The CW Leads in DVR Playback Percent Growth:

By Marc Berman, MediaWeek, October 27, 2009

It may not be the most-watched network by any means. But based on the week of Oct. 5, The CW continues to lead the broadcast networks in percent gains from all DVR playback in primetime. Take a look at the Live+7 Day results versus Live-Only viewing in total viewers, adults 18-49 and adults 18-34 for the five networks (listed in the order of percent increase):

Total Viewers:
CW - 1.82 to 2.61 million: +43
Fox - 5.96 to 7.94 million: +33
CBS – 10.87 to 13.15 million: +21
ABC – 8.25 to 9.80: +19
NBC – 7.34 to 8.40: +14

Adults 18-49
CW – 850,000 to 1.29 million: +52
Fox – 2.33 to 3.30 million: +42
CBS – 2.63 to 3.53 million: +34
ABC – 2.31 to 3.01: +30

CBS – 1.61 to 2.29 million: +42
ABC – 1.74 to 2.40: +38
NBC – 2.09 to 2.65: +27

Strong Debut for USA’s White Collar:
White Collar, USA Network’s newest scripted series, debuted with a stellar 5.37 million viewers on Oct. 23 -- the best performance in the Friday 10 p.m. ET hour for the cable net since the premiere of Psych on July 7, 2006. Compared to recent series premieres on USA, White Collar in the more competitive month of October outdelivered Burn Notice (3.98 million in June 2007) by 35 percent and In Plain Sight (5.25 million in June 2008) by two percent. Breakout hit Royal Pains opened with a similar 5.57 million viewers this past summer. Results for White Collar among adults 25-54 (2.18 million) and adults 18-49 (1.79 million) were the best in the time period since Feb. 15, 2008.

Record October for Syfy:

Syfy, the growing home of hit scripted dramas, is poised to finish the current month as its most-watched October ever in total viewers (1.45 million), adults 18-49 (744,000), adults 25-54 (787,000), adults 18-34 (317,000), women 18-49 (364,000), women 25-54 (380,000) and women 18-34 (147,000), Full October results will be available early next week.

This way it favors the big market/higher $$ payroll teams who are the tv ratings draws & gives them a better chance at making the playoffs.

Nielsen Overnights (18-49)
With CBS in reruns, ABC rises to No. 1
Averages a 3.4 in 18-49s, 13 percent ahead of CBS
By Toni Fitzgerald, Media Life Magazine - October 27th, 2009

With CBS's powerful lineup in repeats and Fox giving "House" a brief hiatus, ABC climbed to first place on Monday night for the first time this season.

The network averaged a 3.4 adults 18-49 rating and 9 share, according to Nielsen overnights, mostly on the strength of the night's No. 1 show, "Dancing with the Stars." That was 13 percent ahead of second-place CBS's 3.0/8 nightly average.

"Stars" averaged a 3.7 rating from 8 to 10 p.m., just edging a repeat of CBS's "The Big Bang Theory," which averaged a 3.6.

ABC also saw solid numbers for second-year show "Castle" at 10 p.m. The comic procedural, which recently received a full-season order, drew a season-high 2.8 against a rerun of CBS's "CSI: Miami," the usual timeslot winner.

CBS was in repeats in order to save originals for the November sweeps, which start later this week. "House" was off the schedule to make room for "So You Think You Can Dance." That show, which usually airs Tuesdays and Wednesdays, had to move this week's episodes up a day to make way for tomorrow's game one of the World Series.

The CW seemed to benefit from the lesser competition, too. The 8 p.m. show "One Tree Hill" hit season-high ratings among 18-49s (1.3), women 18-34 (2.4) and total viewers (2.69 million).

***

Meanwhile, for the night, Fox placed third at 2.5/6, NBC fourth at 1.9/5, Univision fifth at 1.3/3 and CW sixth at 1.2/3.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Thirty-three percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

At 8 p.m. ABC was first with a 3.4 for “Stars,” followed by Fox with a 2.6 for “Dance.” NBC was third with a 2.5 for “Heroes,” CBS fourth with a 2.3 for repeats of “How I Met Your Mother” and “Accidentally on Purpose,” Univision fifth with a 1.4 for “El Nombre del Amor” and CW sixth with a 1.3 for “One Tree Hill.”

ABC was first again at 9 p.m. with a 4.0 for more “Stars,” while CBS moved to second with a 3.5 for repeats of “Two and a Half Men” and “The Big Bang Theory.” Fox was third with a 2.4 for “Lie to Me,” NBC fourth with a 1.9 for “Trauma,” Univision fifth with a 1.7 for “Sortilegio” and CW sixth with a 1.2 for “Gossip Girl.”

CBS took the lead at 10 p.m. with a 3.1 for a repeat of “CSI: Miami,” with ABC second with a 2.8 for “Castle.” NBC was third with a 1.3 for “The Jay Leno Show” and Univision fourth with a 0.9 for “Cristina.”

ABC also led the night among households with a 10.2 average overnight rating and a 16 share. CBS was second at 6.1/9, Fox third at 3.7/6, NBC fourth at 3.5/5, Univision fifth at 1.8/3 and CW sixth at 1.6/2.

^^^ So much for "Leno" making a dent in the ratings opposite repeat programming. "CSI: Miami" (rerun) and "Castle" (new episode) still handidly beat Jay to his lowest rating to date in the 18-49 demo (1.3). In the summer I could see a new "Jay Leno" show every night against all-repeat programming standing out and doing well. But in the Fall and Winter opposite partial or mostly new programming on the other channels? Not on your life.

Bob Griese suspended for taco remark

A day after firing Steve Phillips, ESPN has doled out punishment to another one of its analysts.

ESPN college football analyst Bob Griese has been suspended one game for a comment made about NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya.
During Saturday's Ohio State/Minnesota game, Griese joked that Montoya was "out having a taco," after a fellow analyst wondered where the Colombian-born driver was on the Sprint Cup standings.

Griese apologized at the end of the game, and made a second apology later in the day.

Montoya said he did not know who Griese was, and that he "[doesn't] really care to tell you the truth." Montoya: "I could say I spent the last three hours eating tacos, but I was actually driving the car."

To me the shocking part is how do u not know who Bob Griese is ?

What an idiot. And I agree with her that technology will not be denied. Someone will find a way to override that feature if it's implemented by Comcast.

Will they also disable the mute button and the channel changer?

I never watch commercials. There is almost always something else to flip to during the break. If not, I turn the sound off and do something else, like post on AVS Forum.

The last time I intentionally rewound to watch a commercial was one with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and I don't even remember what she was selling.

Even though JPM has a home in Miami, I doubt he spent any time thinking about the Dolphins. Hell he wasn't born till the middle of the 70s.

...and really, after Marino has anybody spent much time thinking about the fish?

Why should he? Do you think that, for example, Griese would necessarily be familiar with a number of top F1 drivers or World Cup stars of three decades ago?

And if Griese weren't on ESPN, I'd bet a large number of today's young NFL fans would have little knowledge about him. He retired almost 30 years ago, and wasn't even an immediate Hall of Fame selection.

If you didn't pay attention to the NFL he wasn't a famous person.

And I would guess Juian Pablo Montoya wasn't a big NFL fan growing up in Colombia.

But even if he was, Griese retired when Montoya was five.

The NFL is a certainly a colossus in the United States. But overseas it is pretty much irrelevant in a world dominated by World Cup and F1 stars.

He's not that famous, the world does not revolve around the NFL. In fact, I'll wager that more people around the world know who Montoya is than Griese.

Ah, but that was back in the golden days when the NFL was populated by colorful characters who tried to figure out how to win, not how to keep from losing..

Peter Berg and Kyle Chandler on the restructuring of 'Friday Night Lights'
By Todd Martens, Los Angeles Times staff writer, in the “Show Tracker” blog, October 27, 2009

When the third season of “Friday Night Lights” wrapped in late 2008, star Kyle Chandler was under the belief that he’d be hanging up his coaching cleats for good.

The series, which touches on the political, social and familial impacts of a football-obsessed but beleaguered town, carries with it a small but dedicated audience. Last year, it also became somewhat of a network experiment.

Now a partnership between DirecTV and NBC, “Friday Night Lights” had been trimmed last season from a full 22-episode run to one that capped at 13-episodes. Chandler was convinced that number would soon become zero.

“It was fatigue,” Chandler says, explaining the reason for the negativity. “The first year we were up against ‘American Idol.’ The second year was the writers strike. The third year we get cut down to 13 episodes. I just assumed that while we had a solid base, the numbers wouldn’t go out the roof. … I just didn’t expect that we would overcome a network’s desire for something fresh.”

With “Friday Night Lights” set to begin its fourth season Wednesday night on DirecTV’s 101 Network, Chandler is experiencing something he’s never had on the show before: stability. NBC and DirecTV renewed their partnership for a two-season run of 13-episodes apiece, bringing to an end -- at least for now -- the annual stress over a last-minute renewal.

Yet a sense of uncertainty surrounds practically everything else in the world of “Friday Night Lights.” Set in the fictional Texas town of Dillon, Season 4 serves as a major restructuring of the series.

A plot line involving a town redistricting has provided an opportunity to introduce a host of new characters, as well as disrupt the heart of the show. Chandler’s Eric Taylor, fired as the coach of the Dillon Panthers, is now heading the East Dillon Lions, a team representing a school made up of kids from the wrong (read: poorer, more ethnically diverse) side of town. His wife, Connie Britton’s Tami, remains principal of Dillon High, and its glorious, well-funded football program.

“It’s a little bit of a Horatio Alger story. He’s going from rags to riches, at least he hopefully is,” Chandler says.

Chandler says he called the writers and personally thanked them after reading Season 3’s finale. “If it were to come back, there was a whole new show,” he says. “If the show didn’t come back, they ended it really nicely. I don’t want to say it’s more fun to play, but it’s more fun playing this guy now than still playing the other guy.”

Executive producer Peter Berg, who directed Season 4’s first episode, as well as the 2004 film that was inspired by Buzz Bissinger book, plans to have a bigger input the next two seasons. No longer a "cheerleader" on the sidelines, he says, Berg is eager to see "Friday Night Lights" explore such timely issues as job security.

“On a macro level, what’s great about the new direction of the show is we’ve completely pulled the rug out from underneath this family,” Berg said. “They’re displaced and they’re on entirely unfamiliar turf. They’re going to have to rebuild and reinvent themselves. We’ve sort of destroyed everything that was familiar to this family. That’s very true to the culture. Three or four years is considered a long run as a head coach. It’s not uncommon for these coaches to have to pick up and relocate their families.”

Show-runner Jason Katims, meanwhile, has his hands full developing “Parenthood” for NBC (look for Stephanie Hunt, who plays indie-rock bass player Devin on “Friday Night Lights,” to appear on that series as well). Yet fans may remember that the last time Katims juggled two shows – in 2007 with “Bionic Woman” – “Friday Night Lights” suffered, getting off its realistic course with a murderous subplot.

Berg, however, says he has stepped up his involvement. He speaks of wanting to help define the course of the show over the next two seasons, and had a hand in casting the new characters. Among the newcomers in the first episode are Madison Burge, whose Becky Sproles is said to get close with Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch), and Russell DeGrazier’s assistant coach Stan, who Chandler’s character meets in a dead-end job at Sears. DeGrazier is relegated to little more than comic relief in the first episode, but Berg teases that there’s “a big surprise with Stan later in the season.”

Like last season, some favorites will be leaving.

Chandler spoke to Show Tracker in the midst of filming Season 4’s seventh episode, and relayed that he had just finished shooting his final scene with Zach Gilford’s Matt Saracen. Gilford’s character had turned down enrollment at the Art Institute of Chicago to stay in Dillon and care for his ailing grandmother, as well as continue to date the coach’s daughter, Aimee Teegarden’s Julie.

Fans shouldn’t get too attached to the relationship between Matt and Julie. Says Berg: “Young love doesn’t always last, right? It feels great in the moment, but you have two very young people here. … I always say to all the young actors when they sign up for the show that they should look at this as a temporary gig. You don’t want to be playing a high school football player for 12 years.”

Of course, a decade-plus probably run isn’t in the cards for “Friday Night Lights,” but few expected the series, one that typically averaged somewhere between 4 million and 6 million viewers on NBC, to make it to five seasons.

“The DirecTV deal was a quite success for us,” Berg says. “It speaks to the potential for any show like ‘Friday Night Lights,’ which has a strong fan base but is struggling to put up big numbers. That’s about 99% of the dramas right now.”
