Check out the lowest price of Toshiba's HD DVD players in Japan

HD-XF2 (HD-A2) ===> $360
HD-XA2 ==> $860
HD-A20 ==> Not yet released
HD-XA1 ===> $390

No news on firmware updates except for HD-XA1

Lowest price of HD DVD title => $26
Lowest price of Blu-ray title => $32

You cannot get below this price in Japan

On purchase of HD DVD player they give just 1 HD DVD free.

the other way to look at this is they are doing well, and do not need to cut prices and offer free dvd's?

What other brands of HD-dvd players are selling?

Not be harsh, but its old news.

HDDVD's worst market has to be Japan.

I am living in Tokyo for quite a long time and as per my analysis HD DVD is almost dead here. This doesn't mean that Blu-ray is winning here coz neither of these formats seem to pick-up in this slow adopting market. Pricing in Japan is atrocious forcing foreigners to buy stuffs from US web-sites or from US friends/relatives who visit Japan. Bcoz of the pricing jumping to the next gen ship is becoming extremely difficult.

Btw it's almost impossible to get other brands of next gen players out here even if they are extremely good coz these people are more compassionate about their products and Japan is traditionally a very closed market.

Japan is more receptive to recordable opticals. Their best selling unit is a panasonic BD recorder unit

At least the fact that neither are really doing good is consistent with the rest of the world... Seems to be in tune with stores like Best Buy reducing their inventory of HD DVD/BR discs lately. It's not looking that great for both formats if retailers are already decreasing inventory...

Blu-ray has 95% of the market in Japan. HD DVD is practically dead over there. This has been discussed ad nauseum in HDTV software forum.

lgans316, a little off topic, im still using the pioneer based audio system in my home theater that i bought in tokyo in 1973.

i used to ski up the road from gotemba and near mt fuji.

also used to hang out in akasaka at club mugen. is it still there? i used to love shopping for electronics in the many stores in tokyo.

IMHO Toshiba have never been taken seriously as a CE company as Sony has. It's one of the contributing reasons why HD-DVD failed.

I'm interested in Blu-Ray player prices. Can you list some here?

That is why I am secretly glad that HD DVD is dying. I would perfer that format, but SD is gonna kill HD until the format issue is a non factor. HD will have a hard enough time as it is overcoming SD.

hd dvd is not doing good in japan because 99% of japanese buy anything sony. toshiba rarely does any business in japan besides cell phones and tvs. which i dont understand because toshiba has been around alot longer than sony and contributed alot more in japanese history is my understanding.
