It's kind of lame that Hitachi chose not to add a QAM decoder; especially for those that don't want to use a STB.

Does this set have a first surface mirror?

According to this doc (a page from the service manual, compliments of Ballz2The Wallz), the 51F59 has a second surface mirror. The 57F59 has a first surface mirror.

I would need, the deal on these tubes is just to good to pass up, I just
don't have the room for a rack if I buy one. If you can't store anything on
top I'll just go ahead keep up my research on the other TV's.

Thanks.........John

FYI: I have a 12# receiver, 8# center, and around 12# DVD/DTV on top of my 57F59

True, but lack of QAM kept the initial price down.

Actually that and the removal of the "HD tuner" (still does digital OTA, but only displays actual HD via component/HDMI inputs--OTA HD gets dumped to 480i then internally rescaled to 1080i)

Because of that, you could jump on the 51" for around $600 when CC/BB/etc were blowing them out.

For that price, you could easily afford an ext HD tuner or just suck it up and get a cable box (or HD Tivo or whatever with cablecard abilities).

Rather they make the cuts there than in the optics.

Nice lookin' pic, Gordon!

Have you done any of the "tweaks" to your set? Looks too good to be in OOB form.

Can this unit be removed from it's "base"?
HH Gregg has it at a great price. I would be running 3 Xls vertical in my HT system and could have a sturdy enough stand to have my center "under" the unit....
I've got a heavy wood piece I could set it on & "anchor" to the wall....

To replace this:

EDIT: nevermind. From user's manual PDF it looks like some of the boards/connections are part of the base. Bummer....
