I'll repeat what I have said often, dad. I don't think people really care what I like as long as I provide information about shows they might enjoy. (And the vast majority of shows I post about I would never watch -- although I sample almost all network and major cable programs at least once or twice.)

And I generally work pretty diligently at not injecting my personal negative comments about a show into post here. I have found that people who like a show I might detest take negative comments about their show pretty personally.

So, on this thread at least, it is all about suggesting shows you might not have heard about or some critic thinks you could enjoy. It sure as heck (with the exception of "Friday Night Lights") not about me hitting you over the head to watch , or not watch, any show.

That lengthy disclaimer out of the way, I've watched several summer shows that I enjoy. They just aren't the types of shows most here would agree with me about.

I think "The Closer" keeps getting better; I still harbor hopes for "Saving Grace"; I haven't liked "Damages" at all (except for the chilling performance by Ms. Close); I enjoyed "Army Wives" and "Starter Wife" and don't much care for the other shows I have sampled. I was most surprised that I didn't like "The Company" or "Burn Notice".

I'll give "Mad Men" a try when its run concludes and I can watch the episodes back-to-back.

And there have been a host of great baseball games on TV recently -- last week's 10-9 Phillies Mets game (or was it 28-27?) was as much fun as I can recall having in a while -- and I don't care much about either team.

And then Saturday college football was really fun. Unless, I suppose, you live in Ann Arbor.

I was in East Lansing at Spartan Stadium, that place exploded every time they posted the score from A², simply amazing. To top it off, Michigan dropped completely out of the AP Top 25, coaches poll is not up yet.

I've only seen two episodes of "ER": the live show with the crying/nice baby (two time zone) and the one where George Clooney saves a drowning kid from a river during a heavy rainstorm. That's the great thing about TV-on-DVD: years of shows back-to-back-to-back in mere days/weeks. No messy cliffhangers, no waiting around for stars to be replaced, etc. My co-worker became hooked on the "Stargate SG-1" TV series after he borrowed my DVD copy of the Kurt Russell/James Spader movie and loved it. He watched everything up to season 10 in less than four months and the saw the show's finale in real-time. Now he's moved to "SG: Atlantis" and he isn't liking it one bit.

DVD and DVR alone have changed the viewing habits of so many viewers (particularly in this forum) it's bound to have an effect on network TV's bottom line. Whether its profitable or not its up to each and every network, and so far NBC (with its iTunes pullout) isn't coming up aces.

Most of this weekend was spent watching the FNL dvd set with my wife and I have to say it made me feel really good to have her like it then start bashing the way it was marketed, as in a 'football show'. She is now a FNL devotee and looking forward to the new season. Based on what I read in previous posts about the show not lasting for very much longer, I offer this retort: we've got a bunch of other friends that are new converts, and plan on loaning out the set to entice others. If it doesn't last, I'll just apply the old adage of "enjoy while it lasts". It was good to introduce her to it, and good for me to catch the earlier episodes that original turned me off. I've seen the error of 'their' ways. FNL for life! (or at least another season)

You underestimate your influence and the interest we have in what you watch Fred. As the Grand Poobah of the "HOTP" thread your opinion carries considerable weight and it's ohhhh soooo desirable for us, mere TV sheep, to be enlightened by the aura of your wisdom.

I still enjoy it, but back in the day it was very, very good.

But then most of you knew that.

For whatever reason I never watched a single episode until late May.

I am shocked, that you had never watched an ep of ER, I have watched and not watched for years at a time, I would have never guessed ER in a million years. I thought it was one of those shows you had to have watched an episode of, if nothing else by accident, or it just happened to be on the tube and nothing else was on.

Same here, I thought it was one of those shows that somehow you would just accidentally flip onto at some point.

I loved ER during the golden years of it's first few seasons, but it tested my patience with the Curse of Anthony Edwards and (probably like many others) lost me with the Revenge of the Helicopter.

I am really looking forward to seeing Journeyman, Bionic Woman, and Chuck. While I have no clue as to if they will succeed, I am just excited to give them a chance and look forward to trying them out.

Then top that off with returns of stellar hits like Heroes and the return of Jericho mid season, and I am indeed getting very pumped up by the new season.

Heck, I loved Revenge of the Helicopter. That was one of my favorite eps. But many people think I'm lacking somewhat in the taste department, too.

I think SGA isn't a very consistent show. I've seen episodes I love and others I really hate. To me what made stargate so good for so long was it was half way believable. It was meant to give the illusion that yeah this is far fetched but it's not that out there. Where SGA doesn't even try to do that. Ronins gun makes the cheeses sound effects I've ever heard, and the list goes on and on. I still watch but it could be so much better then it is.

What helped SG1 IMHO is the fact that it almost got cancelled so many times. So the writers would write a story arch over several episodes so they could have a decent ending. Which ironically enough they didn't do this time. I guess we all have to wait for the DVD movies there planing.

BTW Fredfa is my sig cool with you or should I change it???

I've really been enjoying Doctor Who so far. I think it helps immensely knowing that cast changes are built into the entire concept of the show, so when Eccleston left any disappointment I felt was matched by my anticipation of seeing what Tennant would do with the role.

As for Rose... Well, by her final bow I loathed her so much I was practically cheering in the tearful goodbye scene. The whole spoiled, sulky, ultra-possessive attitude she developed grated on my nerves like you wouldn't believe. I was overjoyed to meet Martha and felt she was an immense improvement over Rose. Unfortunately, Martha developed a thing for the Doctor, too, and that took some of the edge off my enjoyment of the character. We'd already gone down that route with Rose and I was less than pleased to see us treading the same stupid path with the new Companion. I am praying to the dark deities of television that there will be no romantic element whatsoever between the Doctor and Donna in the upcoming season. No knowing looks, no moopy eyes, no irritating lamentful sighs; just good storytelling, dammit.

I'm looking forward to Moffat's takeover, too, and I hope he'll steer the show away from "the Companion must be in love with the Doctor" bull we've been subjected to so far.

I'll also be interested to see if Tennant is going to bow out soon, too. He's an amazing performer and I've dearly loved watching him cavort about the screen, but he isn't going to last forever (no matter how many screaming fangirls say he will) and I'm sure that when he goes they'll find someone equally amazing to replace him.

I guess my tastes are somewhat suspect too.

I agree with those who feel DVDs (and DVRs) can change the way many people watch TV.

I recorded many of my favorite series starting last January, and in many cases watched batches of episodes at a time.

No three-week or longer hiatuses (hiati?), etc. And I found that the flow was far easier to sustain -- heck the previous episode just ended 10 seconds ago.

I think the changes in "ER" over the years became more subtle when episodes were viewed en masse -- and to me, at least, far less objectionable.

TBS Renews Comedy Show
‘The Bill Engvall Show’ Gets Second Season
By R. Thomas Umstead Multichannel News 9/4/2007

TBS Tuesday said it renewed its hit original comedy series The Bill Engvall Show for a second season.

The series, which features comedian Engvall as a family counselor whose own family is unpredictable and a little mixed up themselves, has averaged a 1.8 household rating and 2.0 million viewers through seven episodes. The eighth and final episode of the show’s freshman season airs tonight.

In addition, Engvall will host a comedy series special -- Blue Collar Comedy: The Next Generation -- which will debut on TBS Nov. 17.

“Working with Bill and the wonderful and immensely talented people behind his show has been a great experience, and we couldn’t be happier about continuing that relationship on this, TBS’s first in-house production,” said Michael Wright, senior vice president in charge of the Content Creation Group for TBS, TNT and TCM in a prepared statement. “We’re also thrilled to be working with Bill and four fresh comic talents on Blue Collar Comedy: The Next Generation.

Please do. This is one show that took me by surprise. I'm watching the SD AMC marathon episodes and I am surprised by how how good the show is - even in SD. In addition to the cleverness of it, I find myself chuckling at all the portrayals of stuff we now "know" is dangerous (i.e. - the large amount of smoking, kids climbing around inside a moving car, using a dry cleaning bag to play "spaceman", etc.). Even stuff like the "high tech" electric typewriter are fun to experience.

The key is, you can't be overly sensitive to the comments the characters make that today would be considered sexist or bigoted. It's nice to see a somewhat realist environment for the time period, even if some of the comments have a bit of a "squirm factor". Too many shows gloss over that stuff as if it never happened, yet I feel it's important to see just how far we've come - and how far we have to go.

Finally, it's neat to be able to look behind the curtain at how we are "sold to" - even today. I know that having once worked in commercial production, I never looked at advertising the same again. You suddenly become hyper-aware of buzzwords, logos, brand names, graphic layout and usage of color all in an effort to make us not just buy, but buy into something.

Now, I haven't seen all the episodes yet, so my opinion could change later. However, this show is as slick as the ads these guys create and is so far making me a fan.

I'm hoping K-Ville lives up to what I *think* it's going to be. If they keep it gritty enough it'll complement Prison Break well.

So far there's nothing that's moved into the must see category, but I do plan to check out the following:

Reaper, CW
Bionic Woman, NBC
Chuck, NBC
Moonlight, CBS (won't last but what the heck)

I'm also more interested than usual to see where they go with L&O, Mothership.

Planning not to ever watch: Cane, CBS

Other than L&O - which I got bored with and stopped watching several years ago - you and I could be separated at birth when it comes to our tastes in TV...

Peer Review Supports Pro-A La Carte FCC Study
By John Eggerton Broadcasting & Cable 9/4/2007

The FCC Tuesday released the peer reviews of its 10 media-ownership-related studies, plus two others, and the results are a mixed bag, but with at least one big present for FCC Chairman Kevin Martin.

Among the two others was a study commissioned by Martin that generally made a case for an a la carte cable business model. According to the reviews, releaesed Tuesday, it was found to be sound. The Martin-commissioned study had criticized an earlier study conducted under former FCC Chairman Michael Powell that had concluded just the opposite.
Martin is a big backer of a la carte as a way to lower cable prices and raise the level of control parents have over cable programming.

"In sum, I found no mistakes or incorrect economic assertions in the Further Report," said the reviewer of the second a la carte study. "Rather, it appears to present sound economic criticism of the First Report, including pointing out the potential costs of bundling and benefits of a la carte."

On the other side, a study that concluded that franchise build-out requirements would not benefit consumers was found wanting.

A Pew Research Center review of of a Nielsen study on where and how people get their information was labeled a credible effort, but was cited for a low response rate (2.2%) and the citing of online media brands but not others in the questions.

The 10 ownership studies were generally found to be solid, but with suggested improvements and questions about some of the findings.

The FCC commissioned the studies as part of its onoing review of its media ownership rules.

The peer reviews were conducted per Office of Management and Budget rules regarding certain reports from federal agencies.

NBCU to Sell TV Shows Through Amazon
Deal Comes After Programmer Canceled Distribution Deal With Apple iTunes
By Todd Spangler Multichannel News 9/4/2007 2:11:00 PM

Just days after NBC Universal nixed its distribution deal with Apple iTunes, the company announced a new pact with Amazon.com to sell television shows from NBCU broadcast and cable networks.

As part of the deal, Amazon Unbox (http://unbox.amazon.com) and NBCU will offer various content packages, including up to 30% off when customers purchase full seasons of their favorite TV series.

Content to be available on Amazon will include NBC’s The Office, Heroes, and 30 Rock, USA Network’s Monk, Sci-Fi Channel’s Battlestar Galactica, Bravo’s Top Chef and Telemundo’s El Cuerpo De Deseo.

In its failed negotiations with Apple’s iTunes, NBCU had reportedly sought more copy-protection controls as well as more flexibility in pricing. Apple fired back last week with a press release asserting that NBCU had asked for “more than double the wholesale price for each NBC TV episode.”

Amazon Unbox, starting Sept. 10, will allow users to download for free the pilot episodes of NBC’s new shows – prior to their network premieres – including Bionic Woman, Chuck, Journeyman and Life. New episodes will be available on Amazon Unbox the day after they air on TV.

Previously, NBCU had a film distribution deal with Amazon.com -- which has offered movies from Universal Pictures, Rogue Pictures and Focus Features since September 2006 -- but the deal announced Tuesday is the first for the duo covering TV shows.

Overall, Amazon Unbox provides more than 10,000 television shows, movies and other video content for rent or purchase.

“With the addition of NBC Universal TV content to Amazon Unbox, fans now have the ultimate convenience for enjoying their favorite shows whenever or wherever they want,” NBCU president of digital distribution Jean-Briac Perrette said, in a statement. “This further expands our longstanding relationship to bring a robust content offering to the marketplace in a variety of ways that will benefit the consumer and, at the same time, protects our content.”

I was very excited about Bionic Woman... until I saw the pilot. Seriously, don't get your hopes up. If you loved Studio 60 (and you did), you will probably hate Bionic Woman. The writing is abysmal, even by TV action standards. IMO the entire pilot needed to be re-written, and I doubt that's happened, considering that some of the uglier pieces are still appearing as parts of promos on NBC right now. If you didn't think conversations starting with "Who are you?" and "What do you want with me?" were cliched before, you'll have an entirely different outlook after watching.

The premise had loads of promise, and pretty much all of it just gets flushed down the toilet. I really hope the pilot has been overhauled, but I'm not crossing my fingers. I honestly thought the Bionic Woman pilot was worse than the Cavemen pilot. No joke.

I got a chance to watch the three episodes aired over the weekend (still haven't picked up the DVD set) and I was bowled over again by how good FNL really is. There's very little on TV right now that I would rank above it.

I'm not going to be delusional about the situation, though; I expect the show to be canceled by November and replaced by "World's Greatest Illusionist" or some other such tripe. I think the Friday slot is a horrible fit, as IMO this is a Sunday show all the way, especially considering that after football season, NBC will set sail with the demo-splintering lineup of Law & Order, Medium, and Lipstick Jungle. With respect to Law & Order, I hope that lineup gets blown out of the water. What kind of world do we live in where FNL gets pushed into obscurity while Brooke Shields is handed Sunday night? Is America really that dumb?

That turned into a rant pretty quickly.

Like Fred, I have been playing catch up this summer on a few shows that I have missed. I watched season one of The Tudors. My thoughts? Meh. It was just OK, nothing special to write home about and if I never saw another episode, it wouldn't be the end of the world. I much preferred Roma as a period piece. Probably because I cared about the characters Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus. None of the characters in The Tudors did much for me.

I also started watching The Shield. I don't know how I managed to miss it for the last 7 years. But the plus side is I get to blow though all 6 seasons in a few weeks. I have only just started Season 4, but am totally hooked on the show. I think The Shield has taken Rescue Me's place in my book as best show on Fx.

Last show for me was Brothers and Sisters, I managed to catch more than half of the episodes on ABC reruns in HD. The rest were via the ABC web stream, which has a surprisingly good quality. I also thoroughly enjoyed this show, except for the final episode revelation involving Sol. Seemed a little contrived. But I am hooked, and will have to plan my DVR use carefully for one more show on Sunday now.

Altogether a pretty productive TV summer.
