Official Epson Powerlite Home Cinema 1080 Owners' Thread

Thought I'd start an official Epson 1080 owners' thread where we can post screenshots, tweaks, experiences.

I 'm convinced that there is not a theater in this vicinity that can compare with the 134" picture in our home theater. I saw "Fracture" the other night on a humungous Imax-type screen. It was not properly focused and the colors were washed out. I paid $28 for 2 tickets and snacks. Next time, I'll save the $28 and just buy the BD or HD-DVD once it is released.

Look at these new screenshots and tell me if you've ever seen a sub $3k projector throw a better image.

Not a single pixel can be seen. Razor sharp text:

Deep blacks. Notice the letterbox bars above and below. That is projected:

Accurate Colors:

Crisp, vibrant:

You be the judge:

More pictures can be found here and here.

How would you say the projector would look on a HP screen, I didn't see anywhere where you stated what type of screen you are using? I'm thinking of replacing my Z4 with this projector but I still may hold off a bit.

Don't know about a high power screen. I'm on a high contrast grey screen with a gain around 1.1-1.4. I'm assuming it would provide even more visual pop on an HP. I upgraded from the Z2 and each day I marvel at something new in the image this projector throws.

As a soon to be proud owner of the Epson myself...let me give a big shout out to you for starting up this thread here on AVS!

Just got my UPS tracking number a few minutes ago...and I'm hoping it will get to me by this weekend

This is probaly a really dumb question but does this projector come with a lense cap. I often go a week at a time and not even make it to my H/T room downstairs and it would be nice to keep some of the dust off the lense while not in use.

Thanks Kej2u,

Screenshots look good. I know you can't judge color and black levels too easily from screenshots, but sharpness, detail etc should hold true, and these are most fine!!

Be good to know what sort of settings you are using, any idiosyncracies in setting it up, etc. My Epson is still in the cupboard waiting for the mount to arrive. I'll be happy if I can get mine too look as good as yours.

Yes it does

Sound silly or come with a lens cap?
LOL!!

I didn't think the question was dumb. Given these prices, worth checking that the manufacturers aren't leaving stuff off. Mind you, the lens cap wouldn't cost more than 50c - still, it works...

Yes, it comes with a lens cap. It's kinda cheesy (it's semi-soft plastic and you just have to pop it on and off, unlike others I've seen which have some kind of mechanical fasteners.

Definitely a valid question. I know some of Panasonic's business projectors come without lens caps.

On a side note, for those of you that purchased PJ's and DIDN'T receive a lens cap I recommend using duct tape. If you attach the sticky side to the lens there will be no chance of dust accumulating on it.

I have yet to put the lens cap on as it snaps on and could compromise my perfectly centered lens shift, zoom and focus. But yes, it comes with one.

No major changes I've made since getting it. Running it at Theater Dark I with lamp set to low and color temp set to 6500k. I also went in and bumped up the contrast a little bit. No real adjustments otherwise. I've played around with the sharpness but the settings out of the box are very sharp already.

I'm running both the PS3 and the Toshiba XA2 through an HDMI switch (monoprice 2x1) into the Epson. I have digital audio outs on both devices running through a sony 7.1 receiver.

With this projector and the Tosh XA2, a well-mastered DVD looks REAL GOOD -- approaching HD. I watched Freedom Writers (Standard DVD) on it last night (134" diag screen) and there were several times that I felt it almost looked like HD.

I like how this projector has a faster cool down process than my old Z2.

For kicks, the other morning I reattached my Z2 after watching HD on the Epson all weekend. I could not get the Sanyo's colors even close to the out of the box color performance the Epson displayed. Z2 promptly went back into the hallway closet.

FYI - I have mine shelf mounted in a walk-in closet behind our theater room. It functions well as a projection booth. I'm starting to think about purchasing some sort of coolant system to keep that closet from building up too much heat as this Epson kicks off some serious temperature.

I'd be a bit worried about heat build up in the closet. A louvered panel at the bottom of the closet door and a ceiling fan might do the trick, otherwise the Epson will just start eating its own exhaust air.

Although you don't want to suck too much dust into the closet

You're not kidding. I don't know what I was thinking.

One thing that I want to mention that I found very odd was that when I first started the projector the scaling was set to 92%. I switched it to 100% and everything looks great. Anyone have any idea why they would ship it with a default set so strangely?
Senor_Curtains I just got my Epson 1080 yesterday but its still in the box. The first thing I want to do is switch scaling to 100%. How did you do this, what menu, command,etc..?

Don't know why they chose to ship it that way either. The manual said it is supposed to help you see things that ordinarily would bleed past normal viewing edges. Still, it produces dithering, so you need to go into the menu and select 100%. Easy fix.

Well to my suprise I joined the club also! I picked up a used Pearl but had it shipped to my work address. When I went home I noticed another box, it was an Epson Home Cinema 1080. My wife was tired of listening to me ask questions on what she thought I should do so she suprised me with the Epson.

I won't have time to set it up until tomorrow night, if I even get a chance to, then I am out of town for a week, but so far it looks like a very promosing projector and the free mount and 5 year warranty is a great deal.

Damn, you should have asked her questions about the JVC RS1.

Anyhow, now that you have both please take this opportunity for a shootout.
