DefTech disappointing - need help with plan B

I was really looking forward to listening (and buying) the DefTech Mythos package to mount along side my plasma. However, after listening to a pair of Threes with a Seven CC, I was extremely disappointed. They sounded ok when combined with a pair of Gems for the back and an 8" sub while listening to movies, but the Threes alone we very tinny and shallow in music (e.g., Alicia Keys).

So, back to the drawing board... in search of small profile speakers that sound and look good, while coming in at < $1500 for the whole package (I'd forgo the rears and go with a 3.1 for now if thats what it takes to get a good set, and add on later).

I was very surprised by the sound of Mirage Nanosats, but have my doubts that they can be good all-around speakers for HT and music. The Omnisats are quite a bit more expensive, but I wonder if they're a good buy when paired with the Mirage CC.
Can anyone recommend where to go next? Should I also look at Energy, HSU, PSB, KEF? Is it unreasonable to expect great sound from a speaker thats less than 6" deep?

Thanks!

NHT L5s have serious mid/upper bass capability and sound anything but thin. They have dual 5.25" midbass and a single 3" so they're far more capable than the typical 2-way. They're 6" deep exactly including bracket, so they're bigger than most but they're also clearly better than most because they're not nearly as compromised. However, they're pushing your price quite a bit. On the other hand, if you listen to them without a sub, you'll be wondering if you need a sub. The Verve system is very, very nice. It is probably an upgrade and easily in your price range. That's a 3-way system as well and the matching sub is very nice sounding and integrates beautifully. Sounds bigger than it is.

Your other ideas make sense to audition too.

Check out the monitor audio radius series also for a good on wall option that sounds great. You still need a sub though as I think all on-wall options that i've heard need.
I think the radius225s or radius250s are nice at 350ea and 399ea retail pricing. Don't buy a monitor sub, get a sub from someone else though.

Then the dealer must have set them up wrong. I have Mythos speakers and they are awesome. Did you try the Mythos 4's or ones? I can't imagine them disapointing someone.

+1 I found them overpriced and underwhelming.

coming from klipsch i had to understand that brightness is not awesomeness.

i listened to mythos speakers about 6 months ago and found them tinny. i went to another dealer a week ago and found them beautiful. it was funny because i went into a mag

listend to the mirage...said, "hey pretty good for so small" then listented to mythos, def tech pro monitor and others. def techs were all much better to me at least.

Now I have no idea here, but has anyone liked the Paradigm Cinema Series....
http://www.paradigm.com/Website/Site...ma_Series.html

I haven't heard them, but they are just as pretty...

But Im sure that with any speaker that doesn't really have a cabinet that they will be pretty disapointing... maybe not... Anyone can chime in here..?

also, as a mythos dealer, they don't sound good without a sub. They are designed 100% with a subwoofer in mind as part of the system IMO. Either way, i've found they are a love it or hate it type of sound to them for many customers.

They sound as lackluster as the Mythos, but for less money, though still overpriced for what you get. I compared the Mythos and Cinema series last month and neither won.

Aviman, what are your speakers of choice?

I have not found any "on wall" speakers that could perform as well as a modestly priced pair of bookshelf speakers. Th whole "on wall" speaker thing has great WAF, but low returns on investment with respect to sound.

Amen. Sunfire CRM (or CRS if you can get 'em) may change your mind however but basically I agree with you.

Too true. There are a few good ones, but the imaging and overall quality won't be the same.
