This combo player will actually have full HD DVD support unlike the half-donkey LG machine.

Here's the link:

LG will have a newer version of their current combo player out later this year that will also have full HD DVD functionality.

I'm up against the wall on this one. I love HD-DVD and I am willing to wait for more titles to come out, but having a combo player is just very tempting. Any thoughts on this? Are any of you getting this player or the one from LG?

I am considering the Sammy if its less than $1000. The LG is off the table until they have 100% HDi and BDJava support.

I might consider the Samsung BD-UP5000 if:
- it has analog audio outputs.
- truely plays back all the features of both formats.
- has ethernet connectivity.
- it does a good job on SD upconversion.
- and if it actually performs as advertised.

Until then, the XA2 stays in my rack.

Concerning the upconversion......Any guesses on what type of chip they are considering?? This would be a make or break decision for me..

It will be required to have ethernet if its to be badged an official HD DVD player, and that certainly looks to be their intent.

A very Important factor for me is DVD playback. Allthough, I wish everything was on HD that is not the case.

I'm with you on this but I will probably wait on the combo player until around the end of 2008 when they are about $200-300.

FINALLY, I've held off buying into this because there are movies on both sides of the fence that I really want to see and just wouldn't buy both formats especially at the cost of the BR machines. And I knew it wouldn't be too long until combo players would become available. Also, the fact that most of the players still don't have full 7.1 Dolby TrueHD or DTS MA decoding ( of course how many movies have either one anyhow?), I knew that as soon those became available I would want to upgrade again and I'd prefer not to be getting into to the upgraditis every 2 years. So yeah, I've missed out watching some hd/br new releases, but I plan on doing a lot of catching up once I get a machine that doesn't limit your movie choices.

Same here. I'm wishfully hoping they're going to use the Reon chip.....
The early reports are that it will NOT use the Reon chip for upconverting (as an economy measure). I suppose one won't really know, though, until Samsung officially announces the specs.

I don't think that's correct either, Panasonic's press release says dts-HD High Resolution Audio - this is not dts-MA.

I'm surprised they can't get it out in time for Xmas 2007. Then again, they couldn't get their last one out for Xmas 2006 either.

Since they're coming out so late with it, the price had better be killer. I'm not optimistic though, given their ludicrous price on their current dual-format player.

Are these LG emails or is it posted someone on their site, because I havent seen anything on there.

If its from their site please give a link. Thanks.

I can't remember exactly but IIRC it's been reported by Engadget and posts by several members here (before the Engadget report).
At least this unit will drive down the cost of the LG model. I may even spring for this one...

The 2nd Gen LG player hasnt been on engadget or engadgetHD...
