the way.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. It's just that my current Onkyo is 4 years old and has more of everything except upconversion and hdmi which I am getting around with a couple of Zectors. But it sure would be sweet to have everything running through the Receiver and just one output to the TV. It's like the impossible dream but I keep hoping...

I'll keep checking back here for any news of the SR-1000???

When the Cable box (Motorola) is routed through the HDMI on the Onyko 705, the Sharp 52 LCD ..Model U92 I only get the high channels and maybe only the HD.

If I run the HDMI cable from the Cable Box to the TV I get all channels.

When I run the Phillips DVD which up converts to 1080p I get a the movie, etc.

Is it me or the equipment?

I recently used the Audessey setup to tweak my speaker settings on my 605 for 5.1. I've noticed that since I ran that setup I no longer get any bass from my DefTech Sub800 when I use one of the stereo listening modes specifically for listening to music. When I pop an HD-DVD in my XBOX 360 the sub comes alive as I on Dolby Digital Ex setting. When I first had the receiver hooked up to only 2 fronts a center and the subs the sub would always fire for all listening modes. What gives?

Has anyone else run into the following issue:

I have my Verison FIOS box connected to my 605 via HDMI then out to my TV via HDMI. sometimes when I change the channel from an HD channel to a non HD channel the the pictures begins to skip and goes to a white out grainy screen and back to the skipping screen.

I though it might have been the FIOS HD receiver but not the case as I turned the FOIS receiver off switched the 605 to DVD mode and turned on my XBox 360 and the problem continued.

The only way to fix the problem is to turn the 605 off wait a min or two and then turn it back on.

Seems as if the reciever needs to reset itself

Any idea on why this would be happening?
passthrough function is imperfect, while the source device and the monitor do not change, the data signal from the source does, and it seems the passthrough software isn't ready for that quite yet. when it bugs out it appears to be unable to clear itself. a reset of it is neccessary.
Is this only an issue with the 605 or will all the Onkyos? Would it make sense to contact Onkyo to see if the have a fix to the Firmware?
I don't believe this is an epidemic problem. I don't recall any issues with HDMI -> HDMI passthrough from other posters that comes close to your issue. I've never had anything close to what you describe w' 2 605s and a 705. Video passthrough works fine for me.

Try posting this issue in the "New Onkyo 605....." thread.

Spoke with Onkyo, they stated to do a system reset, will do so when i get home tonight, if that does not work I will have to send to in to be looked at.

Hi Peoples.

I would like to know the difference between the 875 and 3808 in terms of 1080p24/50/60. I know the Denon lists these features but does the Onkyo? I ask this because I cant find the answer anywhere and because I just purchased 2 875's 1 for my lounge room and 1 for my theatre room using it as a processor only in the theatre room as i have 2 Rotel power amps

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My brand new 605 smells like a burned out electrical component. It works fines as far as I can tell. Is this normal? I have read here that it runs hot, so maybe the smell is somewhat normal for a new system.

Anyone have the same smell coming from their 605?

does anyone know if the PS3 is capable of sending out Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD etc in lossless bitstream so these onkyo recievers can decode them?

The new Onkyo 705 gives you 3 hdmi (1.3a) inputs, 100 watts per channel (7.1) + 2 more in zone 2 and Thx Select 2 certification. It just like all the newest Onkyos also does the external decoding of True HD and DTS HD MA....For 550-600 bucks (on normal sale prices).

805 vs 705
The main draw of the 805 over the 705 is gives ultra THX cert while 705 gives you select 2 THX and 605 gives you no THX. Ultra THX cert is for big rooms, select 2 is for mid/small rooms. (I find myself using Pro Logic IIx most the time anyway) Also each receiver gives you 30 more watts per channel of power. (70,100,130). (for the units 605, 705, 805 respectively)

705 vs 605
The reason to get 705 over the 605 is again of course, watt increase, THX cert, extra hdmi input.. lol.. and of course the glowing blue volume ring!

905 vs (605, 705, 805)
The reason to get the 905 over all the other models is the HDMI upconvertion to 1080p ... analog and digital sources at a lower resolution can be outputted via hdmi at 1080p. The 605, 705, 805 all cannot do this.. and they actually downconvert higher resolution analog sources being pushed through HDMI. However all these units can do pure HDMI pass through without changing the resolution.

Reason I like 705 out of this lineup:
Biggest reason is great price for high quality:
The 705 doesn't overheat like the 805 and 905 does (no reported overheats in out 705 circle yet). (These 805/905 units tend to get way more heated up and users report automatic system shut downs, or increased popping) however, because the 705 was built after the 805 and after the 605 and has a more efficient power supply then both of them. It consumes as much power as the 605 even though its pushing 30 watts per channel more. (Tests done with KILL A WATT meters on all 3 units at same volume load) The best part is, people (including myself) have bought it for 550 bucks.. usually around 600ish. The 905 costs quite a bit more in the lineup and the 1080p upconvert is nice.. in my mind its a better reasons to spend more money from the 705 then the 805 is. The 605 and lower without THX certification is just low on my list because of that reason.

Also if you have hearing problems this 705 will get PLENTY loud at 100 watts per channel... it also sounds very clear... these new receivers from Onkyo are sweet over last generation of receivers.

Does the 875 have HDMI upconversion to 1080p ??

I don't think it can, but you should go to the PS3 threads on the Blu-ray forum to check...
I read somewhere that Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD is only available if I use HDMI 1.3. Is that true? Can I use an optical cable between my HTPC and the 605; and have the receiver decode the Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD?
JojoToto--well...you could of course have the signal decoded to PCM and sent over HDMI. I presume you mean sending the bitstream over HDMI to be decoded in the receiver. Remember, you need a player with the right capabilities both in terms of hardware and firmware (some recent Samsung units can do this, but need the latest firmware).

I'm so glad I asked you guys first.
I was planning to buy the 605 because of its capability for decoding TrueHD and DTS-HD. However if I plan to only use it with an HTPC (not planning to get a standanlone player soon), the receiver decoding and HDMI 1.3 compability seem useless.
I may go with the 505 for a cheaper price.

Thank you for your help.

Hey I've been an audiophile forever but I'm new to this forum. I hope someone can help me. This is my setup: Samsung HLT-5689S DLP, Toshiba HD-A35 dvd player, and brand new onkyo 605. I am running an hdmi cable from my A35 into my receiver and then another hdmi out from my receiver to the my tv. I set the audio outs to bitstream and put on Batman Begins and changed the audio settings in the dvd menu to dolby true hd. All it seemed to do was decrease the volume and I cannot for the life of me get it to play a movie in Dolby True HD! When I hit the display button on my dvd it says that it is decoding in true hd but the receiver still says PCM and will not give me the listening mode option to put on dolby true hd. Can anyone help me??

You can't get TrueHD or DD+ via bitstream...it has to be decoded in the player and then output as PCM to your receiver. That's as TrueHD as TrueHD can ever be...you're not missing a thing besides that little lite on the front of the 605. I don't believe any player is outputting bitstream via HDMI for decoding in the player...the reason the player is decoding the signal itself.

A couple of Blu-Ray players do output TrueHD as a bitstream, but most won't. As far as I know, the 605 handles PCM correctly, so you should see no difference between bitstream and PCM (other than the light, as you said).
