The Kd-34xbr970 Is Much Better Then The 960

So i have heard all of the cries and there is no doubt that the 970 is much beter then the older 960 model. Its an old outdated model and the super fine tube does not make the older 960 better. the 970 bloes it away!

And you base this conclusion on what?

How does it blow the 960 away? Is it because the 960's SPF tube renders a darker image than the 970? The 960 is widely regarded as having the best image of any tube TV so it's odd that a 970 could blow it away. Did you have both TVs sitting side by side displaying the exact same source at the exact same time? If not, it could be that the 970 was getting a better signal, or was adjusted better. There are a lot of variables that could have come into play . . . . .

A psychological game per-chance? The 970 is the best!!!! It has the best picture ever!!!!!!!!!!!! The 960 is the best!!!!! It has the best picture ever!!!!!!!! HHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHHHAHHAHAHAHAA!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally I dont care which one someone thinks is better. I only know I am happy with my 970 and I hope all who have one or the other are just as happy with what they own.

I think we are being put on.

I have both xbr960 and xbr970. One is in my bedroom, and another is in my living room of my apartment While I am not professional calibrator, I calibrated both of them myself with DVE, so both sets are pretty close. When I bought xbr960 few weeks ago, I was curious how fabled 960's SFP tube compares to 970's, so I put them both on the same channel and did few observations.

From 6 feet the difference is subtle in my opinion. Xbr 960 has slightly sharper image like it has slightly better focus. I didn't noice difference in detail except on text like menus and such. On the 960, text is definitely clearer and more defined.

Once you start getting closer to the sets, like 5 feet and under, the difference becomes more apparent in my opinion. At around 5 feet, I start to notice vertical slits running through the image from left to right on 970. On the other hand, on 960 the slits aren't visible until around 2 feet. Absence of slits in addition to improved clarity make for quite substantional image improvement when I watch 960 at around 4 feet.

That is being said. 970 is a great set and great value for money and anyone who bought it should not feel like they have bad image.

I have not seen them side by side but my hunch is that they could look very similar. It all depends on how far away you are standing / sitting. I'd bet if you were to compare them any distance further than six feet away the differences would be subtle. The 960 can't be beaten when the viewing distance is up close and personal, that's where the 970 will reveal its lower resolution and be grainy.

Yeah, that is what I was trying to get across.

I noted the same differences when comparing my HS510 & XBR960 side by side, the only thing the HS510 beat it in is a slightly brighter / vibrant screen (the xbr960's finer pitch screen doesnt let as much light escape), also a minor but noticeable difference was the subwoofer / bass output from the HS510 is more powerful & deep regardless of settings.

I use the XBR960 for my gaming consoles (360 / PS3 / Wii) & DVD / Bluray movies and have no complaints

I sit almost 10 feet away from my 960. I previously owned the HS420, and I will tell you, IMO, the difference isn't subtle. The 960 has more depth and greater detail and clarity.

It is true that the 960 isn't as bright, but a lot of that has to do with the antiglare coating, which I have removed on mine.
Biggest difference i see is the brightnes of the screen other than that i really don't see hoe the 970 bests the 960.

Even though the 960 has a darker picture it's still the king of CRT PQ, with the 970/HS420 coming a close second.

The OP is correct. Now, if I can just find my clozapine and my copy of Alternate Reality Monthly...

Let's see. On my 960 I use the CableCard so I don't have to use the lousy Comcast STB. I use the firewire connection to record to my Mits DVHS. I use the memory card slot to view my digital camera's pictures.

The 970 might have a nice picture but it doesn't have the feature set I need.

I gotta call Shenanegans on this one. PQ aside (we all know the 960 is the king ) the feature set on the 960 is far superior to that found on the 970. I use the firewire with my camcorder (and one of these days I'll get around to using to record with.) I have a Sony digital camera, and I use that memory stick slot. I have roommates so I watch a lot programming through the TV speaker and that sub, while not really that impressive, makes a big difference. I don't use the cable card only becuase I'm addicted to my DVR. But when I close on my condo and move the DVR to the living room, it'll be nice to still have my digital and premium channels on this set.

I'm not trying to say that the 970 isn't a quality set, because it really is. I don't think it should have been released as an XBR series TV though. And if you will all remember, when the 960 came out the MSRP was $1899 to the 970's $1199 MSRP. I know the majority of us got ours for much less, but when making a comparison, you have to keep the MSRP in mind.

I have the XBR970 and not the XBR960 so I have a reason to want to believe the contents of what was said in this thread to be true but I really, really doubt it. Sure, I've heard the 960 has a darker picture than the 970 but it is hard for me to imagine how 853X1,080 could look better than 1,440X1,080 when both of the sets are manufactured by the same company.

The OP was trying to say that the XBR970 has a much better reliability than the XBR960.

How did you come to this conclusion? "Better" could mean anything

I can agree with that.. theres no denying how many many threads there are of faulty 960's.

all of which were made in mexico.

So by that logic my old 1982 chocolate brown Honda Accord hatchback is better than a Ferrari. I think there are plenty of people out there who would disagree with that
