NBC Upfront:
The Official Announcement
(NBCU News Release) Published: May 19, 2009

NBC ANNOUNCES 2009-2010 PRIMETIME SCHEDULE BOLSTERED BY MORE ORIGINAL PROGRAMMING THAN EVER BEFORE

Shared Time Period Strategy Around NBC’s Broadcast of 2010 Winter Olympics Along with Jay Leno at 10 p.m. Enables Network to Broadcast Original Programming Year-Round

Network Renews Returning Series "Law & Order" and "Chuck”

NEW YORK -- May 19, 2009 – NBC announced today its 2009-2010 schedule featuring more original programming than ever before and a shared time-period strategy around NBC’s Olympics platform that, along with “The Jay Leno Show” (Mondays-Fridays 10-11 p.m. ET), allows the network to broadcast all-new content year-round.

In addition, NBC issued renewals to "Law & Order" and "Chuck” (see accompanying release) as part of its strong slate of new and returning shows announced recently at the network’s highly successful Infront.

“NBC has picked up more scripted shows than last season even with “The Jay Leno Show” at 10 p.m.,” said Ben Silverman, Co-Chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios. “We’re incredibly excited about our new and returning series and have more comedy programming than anyone else, as well as two of the most buzzed about new shows, 'Community’ and ‘Parenthood.’ We can’t wait for the fall.”

"We are extremely proud to introduce these strong new series to NBC's schedule next season in strategic timeslots that position them for success," said Angela Bromstad, President, Primetime Entertainment, NBC and Universal Media Studios. "They join some of the highest quality returning shows on television, which will serve as a strong foundation to the new schedule. I think viewers are going to be happy to see this lineup of great new shows that will truly fit the NBC legacy of quality, culturally defining shows."

NBC’s shared time period strategy will kick off this fall on Mondays with the premiere of “Heroes” (8-9 p.m. ET) continuing with all originals before "Chuck” assumes the time period after the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, which will be a powerful launching platform with its broad, female appeal and strong ratings as the most-watched event of the year. Using "NBC Sunday Night Football's" potent promotional platform, the new high-octane drama "Trauma” will debut Mondays (9-10 p.m. ET) with the epic event series "Day One” taking over the time period following the Olympics.

NBC’s successful "The Biggest Loser” series continues Tuesdays (8-10 p.m.) and will help launch the new Wednesday lineup this fall, with the new family drama “Parenthood” debuting (8-9 p.m. ET) and the new hospital drama "Mercy" assuming the time period post-Olympics. “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” will air 9-10 p.m. ET following “Parenthood.”

NBC’s Thursday marquee comedy night will begin with the only live comedy between 8-10 p.m. on any network, “Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday” (8-8:30 p.m. ET), followed by “Parks and Recreation” (8:30-9 p.m. ET), “The Office” (9-9:30 p.m. ET) and the new comedy “Community” (9:30-10 p.m. ET). After “Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday” completes its multi-week run, “Community” will move to 8 p.m. and “30 Rock” will debut at 9:30 p.m., enabling NBC to feature more original comedy than ever before.

On Fridays in the fall, the enduring drama "Law & Order" will return for its record 20th season (tying “Gunsmoke” as the longest running drama series in primetime) and will lead off at 8-9 p.m. (ET) while "Southland” follows at 9-10 p.m. (ET), building a great crime block.

Saturdays will be a showcase for "Dateline NBC” (8-9 p.m. ET) and encore episodes of "Trauma” (9-10 p.m. ET) and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (10-11 p.m. ET).

"Football Night in America" (7-8:20 p.m. ET) and "NBC Sunday Night Football" (8:20-11 p.m. ET) – the number one show of the fall -- will return on Sundays in the fall with a fan-pleasing schedule of games to round out the fall season.

Utilizing the compatible demographics provided by the Olympics, NBC will launch the premieres of "The Marriage Ref" from executive producers Jerry Seinfeld and Ellen Rakieten (“Oprah”) on Sundays (8-9 p.m. ET) and the third season premiere of "The Celebrity Apprentice” on Sundays with two-hour editions (9-11 p.m. ET). In addition, the new comedy “100 Questions” will debut on Tuesdays (9:30-10 p.m. ET) following a 90-minute edition of "The Biggest Loser” (8-9:30 p.m. ET).

And coming in the summer, NBC will telecast all original episodes of “The Jay Leno Show,” "Friday Night Lights,” "America's Got Talent,” “Breakthrough with Tony Robbins,” "Dateline NBC,” with additional programs to be announced later.

Or in the Spring to pluck a ratings hole somewhere.

Is "Deal Or No Deal" canceled? It's not on NBC's Fall or midseason schedule. Will NBC keep it in its back pocket when/if something dies in the ratings? Also, seeing the final schedule (until NBC re-shuffles it again when all the networks show theirs ) it has dawned on me more clearly than ever that this is it for Zucker, Silverman and Immelt as far as NBC is concerned. They've gambled big by putting Leno at 10 and he's expected to deliver well-enough to at least be able to trumpet profitability in the absence of high ratings. If Leno tanks (i.e. he doesn't consistently beat even lowered expectations) and drags the NBC local news across the country into a ratings funk I can't see how these three cannot either be canned, replaced or severely downgraded from their power positions after what they have turned NBC into in the past six years (when Zucker started messing with the schedule around the time "Friends" ended). This has got to be it as far as excuses and lifelines these guys can come up with as to why the network they run is in the toilet, right? RIGHT??!!

So Friday Night Lights will have a fall Direct TV Debut followed by a network broadcast the following summer? Quite the delay compared to the Fall/Winter run they did last year. Though i have no idea where you would put it in this more compact schedule. It still amazes me they gave them a 2 season go ahead. But im thrilled.

I'd have to disagree. He didn't get kicked off the Tonight Show. NBC made a deal five years ago to give O'Brien the show.

It felt then that Leno would be fading.

But far from it, he has continued to increase his lead, in total viewers and the 18-49 demo, especially in the last two years.

And considering that NBC's prime time schedule has been tanking, and the CBS schedule has been the only major network to show growth, that is remarkable.

As to Leno failing, it may well happen. But what seems clear from the current Zucker-Silverman regime is that should Leno fail, he will be replaced by shows you likely will enjoy even less.

Whatever, he's just going to tarnish he legacy and get canceled after 6 months. I really hope so at least.

The 2009-2010 Season
NBC Upfront:
A Schedule Built With Jay in Mind
By Bill Carter, The New York Times, in the “TV Decoder” blog, May 19, 2009

Looking for a prime-time comeback, NBC announced a schedule Tuesday that builds nights around the regular presence of Jay Leno at 10 p.m. each weeknight.

NBC will add shows in two separate periods of the season, in the fall and then in the winter following its coverage of the Winter Olympics from Vancouver. In a small surprise, NBC will bring back its longest-running drama “Law & Order,” for a 20th season, placing it on the fall schedule on Friday nights at 8.

The strategy, said Ben Silverman, the co-chairman of NBC Entertainment, is to use NBC’s highly viewed package of NFL games on Sunday nights to promote more male-oriented shows in the fall, and the Olympics in February to promote the introduction of more female oriented new shows in the winter.

No show will be more important than “The Jay Leno Show.” NBC, which still has not announced a start date for Mr. Leno, will move several 10 p.m. shows up to 9 p.m. to make room for the show. Mr. Silverman said the network has also tried to give Mr. Leno the best lead-in audiences it can.

So NBC’s strongest holdover drama, “Law & Order: SVU,” will move to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays. The network will add a new family drama with a big name cast, “Parenthood,” at 8.

And NBC will try to make a go on Fridays at 9 by slotting its new critically praised police drama “Southland” there. “Fridays are a tough night but we hope we can be more patient with it there,” Mr. Silverman said.

NBC is also keeping intact its two-hour version of its reality hit, “The Biggest Loser” on Tuesday; the network had considered dividing it into two one-hour editions at 8 on Tuesday and Wednesday. But NBC hopes to keep up the show’s momentum on Tuesday, and bring more viewers to Mr. Leno at 10.

A new medical drama, “Trauma,” will be the 9 p.m. show Mondays; NBC will try to build interest in its action elements with promotion in football the night before. “Heroes” moves to 8 where it will run without repeats until the Olympics. After that, the comedy-drama “Chuck” will return to the 8 p.m. spot.

NBC’s best new hope for comedy, “Community,” will get the network’s best location on Thursdays at 9:30, behind the comedy hit “The Office,” at the start of the season. Mr. Silverman said because of movie commitments for its stars Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin, NBC needs to delay the start of a new season of “30 Rock” for about a month. “Community” will get that position. Special live editions of “Weekend Update” from “Saturday Night Live” will run at 8 for those weeks before “Community” is moved to that slot.

Mr. Silverman said “Update” will return for 3-4 week runs at several times during the season.

Other new NBC series like the comedy “100 Questions,” the reality show “The Marriage Ref,” and the medical drama “Mercy” will be introduced after the Olympics.

Bubble shows learn their fate
'My Name is Earl,' 'Medium' canceled
By Michael Schneider, Variety, May 19, 2009

Most of TV’s remaining bubble shows finally learned their fate on Tuesday - and the news was mostly brutal.

Shows handed pink slips included NBC’s “My Name Is Earl” and CBS’ “The Unit.”

Both come from 20th Century Fox TV. Peacock also cut “Medium,” which hails from CBS TV Studios.

“The Unit” is believed to be officially over, but there may still be some life in both “Earl” and “Medium.”

20th Century Fox TV is set to talk post-upfronts to both sister Fox and also ABC about potentially taking over “Earl.” Their interest in the show is unclear at the moment.

As for “Medium,” show could very well wind up at CBS, given that its sister studio produces it. Some believe that “Medium” could make a good fit with “Ghost Whisperer” on Friday nights.

Has history not taught you anything? If NBC goes even further down the toilet, Zucker at least will turn it into a promotion. I have never seen a better example of falling up.

Overnight Nielsen Notes in the 18-49 Demo
CBS captures final Monday of sweeps
Averages a 3.9 in 18-49s, 0.5 ahead of ABC
By Toni Fitzgerald, MediaLifeMagazine.com staff writer, May 19, 2009

CBS made it two weeks in a row, winning Monday night for the second consecutive week on the final Monday of May sweeps.

CBS averaged a 3.9 adults 18-49 rating for the night, according to Nielsen overnights, bettering No. 2 ABC at 3.4/9 by half a point.

ABC and Fox had traded the Monday light lead with CBS since January. But with “House” airing its season finale last week, Fox fell back to third place at 3.0/8.

CBS got a lift from “Two and a Half Men,” the night’s top-rated show with a 5.2 rating. It also had the No. 2 show, “Rules of Engagement,” which averaged a 4.4 behind “Men” at 9:30, a good showing for a program still looking for a fourth-season renewal.

The premiere of ABC’s “The Bachelorette” performed decently, though losing more than a third of its “Dancing with the Stars” lead-in. The two-hour “Bachelorette” averaged a 3.0 at 9 p.m., second in the timeslot.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Thirty-one percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

For the night, Univision placed fourth at 1.6/4, NBC fifth at 1.5/4 and CW sixth at 1.2/3.

ABC began the night in the lead with a 4.2 at 8 p.m. for “Dancing with the Stars,” with CBS second with a 3.1 for “Rules” (2.6) and “How I Met Your Mother” (3.7). Fox was third with a 2.9 for the first half of “24,” Univision fourth with a 1.4 for “Cuidado con el Angel,” NBC fifth with a 1.2 for “Deal or No Deal” and CW sixth with a 1.1 for “Gossip Girl.”

At 9 p.m. CBS took the lead with a 4.8 average for “Two and a Half Men” (5.2) and another episode of “Rules” (4.4), while Fox moved to second with a 3.2 for more “24.” ABC was third with a 3.1 for the first hour of “Bachelorette,” Univision fourth with a 1.8 for “Mañana Es para Siempre,” NBC fifth with a 1.5 for more “Deal” and CW sixth with a 1.3 for “One Tree Hill.”

CBS was first again at 10 p.m. with a 3.8 for “CSI: Miami,” followed by ABC with a 2.9 for another hour of “Bachelorette.” NBC was third with a 1.9 for “Medium” and Univision fourth with a 1.6 for “Cristina.”

ABC was first for the night among households with an 8.0 average overnight rating and a 13 share. CBS was second at 7.6/12, Fox third at 5.6/9, NBC fourth at 3.5/6, Univision fifth at 2.3/4 and CW sixth at 1.7/3.

I couldn't agree more.

When Zucker took over, NBC was firmly #1.

And now....

Just Chucky being Chucky

Gruden Reneged On NFL Network Deal
by ProFootballTalk.com

Well, ESPN has now hired two new broadcasters who reneged on verbal deals with other networks.

Last month, we reported that Matt Millen had a verbal deal with NBC before jumping to ESPN. (ESPN spokesman Bill Hofheimer later denied that ESPN had knowledge of any deal between Millen and NBC, and we didn’t get around to posting on that before the shelf life on the story had expired.)

Now, Peter King of SI.com reports that Jon "Chucky" Gruden had verbally agreed to work for NFLN, as the color commentator for the league-owned network’s in-house slate of games.

Per King, the two sides had finalized “everything but the signature on the paper.”

Then Gruden took a job with ESPN.

And so NFLN chief Steve Bornstein reportedly is furious with Gruden, and presumably with ESPN, which stealthily swooped in to nab Gruden once ESPN realized that the guy who looked like Beavis with the “bighead” camera feature could be swapped for Beavis’ alter ego, Kornholio.

Our guess? Agent Bob LaMonte intentionally and deliberately (and discreetly) shopped the NFLN offer to ESPN, which knew that everything needed to be kept on the down low. As the saying goes, it’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission, and ESPN likely now has some work to do to repair its relationship with the league.

Meanwhile, our old friend Steve Duemig of WDAE in Tampa, a well-known Gruden critic, has unloaded on the former Bucs coach via Twitter:
“Now people should believe what I’ve been saying about that a-hole all along,” Duemig says.

The 2009-2010 Season
NBC's fall schedule
By James Hibberd, The Hollywood Reporter senior reporter, in his LiveFeed blog, May 19, 2009

NBC presented its 2009-10 schedule Tuesday that includes a shared time-period strategy and "Southland" moved to Fridays.

With "The Jay Leno Show" occupying the 10 p.m. hour, all eyes were on how NBC would manage to reconfigure the rest of its lineup and new shows into a tighter schedule. The answer is having series share time periods through the course of the season, broken up with coverage of the Winter Olympics. The strategy will presumably allow for fewer repeats, though could cause ratings erosion if serialized shows get cut short or have a longer hiatus to make way for new content.

Mondays held the most dramatic change, with "Heroes" shifted from its longtime 9 p.m. spot, moved back to 8 p.m. to help support medical action-drama "Trauma." "Heroes" is also operating with a shortened order next season and doesn't have a spot on the midseason schedule. "Chuck" will replace "Heroes." in season and apocalyptic thriller "Day One" will take over for "Trauma."

On Tuesdays, NBC decided to keep "Biggest Loser" at two hours, which is the wise play.

Wednesdays, where the network has really struggled this season, NBC plans new dramedy "Parenthood" ("Mercy" in midseason) leading into "Law & Order: SVU."

Thursdays keeps "Parks & Recreation" at 8:30 and "The Office" at nine, but other two comedy block slots will see some shifting. The network will start the fall leading off with "Saturday Night Live" specials at 8 p.m. and new comedy "Community" at 9:30 p.m., then shift "30 Rock" into its usual 9:30 slot and "Community" to 8 p.m.

Fridays will see the 20th season of "Law & Order" followed by the return of "Southland," whose ratings started solid and have since declined on Thursday nights.

“NBC has picked up more scripted shows than last season even with “The Jay Leno Show” at 10 p.m.,” said Ben Silverman, Co-Chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios. “We’re incredibly excited about our new and returning series and have more comedy programming than anyone else, as well as two of the most buzzed about new shows, 'Community' and 'Parenthood.' We can’t wait for the fall.”

Sorry, I was exaggerating. But whether or not people watch him, Leno is just the same old schtick all the time. Way too soft. He'll have to be even softer at 9PM. I was glad when the end date was in sight, so I wouldn't have to watch him in order to watch stars I wanted to see interviewed. And now this - what is it even going to be anyway? Just a rebranded Tonight Show?

Ausiello's twitter account is reporting that CBS has picked-up "Medium." Guess we'll find out soon enough, but wouldn't it be a riot if CBS puts "Medium" on Fridays after "Ghost Whisperer" and it takes off beating NBC's "Southland" soundly in the ratings? It would prove once and for all that it's NBC's inability to promote its own schedule that has hurt the network more than anything, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Can't wait for tomorrow's CBS schedule announcement!

“ESPNU is committed to college sports programming 365 days a year, and this move to DIRECTV’s CHOICE package allows better access for college sports fans -- nationwide -- to all of the quality content provided on the network," said David C. Preschlack, executive vice president, Disney and ESPN Media Networks.

“DIRECTV continues to offer the best sports programming to its customers,” said Derek Chang, executive vice president, Content Strategy and Development, DIRECTV, Inc. “By expanding the distribution of ESPNU, we take that commitment to another level for all college sports fans across the country.”

It would prove once and for all that it's NBC's inability to promote its own schedule that has hurt the network more than anything, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Can't wait for tomorrow's CBS schedule announcement!

"Medium" was really the one big shocker for me looking at the NBC schedule, I really expected them to give the show a last minute renewal. Others have been throwing out this Friday slot after GW as a good place for it, the only problem with that would be that it would prove how superior it is to GW.

I do hope CBS gives it a pass though, it's one show I'd hate to see go. I have some friends though that are already up in arms about CBS canceling "The Unit" so they'd probably blame "Medium" for that cancelation.

Doesn't matter since I have 4 tuners to record with, but still.

I'd think that Eastwick would pair better with Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice. Flash Forward could be either at 9 or 10 PM Wednesday nights and then be paired with Lost when that returns.

Still, there probably will be several changes to all of the networks' time slots as they react to other announcements.

The 2009-2010 Season
Upfronts: ESPN Brings the Kitchen Sink
By Stuart Elliott, The New York Times' 'TV Decoder' Blog - May 19th, 2009

ESPN, the first cable channel to crash the broadcast upfront week, came loaded for bear. Heck, ESPN came with a bear, along with a husky, cheerleaders, baseball and football players, video clips, confetti and shtick galore.

The ESPN upfront presentation, on Tuesday morning at the Nokia Theater in Times Square, ran an eventful 90 minutes. The jam-packed, kitchen-sink line-up of news, sales spiels, gags and jock talk seemed to be programmed like ESPN itself: In other words, something different happened every few minutes as if all the agency folks in the audience were young, hyperactive ESPN viewers with short attention spans.

(As, come to think of it, many of them probably were.)

“In these times, we’re realistic, yet optimistic of what lies ahead,” George Bodenheimer, president for ESPN and ABC Sports, units of the Walt Disney Company, said as he opened the presentation.

The format echoed the format of the signature ESPN show, “SportsCenter,” just like the presentation the channel made last May. That was the first time ESPN decided to horn in on the week typically devoted to the new-season schedules of the broadcasters.

ESPN anchors — Steve Levy, Hannah Storm and Scott Van Pelt — hosted segments of the presentation, interviewing ESPN executives as if they were athletes. Then, to keep the anchors in fighting shape, a couple of athletes were added to the mix: Kurt Warner, quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, and Joba Chamberlain, pitcher for the New York Yankees.

These were among the many, many announcements made during the ESPN presentation:

* The channel’s coverage of the World Cup, from June 11 to July 11, 2010 in South Africa, will get the biggest marketing build-up in ESPN history. Coverage will include live “SportsCenter” shows and programming online and on mobile devices. All 64 matches will be shown in high definition, said John Skipper, executive vice president for content.

* For ESPN’s coverage of the United States Open tennis tournament in August and September from Queens, the channel will introduce “Love30,” which will enable fans to catch up with the last 30 minutes of action through highlights on espn.com or the ESPN mobile Web site.

* ESPNU, the channel devoted to college and university sports, will be added to cable systems owned by Comcast as well as by DirecTV.

* “SportsNation,” a live hour-long studio show with viewer contributions, inspired by content on espn.com, will begin on the ESPN2 channel at 4 p.m. on July 6. There will be a sponsorship by Toyota Motor. There will also be redesigned companion content on espn.com. The show will accept telephone calls, e-mail messages, text messages and Twitter tweets from viewers.

* There will be new applications for the iPhone from ESPN the Magazine, ESPN Fantasy Football, ESPN Alerts and ESPN ScoreCenter.

As for the bear, it was a Bruin, as in the mascot of U.C.L.A. The husky, also in mascot form, came from the University of Connecticut. The cheerleaders belonged to the Dallas Cowboys, as did presumably the confetti.

CBS has canceled long-running Sunday night action-drama "The Unit" while NBC is putting an end to Thursday night comedy mainstay "My Name Is Earl."

The studio for both shows is 20th TV, which is talking to Fox and ABC about possibly picking up "Earl" to continue the show's run.

"Earl" averaged 4.5 million viewers and a 1.7 adult demo rating for its most recent run. "The Unit" pulled 9.6 million viewers and a 2.4 rating.

It's funny, I know no one will believe me. But I watch a LOT of TV and if I stop watching a show 95% of the time it gets canceled. Not to say shows I do watch don't get canceled. But boy, if I stop watching one look out. LOL

The only exception to the rule lately is Fringe.

Ben Silverman named Newark Star-Ledger TV critic Alan Sepinwall by name at the NBC upfront press conference among the reasons why the network renewed "Chuck." From the L.A. Times story covering the upfronts: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/show...n-lineups.html.

"My Name Is Earl" and "Medium" were not so lucky. They've been canceled.

"We had an abundance of extraordinary development this year and are obviously looking for shows without a ceiling that have unlimited growth," Silverman said. "We had a good run with those shows, but they have been on an aggressive downward trend, and it was time for us to commit to new fresh blood. Our core audience, and the online community, that is, Alan Sepinwall of the New Jersey Star-Ledger, drove people to demand that 'Chuck' be picked up. Unlike everybody else, we listen to both our audience and our advertiser and are able to make decisions collectively. And on the other side [we] didn’t get lobbying or requests of our audience or advertisers for the other shows."

Watch now as Alan develops a huge ego and thinks Silverman will take his calls or put him on speed dial.

Don't worry about Sepinwall, dad, he is a big boy.

Ausiello he is not.

The musical dramedy 'Glee' has the tryout of its life
By Maureen Ryan, Chicago Tribune - May 19th, 2009

"Glee" (8 p.m. Central, Fox; THREE STARS out of four), a show about a high school singing club, is having the audition of its life on Tuesday.

There's no bigger launching pad in television than the post-"American Idol" slot, so the pressure is on "Glee" to perform well. But even if the show clicks with the public, you'll have to wait months to see more; "Glee" won't return until fall.

Let's hope that by then this intriguing and so far sprightly update of the old "Hey kids, let's put on a show!" chestnut fixes its problems.

Not among the problems: the talent level of the performers. Much of the lead cast has to sing in the "Glee" pilot, and the two biggest musical numbers are tremendously entertaining. They're shot and performed with verve, and they put to shame those hokey medleys contestants often perform (or lip-sync) on the Wednesday edition of "American Idol."

So "Glee" works as a musical. Whether it will work as a satirical dramedy about the cutthroat social environment of high school is another matter. If, like me, you're a former fan of FX's "Nip/Tuck," you may end up wondering which Ryan Murphy will take the upper hand when "Glee" returns.

Murphy created both "Glee" and "Nip/Tuck," and the latter show, in its first couple of seasons, was a deliciously edgy yet contemplative exploration of the varying demands of inner and outer beauty. Then Murphy apparently got bored and kept piling on "shocking" scenarios and doing his best to undercut, if not decimate, the show's appeal as a character drama.

There are signs that Murphy is willing to depict his "Glee" characters with some compassion, at least for now. Casting Matthew Morrison as Will Schuester, the teacher trying to resurrect McKinley High School's glee club, was a wise move; the actor not only has a sweet voice but a hangdog hopefulness that gives a needed anchor to the show's more satirical elements. Cory Monteith gives quarterback Finn Hudson a jock-ish authority mixed with an appealingly square naivete, and Lea Michele not only has an amazing voice but manages to make her character, spoiled diva Rachel Berry, more than a humorless stereotype.

Speaking of humorless, the worst thing about "Glee" is Will's wife, Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig). As written by Murphy and played by Gilsig, the character is screechy, unfunny and deeply unpleasant. It's as if Ryan didn't trust that the audience would get behind Will and the saga of his ragtag glee club, and so he saw fit to give the teacher the shrewish, nagging wife from hell. Sigh.

The rest of the supporting characters are thinly sketched, but that's the case with many TV pilots; there's not a lot of time to establish the show's world and offer complex portrayals of the people in it. In its first hour, "Glee" gets by on attitude -- and stirring music.

But the attitude could get old fast if that's all there is.
