Radio Station WZLX On The Air With Surround - Provided by Fraunhofer IIS and Telos Systems

ERLANGEN, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--CBS radio station WZLX in Boston launched its new 5.1 Surround service this week on the station's main HD channel, based on MPEG Surround technology provided by Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS and Telos Systems. WZLX is the first commercial radio station to broadcast fulltime in 5.1 MPEG Surround.

Denny Sanders, Managing Director of Telos Systems explains: J.D. Power and Associates' research has confirmed that surround sound is at the top of the list of the entertainment features that new car buyers want in their next vehicle. Many cars already have surround disc players available, surround sound is an integral part of many HDTV receivers, Radio audio should not take a back seat to TV audio, should it?

To broadcast multi-channel sound on its HD radio signal, WZLX uses the new MPEG Surround technology provided by Fraunhofer IIS. This new MPEG standard allows broadcasters to switch from stereo to surround in a smooth and cost efficient way. It can be used in any digital broadcasting system. Due to its backward compatibility, existing stereo HD radio receivers will be supported without any loss in quality.

Harald Popp, head of the Multimedia-Realtime Systems department of Fraunhofer IIS says: We are happy to see world's first commercial radio station using our MPEG Surround implementation to broadcast an impressive 5.1 surround sound service.

Telos' Axia division provided the integrated digital multi-channel studio infrastructure. According to Sanders, manufacturers Bose, Boston Acoustics and Tivoli - all based in the Boston area - are monitoring and evaluating the WZLX broadcasts on prototype receivers provided by Fraunhofer IIS. The first major, commercial radio station actually broadcasting in authentic surround represents an important step in the eventual marketing of a genuine surround receiver

Telos CEO Steve Church joins CBS's Paul Donovan in a discussion about the joint Telos-WZLX-Surround broadcasts at 1PM on Wednesday, April 18 at The Telos Booth (# N7726) at the Las Vegas NAB.

Founded in 1985 the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen, today with 480 staff members, ranks first among the Fraunhofer Institutes concerning headcount and revenues. With the development of the audio coding method MP3, Fraunhofer IIS has reached worldwide recognition.

It provides research services on contract basis and technology licensing.

The research topics are: Audio and video source coding, multimedia realtime systems, digital radio broadcasting and digital cinema systems, integrated circuits and sensor systems, design automation, wireless, wired and optical networks, localization and navigation, imaging systems and nanofocus X-ray technology, high-speed cameras, medical sensor solutions and communications technology in transport and logistics.

The budget of 58 million Euro is mainly financed by projects from industry, the service sector and public authorities. Less than 20 percent of the budget is subsidized by federal and state funds.

Telos Systems, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio with offices in Europe and Canada, is a leading manufacturer of ISDN, coded audio and telephone interface products for talk-shows, teleconferencing, audio production, remote broadcasts, and intercom applications.

Are there any tuners out there to decode this??

I know some may be excited by this. To me, it's a big yawn. All the music I want to listen to is in stereo or mono. Most surround mixes are just plain gimmicky. I personally wouldn't pay a nickel for this "feature", and I'm a longtime radio nerd and studio owner. If someone as into technology as me wouldn't pay, and doesn't care, well...

I know of like two albums that I would actually want to listen to that are mixed in 5.1 (Weird AL's Straight Outta Lynwood [which I own] and Switchfoot's Nothing Is Sound, both on DualDisc.) Surround Sound music recordings consist of a little bit of classical music, a handful of jazz and rock (and some old Quad stuff from the 70's).

BTW, that'd be great if there was a station that played "Quadraphonic Oldies" 24/7.

The one surround sound CD I have is great because it's a live recording where you really would be surrounded by the sound of the audience and the acoustics of the venue. A lot of live DVDs have excellent 5.1 sound.

It's nice to have a center speaker because you don't have to rigidly sit in the "sweet spot" to hear a decent stereo image.
