Whats Wrong With This Picture

I posted a pic on this thread(second post). I am curious if anyone here knows what would make the vertical bars on the screen--is there some kind of electrical interference that will do that? It's only the HTPC and the TV plugged into a surge protector. Thanks.

Without more information I would guess that could be a scaling artifact. Meaning the output of the PC does not match the native resolution of the panel and the panel is introducing the lines due to poor scaling. Or it could be a signal cable issue. Check your cables if you are using an analog output (VGA, Component, etc...) not much of an issue if you are using digital output (HDMI, DVI-D). Good Luck.

Yeah, I agree that it looks like a scaling issue, especially if it looks okay on other PC applications. If you can try to get 1:1 pixel mapping.

The lines are there no matter what I am doing, not just in Media Center. I have the output set at 1920x1080, which is the native resolution of my panel. I am using a VGA connection--I'll try swapping a DVI cable in there and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks.

Does the TV allow "fine tuning" of the VGA input? It may need the clock or phase adjusted to display the VGA signal correctly. If that's the case DVI will probably work fine.

Right on Chris---a bit of adjusting of the clock and phase and those lines are gone. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

I seen the lines on more then one LCD screen, but always on a non-hd channel.

If you're running the HTPC at the screen's native resolution, you might put a little effort into getting it *exactly* right. Then it will be as sharp as a standard LCD monitor. This can be difficult to do by eye, but there are test patterns that'll help. Let me know if you're interested.

Chris:

I plan on getting a DVI cable to replace the VGA. I thought I had one here, but it was DVI>HDMI, which won't work(I am using the TV's speakers for sound). So would these test patterns help get DVI-delivered video "just right" or is that only for VGA?

Thanks.

DVI to HDMI isn't going to be any different than DVI to DVI. DVI never carries sound, and the cables that you have at work won't change that. You'll need to run separate cables for the sound.

Anyway, DVI probably won't need fine tuning.

I meant that I am using the TV for sound, and the PC outputs only video over HDMI, and there is no accessory audio input for the HDMI input on the TV. Thus, I have no way of adding audio if I use the HDMI input. The DVI input DOES have a audio input as well.

Oh, okay. Most TVs that I've seen have an audio input for HDMI, in case you are not using transmitting the sound over HDMI.
