Hi guys

I Am trying to get my HT set up and have a question. I have a Panasonic TH42PD60U and I am using a antenna to get the HD channels in my area, How can I get surround sound to my Onkyo TXSR674 AV receiver from my TV or the OTA broadcast ? Or cant I
I have searched for this and couldn't find anything so if you have a lnk form something I missed that would be great.

Thanks For your time

I did a quick search on google. You should be able to take the optical output of the Panasonic to the optical input of the Onkyo.

I don't have these units, but it should work. If it's not optical, look for a coaxial digital output (phono plug) on the TV. A digital output from the TV to the digital input of the receiver will carry the surround info.

This is an "enhanced" HD display (852 x 480 42" EDTV Plasma).

I am not familiar with that TV, but both of my HDTVs have digital audio outputs (fiber optic) by which the digital out is routed to the home theater receiver. (Sometimes you have to turn on the digital outputs/inputs in setup menus.)

On my main tv, I don't even have an analog audio connection wired to my receiver. On analog channels I have to use the TV's speakers. It's been setup for a year, I can't remember if I had a conflict or just didn't bother.

knick,

Both JohnS-MI and GeekGirl are right on.

The connection can be facilitated by means of a toslink optical cable:

Check the connection diagram on page 21 of the operating instruction:

Manual in PDF

Enjoy the surround sound!

Monoprice has quality as good as anybody at a better price; all my new and replacement cables are Monoprice.

However, 45-50' is a LONG run for Toslink, I don't know. I'd try to get the receiver, TV, and three front speakers closer together, with long runs to the rears.

Thats not a option. I looked at blue jeans and they list there tested to 50' but its more then double the price. I just wondered if quality may be better. Blue jeans will let you return it for any reason. I guess Ill take a chance and order from them.

Again thanks for all the help everyone I will let you know how it works out.

knick,

According to this:
Toslink range extender supplier,
Toslink has a maximum range of 15 meters. 3.28 ft/meter x 15 meters = 49.2 feet.

Fifty feet is on or beyond the fringe of the specification.

I have had pretty good luck with both monoprice and bluejeans cables. You may wish to contact monoprice and see how well they back up the product they sell and they return policy.

In case if it does not work you can alway use the range extender / repeater.

Good luck.

Well I received a Toslink cable and I cant seem to get it to plug in? Does it just push straight in? does it snap in? I pushed as hard as I dared and it wouldn't snap in, What am I missing? I have it in the hole the correct way, but it wont go all the way in
I must be trying to hard or something. Please post any Ideas

Thanks

Toslinks have little plastic covers on the ends when you take them out of the package. Take the off and then try inserting them.

I got the 50' Toslink from monoprice and so far so good. I have not set up my surround sound yet so if I run into a problem I will post it here. But as far as I can tell 50' seems to work for me.

Thanks

The reciever displays what the source content is when set on auto detect. Any mid grade reciever should do this.

Interestingly Shrek did come through in 5.1 DD last night when on NBC (looked bad ass by the way). It might be the programming of the show or just the CBS channel.
