Critic's Notes
Life After Jersey Shore: The Four Inspirations for the New MTV
By Denise Martin, Vulture.com (New York Magazine) - Jul. 9, 2012

With few exceptions, MTV has always been about the shock value. The more they phased out music, the more they replaced it with shows built to attract parental disgust and editorial tut-tutting, from Beavis and Butt-head, Jackass, and The Osbournes to the spoiled kids on My Super Sweet 16 and The Hills. For every inoffensive win like Punk’d and Newlyweds, along comes a monster hit like Jersey Shore to send them right back into trash mode. But now things really seem to be changing. As Jersey Shore starts to slide from its epic heights, the network is pushing into scripted fare with an unexpected sweetness (and decided lack of salaciousness) in shows like Awkward and Teen Wolf. It's reminiscent of the teen-show Golden Age of the WB, which is no surprise, as MTV programming is now headed by former WB entertainment president David Janollari. Oxymoronically, by focusing on teen shows, MTV may finally be growing up.

When Janollari was hired in January 2010, this wasn't his full strategy. He was tasked with figuring out how to diversify MTV’s strict diet of reality shows and produce the kind of high-profile scripted series that have made cable networks like FX and AMC destinations for originals. He bought a couple of risqué shows that seemed to jibe with MTV’s subversive brand: Skins, a controversial adaptation of the gritty British series revolving around a group of drug-using, sexually aggressive urban teens; and I Just Want My Pants Back, a less heavy but equally sex-obsessed dramedy about Brooklyn hipsters. The shows opened to big numbers but flamed out quickly, and the extra-racy content may as well have been kryptonite to advertisers. Janollari says he stands by Skins and Pants as “good shows” that helped establish MTV as place for scripted series, but admits they ultimately didn’t click with viewers. “I think they were just overwhelmed by all the noise and controversy surrounding them.”

Fortunately, he also championed the series reboot of Teen Wolf and purchased Awkward, a hyper, irreverent, modern-day version of My So-Called Life that has charmed the pants off critics. Unlike their outrageous counterparts, these two took off immediately and have seen their ratings grow since. With these shows clicking, Janollari is intent on making more like them. Coming up this fall is Underemployed, a post-grad ensemble drama from Six Feet Under producer Craig Wright about a group of friends working odd jobs just to get by. And on August 20, the network debuts The InBetweeners, a remake of the British comedy following four decidedly uncool suburban boys as they navigate the pains of adolescence. (Even on the reality side, things seem more tame: MTV this year gave the go-ahead to The Heights, which centers on friends in New York City’s Washington Heights as they live and work in the tough neighborhood, and WakeBrothers, a buddy comedy about sibling wakeboarders who happen to be ranked first and fourth in the world.)

Janollari is no longer looking to MTV’s past hits for inspiration — asked about other scripted series that might work for him, he named ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars first — and that’s little wonder, as his network's signature show, Jersey Shore, shows signs of age. Just under 5 million viewers tuned in for March’s season five finale; that’s still a good number for the network, but a far cry from the 8.8 million who saw Snooki get freed from jail in season three. Its spinoffs aren’t showing much life, either. The Pauly D Project barely registered, and Awkward is getting bigger audiences than its lead-in, Snooki & JWOWW. As Janollari maps out MTV’s future, he has four main touchstones in mind, which he recently outlined to Vulture in his Santa Monica office.

Twilight and The Hunger Games. Shippers are running the world, and, as evidenced by the long-lasting devotion to these two franchises alone, they’re way more likely to get sucked into Jenna’s ongoing Matty versus Jake dilemma on Awkward than the big-dick joke of the week on The Hard Times of RJ Berger. Skins might have been applauded by some in theory for its maturity and ambition, but there was no room for the ongoing swoony romances that drive the hits at the box office and on network TV. “Our audience is the audience that built Twilight into a sensation, and Hunger Games, most recently,” Janollari said. “They want to root for the ultimate love affair to blossom.” So in Teen Wolf, the romance between Allison and her werewolf boyfriend Scott is sexy, scary, and constantly thwarted by her werewolf-hunting family, and Janollari says their fans make Teen Wolf MTV’s most-talked-about show when it comes to social media. It also means lots of Scott and Allison GIFs, Tumblrs, and fan-created musical tributes.

Not that MTV is giving up edge and attitude for puppy love. Currently in series contention is a project based on the young-adult novel Cassandra French’s Finishing School for Boys, in which a young paralegal decides to “fix” her latest bad date by locking him up in her basement so she can train him to be the perfect gentleman. It's a twisted idea, and yet Janollari promises that viewers will wind up pulling for the couple.

John Hughes. The preeminent voice of teens in the mid-eighties, Hughes plagued his suburban-Chicago teenagers with universal, coming-of-age problems portrayed without the burden of 21st-century irony or fifties earnestness. Awkward creator Lauren Iungerich calls herself a "huge product" of the late filmmaker's movies, and Janollari says he wants the same kinds of honest, funny stories about those transformative years — “figuring out your first love, your first kiss, your first independence from your parents" — set in less rarefied worlds than those of The Hills and Gossip Girl. “We had a lot of success with The Hills, which was glam and Über-real with pretty people,” Janollari said. “Those were launched in a different time when that seemed embraceable. The world has changed. The audience seems to be relating to characters who have the same issues and problems they do, who also live in the same world. Underemployed, for example, really tackles the current economic situation.”

The parts of Jersey Shore that don't make you cringe. Remember that time when Vinny and Pauly D swapped all the furniture from the outside with the furniture inside? Or when a girl lost her “chicken cutlets” in the jacuzzi? Wasn’t that so much better than watching Ronnie and Sammy’s 53rd breakup or The Situation being hauled away in an ambulance? Janollari suspects that it wasn’t all the squabbling and nightcam smushing that made Jersey Shore a hit. “Our viewers are not looking for the most controversial stuff,” he said. “They’re not looking for the most sexy or raunchy. Teen Wolf and Awkward prove that, to a degree. There’s a loudness to Jersey Shore, but mostly a lot of laughs and an ultimate sweetness.”

Broadcast TV. MTV spent its whole life trying to be the anti-network network; thus the vehicles for fringe comics Pauly Shore and Tom Green, and the precursor to Adult Swim, Liquid Television. Now the channel, which turns 31 in August, is looking toward mass-appeal broadcast shows — “We want good scripted programming with relateable and lovable characters,” Janollari said — if not the most conventional ones. Take the four weirdos rooming together on Fox’s New Girl: They draw an older, broader audience than MTV targets, but “it’s a show we’ve been talking about. How do we do a younger version of it?” And the network is always thinking of ways to keep its music legacy alive, whether in the soundtracks to its shows, or maybe one day with a hit musical series of its own. “I still look at Glee,” Janollari said, “and I don’t even know where its ratings are now, but I watch that and go, ‘That’s a show that would be emblematic for us.’” Somewhere, Spencer Pratt is sadly shaking his head.

Nielsen Overnights (18-49)
Fox cooks up a lead on Monday night
Averages a 2.4 in 18-49s, 20 percent ahead of No. 2 ABC
By Toni Fitzgerald, Media Life Magazine - Jul. 10, 2012

With NBC's "America's Got Talent" not airing on Monday night this week, Fox flexed some muscle.

The network, which has been battling with NBC for the lead on Mondays the past month, earned a solid victory among adults 18-49 yesterday with its two Gordon Ramsay cooking programs.

Fox averaged a 2.4 adults 18-49 rating and 7 share in primetime, according to Nielsen overnights, 20 percent ahead of No. 2 ABC at 2.4/7.

Both "Hell's Kitchen" at 8 p.m. and "MasterChef" at 9 p.m. averaged a 2.4 rating. That marked "MasterChef's" best outing in a month, and its second-highest-rated show of the season.

But ABC had the night's highest-rated show, "The Bachelorette," which averaged a 2.5 from 8 to 10 p.m. as Emily narrowed her suitors to two. That was flat to last week and tied for its best rating since late May.

Elsewhere last night, NBC's "Fear Factor" returned to a 1.3, down from a 1.5 in its most recent episode during the regular season.

With Fox and ABC well ahead of the rest of the broadcast networks, Univision placed third for the night at 1.3/4, CBS fourth at 1.2/4, NBC fifth at 1.1/3, Telemundo sixth at 0.7/2 and CW seventh at 0.2/1.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback, which includes shows replayed before 3 a.m. the night before. Seven-day DVR data won't be available for several weeks. Forty-four percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

At 8 p.m. ABC and Fox tied for the lead with a 2.4 rating apiece, ABC for "Bachelorette" and Fox for "Kitchen." CBS, NBC and Univision all tied for third at 1.3, CBS for repeats of "How I Met Your Mother" and "2 Broke Girls," NBC for "Fear Factor" and Univision for "Un Refugio para el Amor." Telemundo was sixth that hour with a 0.6 for "Una Maid en Manhattan" and CW seventh with a 0.2 for a repeat of "Breaking Pointe."

ABC finished first at 9 p.m. with a 2.6 for more "Bachelorette," followed by Fox with a 2.4 for "MasterChef." NBC was third with a 1.4 for "American Ninja Warrior," Univision fourth with a 1.3 for "Abismo de Pasion," CBS fifth with a 1.2 for reruns of "Two and a Half Men" and "Mike & Molly," Telemundo sixth with a 0.5 for "Corazon Valiente" and CW seventh with a 0.2 for a repeat of "Remodeled."

Univision took the lead at 10 p.m. with a 1.5 for "La Que No Podia Amar," while ABC and CBS tied for second at 1.1, ABC for "The Glass House" and CBS for a repeat of "Hawaii Five-0." Telemundo was fourth with a 0.9 for "Pablo Escobar: El Patron del Mal" and NBC fifth with a 0.7 for a repeat of "Grimm."

Among households, ABC led the night with a 4.3 average overnight rating and a 7 share. Fox was second at 3.4/6, CBS third at 3.3/6, NBC fourth at 2.0/3, Univision fifth at 1.9/3, Telemundo sixth at 1.0/2 and CW seventh at 0.3/1.

DirecTV May Drop Viacom Channels at Midnight - 'No Daily Show, No Colbert, and No Snooki'
By Tim Molloy, TheWrap.com - Jul. 10, 2012

Viacom networks including Nickelodeon, MTV, and Comedy Central could go dark for DirecTV customers at midnight in a dispute over fees.

Viacom says 20 million customers would be affected. DirecTV says Viacom is seeking a 30 percent increase -- more than a billion dollars -- in the fees it receives from DirecTV. Those costs would likely be passed on to customers.

"Unfortunately, Viacom sent a letter to our executives forcing us to take the channels away in order to gain leverage against us in negotiations, but we hope they wouldn’t do that to their DirecTV viewers," DirecTV says on its website.

Appealing to customers to complain to DirecTV, Viacom listed the entertaiment they would lose if no deal is reached: "No 'Dora,' no 'SpongeBob,' no 'Teen Wolf,' no '106 & Park,' no 'Daily Show,' no 'Colbert,' and no Snooki -- a regrettable and avoidable turn of events if there ever was one, and an outcome that our team has worked tirelessly to avoid."

Viacom says it has been "negotiating for months" and offered to extend its 7-year-old contract with DirecTV further past its June 30th expiration date. It also said the two sides had made recent progress in negotiations, but that "DirecTV has rejected all of our proposals to renew our agreement."

Seventeen Viacom networks are affected: Palladia, Centric, Tr3s, CMT, Logo, NickToons, VH1 Classic, TeenNick, Nick Jr., Nick@Nite, Spike, BET, VH1, TV Land, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and MTV.

Hearst Stations Go Dark On Time Warner Cable In Contract Dispute
By David Lieberman, Deadline.com - Jul. 10, 2012

The breakdown over price affects 13 communities including 2M Time Warner Cable customers, as well as Bright House subscribers in Orlando and Tampa. The stations went dark at midnight; Hearst’s contract expired on June 30, but it agreed to let Time Warner Cable continue to carry its stations through the July 4 holiday. It appears to be a garden variety retransmission consent disagreement: Time Warner Cable says on a web site that “Hearst’s demand for a nearly 300% increase is way out of line. That kind of outrageous increase is unfair to our customers and unsustainable for our business.” There’s no comment yet from Hearst. But it comes at an embarrassing time for Hearst Television President David Barrett: Just two weeks ago he told a congressional committee that blackouts hurt consumers — although he says that broadcasters are not to blame for rising pay TV prices. The impasse could hit ABC especially hard: Hearst provides the network’s programming to Time Warner Cable in cities including Boston; Portland, Maine; Kansas City; Omaha; Pittsburgh; and Honolulu. Hearst also has affiliates for NBC (Cincinnati; Winston-Salem; Orlando; and Burlington, Vt.), CBS (Louisville), and CW (Kansas City and Orlando).

One thing is unusual, though: The cable company says that it’s mitigating the damage by importing signals from other markets. Louisville viewers can see CBS shows from Rochester, NY. Cincinnati viewers see NBC programs from Terre Haute. And those in Moultonborough, NH; Plattsburgh, NY; and Greensboro, NC see NBC from Wilkes Barre. Ordinarily cable operators are not allowed to import distant signals, but that doesn’t apply in markets where stations fail to submit a formal non-duplication notice. Also, the dispute doesn’t affect Hearst’s ABC affiliate in Milwaukee — it’s subject to a side agreement involving Charter Communications.

UPDATE, 3:38 PM: Hearst Television President David Barrett says that Time Warner Cable’s making “exaggerated and distorted claims” about their dispute. His company wants “a reasonable increase” in line with its programming costs “and the carriage fees now paid to us by Time Warner’s competitors.” It has more than 150 other deals, and that “is the real measure…of the fairness of our proposal.” The cable company “is seeking a significant discount of market-based fees that is neither fair nor reasonable.”

'Perception' Premieres to 5.6 Million Viewers After 'The Closer' Slips in Final Debut
By Michael O'Connell, The Hollywood Reporter's 'Live Feed' Blog - Jul. 10, 2012

As TNT prepares to finally end The Closer, nearly two years after announcing its planned departure, the Kyra Sedgwick drama continues to bring in big ratings for the network -- though not at the level they once were.

Monday's premiere of the final six episodes brought in 6.1 million viewers at 9 p.m., down from last summer's 7.2 million draw. That would make it the smallest premiere in the series' history, if this weren't technically a continuation of the 2011 run. With the demos, The Closer brought in 1.2 million adults 18-49 and 1.7 million adults 25-54.

Up until now, The Closer has been TNT's highest-rated program, peaking in 2007 with 9.2 million viewers. It will be replaced by spinoff Major Crimes, starring Mary McDonnell, when it takes its final bow in August.

At 10 p.m., TNT debuted Perception, starring Eric McCormack and Rachael Leigh Cook. The crime drama didn't quite pull in Closer numbers, bringing in 5.6 million viewers, but it did compete with recent drama premieres on the network.

Perception was behind only Dallas and its 6.9 million viewers among summer debuts. It tied Rizzoli & Isles' season opener and topped Falling Skies' 4.5 million and Franklin & Bash's 3.1 million viewers. Among adults 18-49 and 25-54, Perception had 1.1 million and 1.5 million viewers, respectively.

TNT recently handed out renewals for Dallas and Rizzoli & Isles. Additional orders for sophomore series Falling Skies and Franklin & Bash have not come through yet.

HBO's 'Newsroom' ratings rebound
By James Hibberd, EW.com's 'Inside TV' Blog - Jul. 10, 2012

So how is Aaron Sorkin’s new HBO drama holding up?

Not bad — and much better than last week. The Newsroom’s third episode rebounded to deliver 2.2 million viewers for its 9 p.m. telecast, a number that edges out the show’s series premiere a couple weeks back.

You’ll recall that the Sunday night cable news drama delivered 2.1 million for its series opener. The show then dropped to 1.7 million for its second episode (which was on July 1 — a three-day holiday weekend for many viewers). This week, The Newsroom rose to squeak out a bigger-than-ever audience. Still, it’s aways below its mammoth True Blood opening act, which topped cable Sunday night with 4.5 million viewers. At any rate, HBO already renewed The Newsroom for a second season. Also: Over on TNT, Falling Skies continues to perform strong with 3.6 million viewers.

Critic's Notes
Howard Stern's got 'Talent,' but America needs a better show
By Robert Bianco, USA Today - Jul. 10, 2012

America's seriously unbalanced.

It's not clear what NBC was expecting when it added Howard Stern to the panel on America's Got Talent (tonight, 8 ET/PT) — or what viewers were hoping or fearing the wildly popular but equally controversial shock jock might bring to the mix. But what they all got was a decent judge of talent who is, at least on his first two live shows last week, taking his job incredibly seriously and doing it quite well.

That's great. What's not so great for the show is that he's making his two co-stars, Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel, seem even more insignificant and inarticulate than they otherwise might. He's not just overshadowing them; he's making them virtually invisible.

It didn't help, of course, that the crowd at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, where the show is shot, seemed to be interested in Stern and Stern alone. After proclaiming at one point that "people want more of me," Stern stood up and the crowd began to cheer, leading Osbourne to whine, "All these people are here because they get tickets on Howard's show."

It's possible that's true. It's also possible that someone could have delivered that line and sounded witty rather than bitter and entitled, but that someone is not Osbourne.

If nothing else, the trio has established a routine that seems likely to carry them through the season. Mandel tries to say something and fails; Osbourne tries to say nothing and succeeds; and Stern steps in with the only thing worth saying.

None of that is Stern's fault, and he certainly deserves credit for putting some obvious effort into evaluating the acts and offering mostly constructive criticism. He does, however, need to find a way to deliver those evaluations in a more entertaining fashion, as Simon Cowell used to do on AmericanIdol. Outside of one thrown-away "so to speak" double-entendre, broadcast's content restrictions seem to have stymied Stern's sense of humor.

And, tough as this may be, Stern needs to find a way to interact with his co-stars that does not come across as harsh and dismissive or ridiculously phony.

The low point came when host Nick Cannon complained about Stern making fun of him on his radio show. Stern responded by saying how "welcoming" and "wonderful" Cannon, Mandel and Osbourne had been to him — a non sequitur that sounded suspiciously scripted, as if some NBC executive had noticed how cold and chemistry-free the panel seemed the night before and had sought corrective action.

The correction NBC needs is to bring the rest of the show up to Stern's level, a move that includes reminding the director that it's hard for viewers to vote for acts if they can't see them. As it is now, Stern is pretty much a one-man show.

Who knows — maybe that's all the talent this show needs.

Nielsen Notes (Broadcast)
Que bueno: Univision heats up
Spanish-language network ties Fox for No. 1 on broadcast
By Toni Fitzgerald, Media Life Magazine - Jul. 10, 2012

One of the sure signs of summer, in addition to rising temperatures and time at the beach, is when Univision surges to No. 1 on broadcast.

With the other networks airing a mix of repeats and mostly low-rated reality shows, the dominant Spanish-language network finished in a tie with Fox for first last week, the week ended July 8.

Both networks averaged a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating and 4 share, according to Nielsen, just ahead of No. 2 NBC at 1.2/4. ABC was fourth with a 1.1/4 and CBS fifth with a 0.9/3.

Certainly Univision gained an advantage on July 4, usually a very slow night for television. While ABC and Fox went entirely with repeats and CBS and NBC aired fireworks, Univision stuck with its regularly scheduled lineup of telenovelas.

And it paid off. The network had two of the three top-rated shows among 18-49s on broadcast Wednesday night, with 10 p.m. show "La Que No Podia Amar" drawing a 1.4 and 9 p.m. show "Abismo de Pasion" averaging a 1.3.

Excelling on a slow night was the story of the week for Univision. It also had the highest-rated program on broadcast Friday night with "Abismo."

That underlines one of the major strengths of Univision's schedule, its reliability. While the English-language networks are wildly inconsistent in the summer, because of their often-erratic schedules, Univision's schedule changes little from week to week, creating stability.

That's been even more true since it began airing telenovelas in the 10 p.m. timeslot this year instead of a rotating group of low-rated programs.

It shows how much Univision viewers value consistency from night to night. Though "Amar" airs at 10 p.m., often the lowest-rated hour of primetime on the English-language networks, it was the highest-rated show on Univision four of five weeknights last week.

* * * *

In broadcast ratings for the week ended July 8:

Among adults 18-49, Fox and Univision tied for first for the week, each with a 1.3 average rating and a 4 share, followed by NBC at 1.2/4, ABC at 1.1/4, CBS at 0.9/3, Telemundo at 0.5/1, ION and TeleFutura at 0.3/1, CW at 0.2/1 and Estrella and Azteca at 0.1/0.

Top five English-language Big Five shows (18-49s): 1. NBC's "America's Got Talent-Monday" 3.0; Tie-2. ABC's "The Bachelorette" and CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" 2.5; 4. Fox's "Hell's Kitchen-Monday" 2.4; Tie-5. NBC's "America's Got Talent-Tuesday" and Fox's "MasterChef-Monday" 2.3.

Top five English-language Big Five shows (total viewers): 1. NBC's "America's Got Talent-Monday" 10.40 million; 2. NBC's "America's Got Talent-Tuesday" 9.32 million; 3. CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" 9.05 million; 4. CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" 8.32 million; 5. CBS's "NCIS" 8.17 million.

Show on the rise: ABC's "Rookie Blue" Thursday 10 p.m. The drama improved week-to-week among 18-49s, rising 18 percent from a 1.1 rating to a 1.3.

Show on the decline: ABC's "Final Witness," Wednesday 10 p.m. Going up against fireworks–both outside and on NBC and CBS–the show fell 50 percent from the previous week among 18-49s, from a 1.0 to a 0.5.

Nielsen Notes (Cable)
Scorcher of a summer for TNT dramas
Network is up 12 percent in 18-49s with strong slate of originals
By Toni Fitzgerald, Media Life Magazine - Jul. 10, 2012

TNT's big push for original programming this summer is delivering good results.

The network is up across all demos compared to last year with a stable group of original dramas, and it got another boost on Monday with the launch of the final season of "The Closer" and premiere of new show "Perception."

TNT's primetime average is up 12 percent among adults 18-49 this summer (May 28 to the present), according to Nielsen, to 1.12 million.

It's up 11 percent in 25-54s, to 1.26 million, and 13 percent in total viewers, to 2.81 million.

It's seen its biggest growth among adults 18-34, where it's up 21 percent, to 460,000.

Last week the network finished ahead of rival USA, which usually dominates summer but still has several original shows yet to premiere, among total viewers, 18-49s and 25-54s.

The key to its success has been the stability of its shows. "Closer," the drama about a Southern belle who's also a razor-sharp cop, remains the No. 1 returning drama on cable.

It averaged 6.1 million total viewers in Monday's debut, and it lifted lead-out "Perception" to the year's second-best bow on cable, behind only TNT's "Dallas," with 5.6 million.

Though ratings for "Rizzoli & Isles" and "Falling Skies" are not as strong as they've been in the past, they are still two of the top three dramas on cable, along with TNT's "Dallas" reboot, which had the year's top debut with 6.9 million viewers.

It certainly helps that TNT now is offering new shows on most nights of the week, a strategy that has helped Bravo and USA to ratings gains over the past few years.

That saturation strategy has been a goal for TNT for years, and this year it has four nights of original programming of at least two hours each.

The network, which benefitted from advertising its original shows during the highly rated NBA playoffs, still has the premiere of "Leverage" to shore up its Sunday lineup next week.

* * * *

In cable ratings for the week ended July 8:

Shows making the top 10 among 18-34s, 18-49s and 25-54s: USA's "WWE Raw" (Monday, 9 and 10 p.m.).

Show on the rise: ESPN's "Wimbledon," Sunday, 9 a.m. The men's final averaged 3.93 million total viewers, up 48 percent from last year when the match aired on NBC.

Show on the decline: FX's "Anger Management" Thursday, 9:30 p.m. The new comedy slipped a lot among 18-34s last week, falling 44 percent from 1.24 million to 689,000.

ComicCon Preview
What To Watch For – July 11-13
By Dominic Patten, Deadline.com - Jul. 10, 2012

Wednesday, July 11

6 -9:45 PM — WBTV Sneak Preview Night

Wednesday night’s premiere screenings bring pilot episodes of five new shows for the 2012-13 season to Comic-Con. The evening starts with ABC’s elite Manhattan dark drama 666 Park Avenue, The CW’s Arrow and Fox’s The Following, produced by Kevin Williamson and starring Kevin Bacon. Eric Kripke, JJ Abrams and Jon “Mr. Comic-Con” Favreau’s post-apocalyptic Revolution, which will air on NBC, and CW’s midseason thriller Cult finish things off. There are also panels for The Following and Revolution on Saturday.

Thursday, July 12

10:30-11:30 AM – Battlestar: So Say We All

This 35th anniversary panel brings out some big guns to drill into the Galactica universe past, present and perhaps future. The appearance of Richard Hatch — who starred in the 1970s Battlestar as Capt. Apollo and the latest version — is a perfect Comic-Con kick-off from a franchise that holds a special place in many a fanboy’s heart. Room 6BCF

2:30-3:30 PM — Teen Wolf
The MTV series is relocating to California to shoot this year thanks to being one of the winners of the state’s tax-credit lotto. Executive producer Jeff Davis will be on hand for the panel along with series stars Tyler Posey, Dylan O’Brien, Crystal Reed, Tyler Hoechlin, Holland Roden and Colton Haynes for a Q&A and to preview a first look at the upcoming season. It will be followed by a world-premiere peek at The Inbetweeners, MTV’s new comedy series debuting August 20. Room 6A

4:40-5:45 PM — Elementary
CBS rolls out its upcoming modernization of Sherlock Holmes by screening the premiere episode. It won’t be the usual version of Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective. For one thing, Elementary takes place in modern New York, not England, with Sherlock — played by Jonny Lee Miller — an investigator just out of rehab. And, most shocking of all for many Baker Street Irregulars: Watson, played by Lucy Liu, is sobriety coach Joan, not war vet John. Miller, Liu and executive producers Robert Doherty and Carl Beverly will be on hand. Ballroom 20

6-7 PM — Dexter
Michael C. Hall will be there, as will his on-screen sister and off-screen ex-wife Jennifer Carpenter and the series’ Yvonne Strahovski, as well as executive producers John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton and Scott Buck. They’ll be showing a two-minute preview of the Season 8 premiere September 30. Showtime also will screen a new episode from the new season of the animated Dexter prequel web series Final Cuts. The premium network also will have Homeland executive producers Howard Gordon and Alexa Gansa on hand to show a trailer for the Season 2 premiere (also September 30) of President Obama’s favorite show. Claire Danes and Damien Lewis aren’t expected to attend. Ballroom 20

Friday, July 13

10-11 AM — Community

Chevy Chase won’t be there — he’s still on the show but can’t make it to San Diego. Dan Harmon won’t be there — NBC replaced the Community creator. But Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown and Alison Brie are in the convention center for the first time. After the off-screen fireworks and questions about the show’s future, their Q&A for Community’s fourth season won’t just be another Greendale study group. Ballroom 20

12:30-1:30 PM — Firefly 10th Anniversary
A decade ago, after ending Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Whedon set off on the Serenity. Now the ship’s crew and the cast of Firefly reunite with The Avengers director for a look back at the short-lived series. With Whedon, you always know something’s on the boil, so don’t think this panel will be just looking backward. Ballroom 20

12:05-1:05 PM — The Big Bang Theory
One of TV’s biggest shows takes over the big 6,500-seat hall this year. Executive producers and co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady will join stars Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch in Hall H. Jim “Sheldon Cooper” Parsons will join via satellite as the TV brainiacs preview the series’ sixth season. If past Comic-Con appearances are an indication, there might be singing and more too. Hall H

1:25-2:25 PM — The Walking Dead
If you are familiar with The Walking Dead the comic series you’ll know about the Governor. And if you know abut the Governor, you know Season 3 of the AMC series is going to take the show to a new, darker place. David Morrissey plays the Guv, and he’ll be there in the giant Hall H with series stars Andrew Lincoln and Sarah Wayne Callies as well as showrunner Glen Mazzara. Executive producers Robert Kirkman — who created the original comic — Gale Anne Hurd and Dave Alpert and more of the cast and crew will join them on the panel and for a Season 3 preview. Hall H

2:45-3:45 PM — Game Of Thrones
At the heart of Game Of Thrones stands author George RR Martin. The man who wrote the books on which the HBO series is based on will be co-moderating a panel with executive producer Carolyn Strauss. They aren’t scheduled to show any previews of Season 3, but with cast members Alfie Allen, Emilia Clarke, Michelle Fairley, Kit Harington, Lena Headey and Richard Madden up there too, the world of the Seven Kingdoms of Westros will not go unexplored. Hall H

6:45-7:45 PM — Breaking Bad
Breaking Bad is back July 15, but for Comic-Con, the AMC show’s Season 5 starts two days early. Bryan Cranston will be there with Aaron Paul as well showrunner Vince Gilligan and other members of the cast. Not only will they be discussing Bad’s final season, but they will show some of it too with an official sneak preview. The next day, Breaking Bad will be holding its Season 5 premiere party in San Diego with a full-length screening of the season opener. Ballroom 20

ComicCon Preview
What To Watch For – July 14-15
By Dominic Patten, Deadline.com - Jul. 10, 2012

If the first three days of Comic-Con look to be a whirlwind of previews and panels, the last two days don’t slow down at all. There’s more exclusive sneak peeks, blood-sucking star-crossed lovers, the new show from JJ Abrams and Jon Favreau, Showtime’s family of drunks, a double shot of Seth MacFarlane, a high school singing club, outlaw bikers, Bart Simpson, a Time Lord and Kevin Smith. Like the first few days, some stuff will likely change and unexpected stuff will emerge, but Deadline has the breaking small-screen news covered. Here’s what to look out for at the convention on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday, July 14

11-11:45 AM — Once Upon A Time

Reality and myth mix on the ABC series, so let’s see if they do at Comic-Con. Executive producers and co-creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are joined by the breakout drama’s cast members Ginnifer Goodwin, Emilie de Ravin Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parrilla, Meghan Ory and Josh Dallas to discuss their upcoming second season. Ballroom 20

12:45-1:30 PM — The Simpsons
Matt Groening will be there; executive producer Al Jean, the man who tried to unite animators to fight for their Emmy rights, will be there; supervising producer Mike Anderson too; and Yeardley Smith, the voice of Lisa Simpson. They will discuss the show’s 23 seasons, and the Season 24 “Treehouse Of Horror” episode. There’ll also be a discussion and 2D look at The Longest Daycare, the upcoming Simpsons theatrical short showing in front of Ice Age: Continental Drift once it opens July 13. That’s a lot to pack into 45 minutes. Ballroom 20

1:45-2:30 PM — Family Guy
Seth MacFarlane is completely in his element here: the fans love him and he loves them right back, always putting on a show and making waves. Fresh off the success of his feature directorial debut Ted, expect Seth to turn up the volume. Add Mila Kunis and Seth Green, plus Alex Bornstein, Mike Henry and showrunners Mark Hentemann and Steve Callaghan — as well as a preview of scenes from Family Guy’s upcoming season — and you’ve got an animation supergroup. Ballroom 20

4-5 PM — Shameless
At first glance, Showtime’s down, drunk and out Gallagher clan might not seem Comic-Con material. But this is a return visit, so they must be fitting in. William H. Macy, Emmy Rossum, Justin Chatwin and Jeremy Allen White will talk about the two seasons as well as show the series’ favorite fan moments. Which means, bottoms up. Indigo Ballroom, Hilton San Diego Bayfront.

4-5 PM — The Following
First will be a screening of the pilot episode of this new Fox midseason show. Then creator and executive producer Kevin Williamson and executive producer Marcos Siega and stars Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy will come out and talk about the upcoming crime thriller. Room 6BCF

4:30-5:15 PM — True Blood
The HBO vampire series has been a Comic-Con favorite since its first appearance in 2008. This year marks the fifth consecutive panel for the recently renewed show and the bloom hasn’t gone off. With Season 5 starting last month and a sixth season announced last week, creator Alan Ball is turning over the writing and showrunning of True Blood to promoted producer Mark Hudis. Hopefully Ball will talk about the shift and plans for the future during the panel. Ball will be joined by cast members Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer (who is coming from filming on the set of Devil’s Knot), Ryan Kwanten, Sam Trammell, Rutina Wesley, Nelsan Ellis, Deborah Ann Woll, Kristin Bauer van Straten, Chris Meloni and Joe Manganiello. Ballroom 20

5-6 PM — Glee
Creator Ryan Murphy won’t be there this year — neither will Jane Lynch. Still, McKinley High will still be well repped by series co-creator and executive producer Brad Falchuk and cast members Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Naya Rivera, Jenna Ushkowitz and Kevin McHale. They’ll be talking about the past season but tidbits of the next season could sneak out, even if it is in song. Indigo Ballroom, Hilton San Diego Bayfront

6-7 PM — Revolution
There’ll be a screening of the post-apocalyptic NBC pilot from Eric Kripke, JJ Abrams and Jon Favreau. A panel follows with Kripke and cast members Billy Burke, Giancarlo Esposito and Tracy Spiridakos. JJ and Jon aren’t expected to show, but you never know with Favreau and Comic-Con. Room 6BCF

7:15-9:15 PM –- Kevin Smith
It’s Comic-Con, so of course Kevin Smith is there once again, even more so now that he has Comic Book Men on AMC. The writer and director will, as in previous years, answer all questions for as long as he can. Hall H

Sunday, July 15

10-11 AM — Fringe

They’ve been to Comic-Con before, but Joshua Jackson, Anna Torv, other cast members and executive producer JH Wyman are back this year for one last time. They’ll be showing previews of Fringe’s final fifth season which is scheduled to debut September 28. They’ll also be talking about how the multi-universe show will reach its conclusions and if there is more Fringe to be had. Hall H

12:30-1:30 PM — Doctor Who
BBC America is bringing the Time Lord himself back again to Comic-Con, as well as co-stars Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and executive producers Steven Moffat and Caroline Skinner. Matt Smith and gang won’t need to use a sonic screwdriver to get out of this jam. As well as a panel, they’ll be showing new footage from the upcoming season. BBC America will also preview its new Supernatural Saturday slot with showings of specials The Science of Doctor Who, The Women of Doctor Who, The Timey-Wimey Stuff of Doctor Who, and The Destinations Of Doctor Who. Hall H

1:45–2:45 PM — The Cleveland Show
One of the nice things about being MacFarlane is you can pull together some of hip-hop’s biggest acts to join you for the Season 4 premiere of your show that isn’t Family Guy. There will be a screening of The Cleveland Show’s season opener Menace II Secret Society, which features Kanye West, the Black Eyed Peas will.i.am., Nicki Minaj, Bruno Mars, and The Roots’ QuestLove. A Q&A with MacFarlane, Mike Henry, Kevin Michael Richardson, Reagan Gomez, and Rich Appel will follow. Hall H

2:45–3:45 PM — Sons Of Anarchy
By Sunday, most of the Hollywood folk have gone home, but with the eminently quotable and pugilistic Kurt Sutter taking the stage, that’s their loss. Even more so if he’s previewing footage from the biker series’ upcoming fifth season. The showrunner will be joined by cast members Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Charlie Hunnam, Maggie Siff, Kim Coates, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Theo Rossi, Dayton Callie and Ryan Hurst to talk cold metal and the FX series’ next season. Melrose Place Came Out Twenty Years Ago, and We Still Love It
By Margaret Lyons, Vulture.com (New York Magazine) - Jul. 10, 2012

Melrose Place premiered twenty years ago this week. Let that sink in for a second, assuming things can still sink in through your wizened, ancient flesh. Twenty years. Was it really that long ago that naive, judgmental Allison and even-more-naive, dumb Billy first became roommates? These are the twenty things we'll always miss about the greatest apartment complex in TV history.

1. The way Allison used to say "Billy." ("Biuh-luee," dismissively. Always.)

2. The show's sensitive and informative portrayal of alcoholism and addiction. Ha, kidding. Remember when Allison used to chug giant tumblers of vodka?

3. Peter's suspenders.

4. Billy's tank tops.

5. Jo's photography.

6. When Sydney was a high-end prostitute.

7. When Traci Lords brainwashed Sydney into being in a cult.

8. Flannel. Flannel everywhere.

9. Rhonda's cardio-funk classes.

10. Michael's unbelievably comprehensive medical practice. Don't ever go to a specialist — just go to Dr. Michael Mancini.

11. How people kept letting Kimberly back into their lives, no matter how many times she tried to kill them.

12. Comas.

13. Jake and Jo's romantic, spiritual HIV test episode.

14. Taylor giving people pep talks.

15. Everything that was deemed a brilliant idea at D&D.

16. Jane's undead boyfriend's hand reaching up through the dirt of his grave, Carrie-style.

17. The endless parade of unhappy pregnancies.

18. Everyone's astoundingly bad taste in non-main-cast partners. That marine biologist is obviously bad news, Allison! Come on!

19. Megan, Lexi, and Coop. It's hard being the new characters.

20. Shooters.

Critic's Notes
Bianculli's Best Bets
By David Bianculli, TVWorthWatching.com - Jul. 11, 2012

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER
Encore, 8:00 p.m. ET

Okay, so I’m a sucker for Bond movies – even the “B” ones. (Just not the ones graded “C” and “D.”) This 1971 one, for example, returns Sean Connery to the franchise, after an embarrassingly ineffective one-film substitution by George Lazenby. Diamonds doesn’t sparkle, by any means, but it does show off Jill St. John to good effect as one of the Bond girls – and Lana Wood, Natalie’s sister, as another one.

THE STING
TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

Someday very soon, I’ll compile a list of the movies that ensnare me like a spider web whenever they’re televised, regardless of how many times I’ve seen them, and ask for yours. (But I want to get a whole column out of this, so hold your answers for the moment.) But suffice it to say that this 1973 movie is one of them. Robert Redford, who’s being honored tonight with a lineup of movies on TCM, is wonderful here. And Paul Newman, even though he’s in more of a supporting role, is even better. Then there’s Robert Shaw, as their mob-boss target. What a cast – and what a story.

DAMAGES
DirecTV Audience Network, 9:00 p.m. ET
SEASON PREMIERE:
It’s the last season for both this series and TNT’s The Closer, so enjoy these strong female leads while TV is giving them to you. And in the case of Damages, there’s not just one strong woman at the core, but two: Glenn Close as ruthless attorney Patty Hewes, and Rose Byrne as her protégé Ellen Parsons, who’s turned out to be just as tough, and just as hard to read. Tonight’s final-season opener introduces a typically complex new client: Ryan Phillippe as an Internet muckraker clearly modeled after Julian Assange. Villain or hero? It’s a question you could – and should – ask about Patty and Ellen as well.

THE FRANCHISE: A SEASON WITH THE MIAMI MARLINS
Showtime, 10:00 p.m. ET
SEASON PREMIERE:
Last year, The Franchise trained its cameras and microphones on the San Francisco Giants. This season, it’s the Miami Marlins, the team that’s both renamed and rebuilding – no Marlin was present at last night’s All-Star game. But Showtime promises even more behind-the-scenes access than with the Giants, starting with this expanded one-hour opener.

THE NATURAL
TCM, 10:15 p.m. ET

Another impressively effective Robert Redford performance and showcase, this 1984 movie is one of the two best baseball-as-fable movies ever made. (The other? Field of Dreams.) There’s a deep and wonderful cast here, but pay special attention to Glenn Close as a woman who catches the eye of Redford’s late-blooming baseball rookie. If you flip from tonight’s Damages to this, you may get whiplash while absorbing the difference, and the range.

TV Review
‘Hit & Miss’ stars Chloe Sevigny as a transsexual hit man with family problems
By David Hinckley, New York Daily News - Jul. 11, 2012

You've never seen Chloe Sevigny the way you’ll see her in “Hit & Miss,” a dark, intense six-week series launching Wednesday on DirecTV.

You’ve heard some TV shows described as “you’ll love it or you’ll hate it.” The description has never been more apt than for this Brit import.

Sevigny plays Mia, a hit man who is halfway through a transgendering procedure that will turn him into a hit woman.

In his male life, which Mia has left behind, he was married and had a son. Suddenly Mia learns the ex-wife is about to die, leaving a scarred, near-destitute family over which Mia will become guardian.

It’s a picture with nothing but trouble, and it doesn’t help that Mia has few parenting or people skills. She’s been living alone. Now she can’t. It’s hard on everyone.

Throw in an angry landlord named John (Vincent Regan) who has a dire entanglement with the family, plus Mia’s protective criminal boss Eddie (Peter Wight), and lethal disaster hangs over the story like the fog over London.

The actors, starting with Sevigny, repeatedly turn that specter into raw, compelling drama.

Think “Shameless” without the jokes and “The Crying Game” without the glamour.

A lot of viewers may say, “I can’t watch this.” It will reward those who do.

'HIT & MISS'
Network / Air Date: Wednesday at 10 p.m., DirecTV
Rating: ★★★★ (out of five)

You gotta' hand it to Chloe Sevigny - she's fearless. 'Hit & Miss' sounds like a big swing for the fences. She's going to have to really sell it for it to succeed. No pressure, right?
I watched the pilot, it's pretty gritty and intense. It's available on-demand. I didn't realize what it was about when I downloaded and I did a double/triple take when I saw Chloe in a revealing scene. eek.gif

I've seen 4 eps of this already and it's quite good with Sevigny giving an excellent performance. I do wonder though if it will be shown edited for the more puritanical American audiences.

I don't think DirecTV censors this kind of TV programming. Last season the Australian legal drama/comedy Rake had nudity and cursing and even Damages had a few "F" words.

Including this latest and last season of 'Damages' on DTV, how many seasons has it been there? It was one of my favorite series when it was on FX and I haven't seen it since it left. Frankly, I kind of forgot about it - out of sight, out of mind. redface.gif

I think FX ran Damages up to season 3.
DirecTV ran season 4 last year and the final fifth season starts tonight.

Correct. Season 4 was fantastic, much better storyline than season 3 (worst season IMO) Season 4 mirrored the real life blackwater security fiasco. Probably my favorite season, besting season 1.

Looked it up on Netflix and it looks like S1-3 are available in HD streaming and BD/DVD. S-4 is just DVD and no streaming at all. frown.gif

Well, those channels did go dark and I have an upset 8 and 3 year-old. Not that I'd want to leave DirecTV, but it's a shame they won't let me out of my remaining contract because something was dropped that I was promised I'd have.

While you're correct that Dogs was not on in January, you're wrong about the finale being tonight, The finale was a couple of weeks ago. I think the incorrect Jan 13th date was supposed to be June 13th.
