Need advice on "HTPC" or HD-DVD player

Right now Ive got Sanyo Z3 720p native projector (less than 300 hours on it) hooked up to my computer using a 6' vga cable, projecting onto just a plain white/off white wall. My "home theatre" room is small, 11 by 9 ,and i sit about 8-9 feet from the "screen", which because of space cannot be any bigger than 70'' diagonal max, usually its at ~60". To my eyes, the image looks pretty good with top of the line sd-dvds like the LOTR series when using plain Power DVD 6 with resolution at 1360-768. However because of space considerations im going to be ceiling mounting the projector now and so i am looking at several options:

1.Get a ~20 foot vga cable and continue connecting my pc to the projector.(hopefully the same sd-dvd picture quality)

2.Get a ~20 foot dvi to hdmi cable to connect my pc to the projector (increase in sd-dvd picture quality?)

3. Buy a solid upconverting sd-dvd player and hdmi cable for the projector (increase in sd-dvd picture quality?)

4. Buy a hd-dvd player and hdmi cable for the projector (increase in sd-dvd picture quality and can play hd-dvds?)

5. Buy that new external toshiba hd-dvd player for my comp (increase in sd-dvd picture quality and can play hddvds?)

6. Buy an xbox add-on for my comp (increase in sd-dvd picture quality and can play hd-dvds?)

In a perfect world id just buy an hd-xa2 and be done with it, but its out of my price range and will stay there for a good while. To be honest, even if i get a hd-dvd player, i wont be able to afford many titles for a good while either, so my main concern is sd-dvd picture quality.

What would you kind folks reccomend? Thanks for the help.

HD-DVD drive for PC or Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive does not improve your SD-DVD playback. It only allows HD-DVD playback on your rig or XBOX 360.

For SD-DVD upconversion your best bet would be Tosh HD-XA2 with Silicon Optics HQV Reon chipset for $570-600 which of course allows you to play back HD-DVDs (cheaper alternative would be Tosh A2 for $300-400 with the free tittles (up to 9 free HD-DVD tittles or the A20 for $$450-500). Second would be HTPC with DVI->HDMI to your PJ (you already own the HTPC). 3rd would be a good SD-DVD upconverter STB DVD player like Oppo 981/971/970 (budget would be Sony 75H or pending Phillips 5982).

Since you post it here you will get definitive HTPC pro bias. If you post it in DVD player section then STB DVD players will be pushed. If you post in HD-DVD player section then XA2 will be pushed.

For your particular situation a cheap DVI->HDMI cable to use your existing HTPC may be the most cost-effective solution to your new projector.

AVS Forum members can get the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player for $299 from Value Electronics, plus a free HDMI cable. You also get 5 free HD DVD movies from Toshiba. From what I've read this player is fantastic at upscaling standard DVDs, though the HD-XA2 is even better. I believe that Best Buy has it on sale right now for $399 + 4 free HD DVD movies that you can pick right away, in addition to the 5 free HD DVD movies from Toshiba.
