Let me dispell any rumours once and for all concerning Beethoven's alleged "connection with God"...Beethoven was not "connected" with God...Beethoven "IS" God....SHOWING OFF!!

I know what you mean. I'm not a religious person, but to me the second movement of Beethoven's 7th symphony comes the closest to being something I would consider describing as the "voice of God".

I hope you've had the opportunity to hear it in SACD. The selections, relatively speaking, are Beethoven heavy. I've got the 3d and the 6th (Eroica and Pastoral), and I know one is by my very own Cleveland Orchestra, and with George Szell conducting.

It's like no other recording, in my book. Just like being there in the symphony hall.

Anyone have suggestions for really nice quality Beethoven recordings presented on regular CD?

Jerry,
The best 5th[IMO] is on CBS masterworks Great Performances sereis[myk36719]and is,with the NY philharmonic with the awesome Leonard Bernstein.
Both the performance and the sound are first rate.It also features Schubert's 8th the "Unfinished" symphony.
Check it out.

Jerry,

I can't believe you didn't ask me first. I'm so hurt.

Anyway, get yourself a copy of Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto. Andre Previn conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra w/ Emmanuel Ax at the piano (BMG/RCA Victor).

Marlene and I listen to this disc all the time. I'd be happy to lend it to you.

Also, a personal favorite of mine is the Berlin Philharmonic bashing away at the 9th Symphony, Herbert von Karajan conducting, on the Deutsche Grammophon label. I've had this recording since 1981. Or buy all 9 Beethoven symphonies recorded by this conducter/orchestra combination in a box set from Deutsche Grammophon.
