Extended Warranty Question

Thread Starter
I am grateful just to be able to have access to this forum because there are so many unknowns out there about this stuff. I am seriously thinking of buying a LCD HDTV for somewhere around 2000 to 2500 dollars. I don't have a lot of extra money to spend on it but I want to get the best TV that I can according to my needs.

What is the consensus on this board about the extended warranty on these TV's? I mean, in general I never get the extended warranty on anything, but I am considering it for this purchase. I wonder if people could post whether they have purchased the extended warranty and whether they think it is worth it for an LCD HDTV.

I did a search in this forum but I did not find any posts that addressed this question. I apologize if this question has been asked before and there is already posts on it. If so, if you can direct me to them I would be happy to look there.

Thanks,

Rob

It's personal preference, in my opinion. I did not and have purchased 2 TVs. One died within
a few weeks and the manufacturer replaced it. (they unmounted it, hauled it away, and then
installed the new one in two days)

Also consider that some issues that folks are having may or may not be covered
under a warranty, extended or not. Read the wording very carefully. I've read that
some of the extended warranties require the owner to handle shipping, there may
be deductibles, and prorating. Some offer extended warranties but overlap with
the existing warranty. Some credit card companies double a product warranty, which
may be a great way to go.

Finally, if you would be devastated after 1 year if the TV died and it would be
a financial disaster, maybe an extended warranty would give you some peace of mind.

Keep in mind, too, that with price drops each year, you are not buying $1000 worth of protection for a $1000 TV. By the time the mfgr's warranty is up, that same panel will be worth maybe 1/2 as much, even if they replace with brand new, which is unlikely.

Just take a look at prices a year ago for a standard 32" panel. Better yet, look at last year's prices for a 42", if you can even find them. Now look at this years.

I know not a lot of people are on board with Extended warranties or protection plans we at CC call them but i do believe in them and when i see customers come back with a return authroization for 3000 dollars for the console set they bought way back when to get thier new flat panel, i do feel good about them.
