Mythtv issue - Please Help

Thread Starter
Hi I have installed Mythdora 3.2 frontend and backend installed on 1 computer - I have setup my mysql databases and zap2it listings all working etc - I can see program schedules etc etc.

All of this is with a computer no tv hooked up.

I have 2 issues right now.

1. I cannot view live tv - The screen goes black for a second then goes back to the menu.

2. I cannot schedule or record anything - I can set it to record but it just keeps saying NOT RECORDING.

what am i missing here - I know my setup is right for databases - tuners etc - inputs, shouldn't i be able to watch live tv i can see the program guide just fine.

Or do i need to do all of this from another Mythdora frontend computer only?

It would help to have some more information. Are you able to watch live TV from any frontends at all (or do you only have this one?). what type of tuner card do you have? Did it scan channels okay? Do you get any error messages? Run mythfrontend from a terminal and see what it outputs when you try to watch live TV.

To answer your questions

1. Are you able to watch live TV from any frontends at all (or do you only have this one?) NO live tv, Yes this is my only one.
2. I have a Happauge wintv pvr 150 with the gray - black remote.
3. yes it did scan channels correctly
4. No error messages.

When you say run:Run mythfrontend from a terminal and see what it outputs when you try to watch live TV - do you mean install a Myth frontend on another computer?

Thanks but i am new / Noob lol

You would close the mythfrontend you are currently running on the same machine and then open up a terminal and type:

mythfrontend

I'm not sure how much of fedora is installed with a mythdora installation, but there should at least be the ability to open up a terminal (such as xterm) from somewhere. (is there a run command option or something? if so you would just type xterm there and then run mythfrontend from there. You can also look at your backend logs, but we need you get to an open terminal first...

mythfrontend outputs information about what it is doing to the terminal when it is run from a terminal.

Ok so if i got this - if i boot up Mythdora it goes right into Mythtv- I should then close mythtv and then i will be back in Fedora, open a terminal and type Mythfrontend and then it should emulate Mythtv and i should be able to watch tv and schedule etc etc?

Pretty much yes, that is what should happened.

type

mythfrontend

(all lower caps). It isn't actually emulating mythtv. It is exactly the same program that is run automatically. Running it from a terminal should allow you to see what messages it spits out when it having problems. Those messages will be in the terminal window, which will probably be behind mythtv. You should be able to press ALT-TAB to switch between the two.

You know, mythdora may output mythfrontend logs somewhere else so running it from terminal to see output may be unecessary. unfortunately, I am not familiar with mythdora so I don't know where it would log frontend output. I use ubuntu, and always run mythfrontend from terminal. When I first installed I had problems here and there, and looking at the output helped. That and the mythbackend logs, which if you get a terminal we'll look at next...

Well i ditched Mythdora and now I am running Ubuntu 7.04 latest - I installed Mythtv front and backend - I am typing this on that computer.

I have setup Mythtv etc - it's found the guides and and and my card etc - and MYSQL.

But when i run mythfrontend from the terminal i get the following messages - it looks like my username or password are not configured to the - MYQSLSERVER

See the Log from the terminal

Which guide did you use? Also, although I'm happy to help, there are a lot of helpful people over on the ubuntu forums who can help as well. The problem you had with the database I've seen answered over there a couple of times. The answer escapes me now...

When you reinstall, I strongly recommend you use:

I just used the synaptic package manager to install Myth, I am going to read that Webpage tonight - I am so close!

Thanks for your help so far - Ubuntu is pretty cool and it runs good on this computer.

Sorry for the long wait in between posts was on vacation - I have installed 7.04 Feisty and I have Myth working good now a few issues exsist with Myth but i can work them out later. I do have a couple of issues with Feisty - Keep in mind this was a fresh install - Please let me know if you can help!

Newlinux you have been helping alot and i really appreciate it. I really don't want to start over but if i have to it will not be the end of the world.

1st issue - I installed Feisty and the install seemed to go fine till the very end, if I remember it right the cdrw/dvd drive icon popped up on the desktop and it's been there ever since. I cannot acess the drive it will open etc - But if i put in any type of cd or dvd it will not mount / read data - The drive was working fine till i installed Feisty, If I restart the computer and have the Feisty or any other boot cd in it will read it. I have scoured the forums and ther is mention of this problem but No solution that i have seen yet.

2nd - I noticed that i have no admin access - if i go to users and groups under system/ admin and click on the users and groups it wants my Main password i type that in then it stalls for just a second and comes and says the following - (The configuration could not be loaded - you are not allowed to access the system configuration)
Ok if i am not the Admin how come it accepts my password - but i can also perform other admin functions like use Synaptic etc.

Thanks Aj

If I may step in here.

The first issue sounds like it could be a permissions issue. This is odd because Ubuntu usually gets this right. I would check the ubuntu forums about that one.

The second issue...be sure you are typing YOUR password. Root (the real administrator) doesn't have a password set in Ubuntu by default and can only be accessed via sudo (or similar frontend apps)

Sorry, I've got no ideas on the first one.. Try right clicking on the icon and unmounting/ejecting?

As for the second issue, who are you logging in as?

what does:

Code:
cat /etc/group | grep admin
return? the usernames after the line that start with admin are administrators. If you are in that list (and if you can use synaptic you probably are) then something is going wrong with your group admin tool. Can you manipulate groups via the commandline? That could be a work around for now.

BTW, I remember what I think would have fixed your database problem, but I guess you don't need that now...

For your first problem, is this thread similar to what's happening? Seems to be common in Feisty:

Thanks for replying.... Ok here goes .....
1. Just playing around I tried to eject etc but it didn't work , after a reboot the icon is now off the desktop but - I still cannot read any cd's or DVD'S with the drive if i put a disc in no auto start- if i right click to mount from places computer - it says unable to mount there is probably no media in the drive, I took your advice and went to that thread in the Ubuntu forums which linked to another thread.... Here is what another person got working.
[b]: Error after 7.04 install: ata2.00 : failed to set xfermode(err:mask=0x4)
Well I found a post on the launchpad that said can't boot properly without adding irqpoll to the boot options, tried that and it fixed my issue right away

so in /boot/grub/menu.lst I added irqpoll to the kernel line

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-15-generic root=UUID=48c5a348-eb39-4171-8531-671a49fdb75b ro quiet splash irqpoll

So I tried following his recommendation but it says i cannot edit menu.lst because of permissions - Damm - Probably because i am not Admin..... But i know i am. I did what you said cat /etc/group | grep admin[/code] and i am listed in there twice. but i am there. hmmmmm weird huh

In the terminal type "sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst"
This will open up a basic text editor in the terminal with root (admin) privledges, and then you can change what you like. Then you should be able to save the changes you make (ctrl-x to save and exit).

I don't play ubuntu so I can't help you there.. your original issue with the black live tv was most likely a video driver issue as I ran into that myself a few times in the past.

you should be able to ssh into your ubuntu computer using a putty client from a windows box and then login as root and edit the permissions that way if you have to.

did you say you scanned for channels??? if so you need to not do that you need to pull the channels from the guide data.....
