this is a somewhat confusing issue, but i don't believe that's true. the HD DVD players all can decode Dolby TrueHD (lossless) and send the decoded audio as PCM to any receiver that can accept multi-channel PCM over HDMI (even pre 1.3) or via 5.1 analog outs.
the only reason you would need a HD DVD player with HDMI 1.3 and the Onkyo 605 receiver is if you wanted to send the bitstream (ie., non-decoded) Dolby TrueHD to the Onkyo and let the Onkyo decode it. audio-wise, this should sound exactly the same as the above. for the record, the only HD DVD players that will send bitstream audio over HDMI are the XA2 (with a future firmware update) and the upcoming A35, i believe. the upcoming Samsung dual-format player may as well, i'm not sure.
the only other issue is DTS-MA (the other lossless audio format), which no current HD DVD players decode in the player, although i don't believe there are any HD DVD discs that have a DTS-MA soundtrack yet either. if there are future releases with DTS-MA, you would have to have a not-currently-announced player that can decode DTS-MA, or a player that can send the DTS-MA bitstream to the Onkyo.
pretty simple, eh?
